    Default Travel Stats

Anyone know where I can find stats on travels? A college ball fan was telling me how they never call steps in the NBA, and I argued that they call it now more than they used to. I can't back that up, though. I looked on espn.com and basketball reference, to no avail.

    You could show them this...

actually that wouldn't help you argument.
"We've got to be very clear about this. We don't want our players hanging around with murderers," said Larry Bird, Pacers president.

That exact link is what sparked the discussion.

No way that is 7 steps. 3 steps, but not 7.

Yes I would be interested in seeing the stat also through the years. Have not found it yet

I count six. He traveled when he hopped on the left foot twice. Hard to see in real time though.

Right foot my bad. The last 3 are the ones that should of been noticed. They were so small though Wright didn't even notice.

You saw what happened right after though right? Somebody break out the Brian Shaw gif

Roy travels pretty much every time he catches the ball out on the wing. Mike Scott last night took 4 steps trying to perform that Euro-step last night.

I'm continually amazed at either how blind officials are, or how much the NBA just doesn't care.

What if someone from a school of business or management school were to ask, How did you do this? How did you get the Pacers turned around? Is there a general approach you've taken that can be summarized?

    Larry Bird: Yeah, patience.

I thought the Scott travel was obvious too, but no one on our side complained. It's a tough call for a ref. I think they're getting better at it though in certain situations. Still needs work on the 3 step layups.

I think it's a combination of the NBA doesn't care as much about traveling, and also a matter of priorities with the officials. AKA they're probably thinking about and looking for a dozen other things before they worry about steps. Well, apparently not all of the time, but when it gets ignored routinely that's what I imagine is going on. We can talk about ideals all we want, but I think it's practical to assume they're just focused on other rules at the moment, combined with the speed of the game in the NBA. But I don't know.

I don't think it takes much focus to notice someone shuffling their feet. I agree officiating is hard, especially at the NBA level, but if they're missing the easist, most blantant calls. It makes me pretty nervous. Gives me flashbacks to Joey Crawford staring and LeBron's foot as he stepped on the sideline earlier this year.

It provides ammo to thinking refs don't make the right calls against superstar players. If they allow someone like Wade to just walk all over the place, what else are they allowing him to do? I don't think for a second that the refs didn't see him moving. Is it paranoia? Maybe. But I've watched them turn a blind eye to things like this, and the laundry list of other things, to think there is some sort of fire.

That is kind of the problem though, they tend to see the slightly shuffling of feet, and completely miss players taking 4 steps. If you are going to ignore one it should be the slight shuffling that really has no affect on anything, not the taking 4 large steps as he drives to the basket.
