Lance will get about $10m per year I would guess now. If he gets that, you trade Copeland and you're under the luxury tax. Right now, including George's deal, we are set to have $65m on the books. The luxury tax for this year is $71.7m. Trading Copeland and waiving Sloan's non-guaranteed contract will get it.

We have so many good players. There are going to be some tough decisions this coming year. I fully expect Lance to remain a Pacer. You have to have talent to win championships and he's got it. So does PG24 and Hibbert. Those are the big 3...although it feels like we might have a big 7 or something like that.
Here's another way you keep Lance: Larry needs to tell Lance to just ham it up. Do his airhumps constantly. Make it so every team despises him. That will kill his value if GMs think it will destroy a locker room.
Say we do trade Hill, do we let Stephenson play the point? Not sure why we would trade Hill though, why not Copeland? To the Lakers? He fits in that system
Last time I felt this good about the Pacers future was 4th quarter of the brawl game right before it all imploded.
Granger won't be re-signed, obviously. So that helps. Scola's contract isn't guaranteed, so that's ~$4 million that can come off the books. Not ideal, but I'd rather say goodbye to Scola than Lance.
Lance isn't going anywhere. Hill being here doesn't make it harder to keep him. Though it would be nice if Simon would be willing to pay a smidgen of the luxury tax.
WE ARE NOT GETTING ERIC GORDON
We will keep Lance.
Bird is no idiot- he knows that you don't let a still improving 23 year old with tons of talent get away.

There is always that stretch option for Mahinmi that somebody suggested online.
The best route to take is to trade Copeland before February 20th 2014 while getting back nothing but Expiring contracts.
Hopefully dangling OJ and the Warriors 2nd round pick as sweetner could get such a deal done.

If Lance can be signed for under $10 million then the Pacers won't have to do a lot to clear enough space to sign him.
I worry about some over eager team with loads of cap space offering him $12-$13 million a year.
But you have to keep in mind where the team was in 2011 when the deal was made. We were coming off of that Bulls series in which we competed hard against them. However, our achilles heel in that series was our inability to score points down the stretch because of our relative youth and inexperience. Thus, our biggest need was not another rookie to add to an already super young team. Instead, we needed a proven play maker whose experience could help us in tight situations. Bird went out and got the team those players with Hill and West, and those two guys brought experience and professionalism which rubbed off on the entire team. Hill had only been in the NBA for three years when we made that trade, but it was three years with an A+ Spurs organization, which would be like playing 5 years somewhere else.
Leonard has obviously turned out to be a very good player, but it's not like we traded a pick that became Kobe Bryant or something. That trade made a ton of sense when you go back and look at what our weakness was in the Bulls series. We needed vets, not rookies. Hill has been a nice asset for this team over the last couple of years.

Dangle our 2016 1st rounder as a sweetener. If we keep Lance, that pick will be nothing again.
Also, there is probably no way Lance makes the All-Star Game. When coaches are picking backups, do you think they'll take Afflalo or the guy who is constantly dancing while destroying their team?
Hill could drop 50 points while curing cancer and people would still want to ship him out.
Larry may leave before he lets Lance leave this team.
Larry's probably striking a deal up with Herb right now....So Herb, if we make the finals, you let us go into the luxury tax...kapeesh?
