A photograph of San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker doing a “quenelle” gesture was discovered earlier this week after soccer player Nicolas Anelka got into trouble for making the same gesture after scoring a goal in the Premier League.

The gesture was made popular by French comedian Dieudonne and is believed to be anti-Semitic.

Parker released a statement Monday to apologize.

“While this gesture has been part of French culture for many years, it was not until recently that I learned of the very negative concerns associated with it. When l was photographed making that gesture three years ago, I thought it was part of a comedy act and did not know that it could be in any way offensive or harmful. Since I have been made aware of the seriousness of this gesture, I will certainly never repeat the gesture and sincerely apologize for any misunderstanding or harm relating to my actions. Hopefully this incident will serve to educate others that we need to be more aware that things that may seem innocuous can actually have a history of hate and hurt.”

Dieudonne grew famous for his comedy routines in France, but in recent years his speech has grown more and more hateful, specifically in his rhetoric against Jewish people.

Leaders from the Jewish community have spoken out against the “quenelle” gesture, which many perceive to be a play on the Nazi salute, and urged Parker to apologize.

“As a leading sports figure on both sides of the Atlantic, Parker has a special moral obligation to disassociate himself from a gesture that the government of France has identified as anti-Semitic,” Rabbi Abraham Cooper, who is the associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights group, told the New York Daily News.

The Anti-Defamation League also issued a statement on Monday welcoming Parker’s apology. From Abraham H. Foxman, the Anti-Defamation League National Director:

Our hope is that Tony Parker’s experience and his heartfelt regret will alert others to the harm caused by this abhorrent salute which Dieudonne invented to express his deeply held anti-Jewish sentiments. We recognize that its use is not always anti-Semitic, however our concern is that French athletes and entertainers have now made the quenelle into a faddish element, which has the potential to be mimicked by other young fans and athletes around the world.

Just FYI, the meaning of the gesture itself is contentious, with friends of the comedian in question claiming it's an anti-establishment gesture and foes claiming it's anti-semitic and racist. As to who's right in this matter...

Non-issue. A three year old photo, followed by a clear and seemingly sincere apology. But then again, I'm not Jewish nor am I familiar with the work of the comedian.
I really wish whoever brought this up, would have saved it until we were playing SA in the Finals. Then I'd be happy to see this kind of distraction.

This was really weird, why would anyone bring up a 3 year old picture...

Reason it came up was that Nicholas Anelka, soccer player in the EPL, got reprimanded for doing the gesture after scoring this weekend.

My take, based on the Wikipedia of the "comedian," is that respectable people shouldn't be hanging around him period.

Dieudonne is more of a social commentator with a comic angle than a comedian. Far right in a nasty way.

And... 3 years ago or not, it's surprising that Parker was hanging out with him. Guess Tony gets the benefit of the doubt, but yeesh.

You think that Portland will be in the finals?
