Nets' Brook Lopez out for season
    Updated: December 21, 2013, 11:30 AM ET

NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets' disappointing start to the season hit a low point with the loss of All-Star center Brook Lopez for the season to a broken foot, league sources confirmed Saturday.

Lopez broke his surgically-repaired right foot that he fractured in 2011 and later had a screw replaced in. League sources say Lopez fractured the fifth metatarsal of his right foot. The injury was earlier reported by Comcast SportsNet New England.

The 7-foot center was thought to have suffered the break sometime in the second half Friday night, possibly in the third quarter, during the Nets' overtime loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, a league source said.

Lopez gutted his way through the injury, playing 44 minutes while making 9-of-19 shots and finishing with 22 points and seven rebounds. The Nets discovered the bad news after the game when Lopez underwent X-rays on his troublesome foot.

The Nets (9-17) have been ravaged by injuries in this slow start to the season despite coming in with championship expectations. They've also lost point guard Deron Williams, swingman Paul Pierce, and key bench players Andrei Kirilenko and Jason Terry to injuries at various points this season.

The Lopez season-ending injury, though, would appear to be the biggest blow for the Nets. Lopez was averaging 20.7 points and six rebounds. Lopez gave rookie coach Jason Kidd an advantage over several other teams inside the paint with a young, high-scoring big man.

The Nets now will likely start Kevin Garnett at center and Andray Blatche will see an increase in minutes.

His foot problems are venturing into Bowie/Ming territory.

His career is definitely in jeopardy.

Time for them to blow it up? It wasn't time for that already? How would they even accomplish that with zero moveable assets?

Time for them to just let time flip the calendar ahead about 3 years and not make any stupid moves in between...

It's basically impossible to blow it up. No one wants the hideous contracts of Johnson and Williams. No one wants KG's washed up corpse. They've thrown away a ton of draft picks. The only player that anyone would want is Paul Pierce since he is an expiring contract with a little bit of game left. But no one is going to give you the farm for Truth. Outside of that, it's just a hideous mix of bad contracts.

They mortgaged everything for Pierce and KG, and gave Williams and Johnson a ton of money. That franchise is going to be in the gutter for a while.

Brooklyn I doubt has the patience for a "3 year plan"

despite the fact they have an owner willing to go above and beyond the cap number,, I am thankful to be a Pacers fan.

They have nothing left to move. No more picks. No more expiring deals other than Pierce. All 5 of their starters are unmovable. They're stuck.

The Nets stepped up to the plate in the offseason with full intention of swinging for the fence. They've had a rough at bat and finally struck out last night.

The hawks are having a charmed season. A strong team and a probable high lottery pick. Best of both worlds.

The two New York teams are pretty much the epitome of how to not run an NBA franchise.

Pierce is trade able, KG still has some value, Clippers?, sure they won't be able to move JJ or Lopez but I think they have some pieces.

KG has value? What KG are you referring to??? No nba team would take him for free if they had the option.

What are they going to get for Pierce? He makes $15 million this season.

I bet the Clippers take him in a heart beat, they probably want his leadership and all that stuff he brings, Rivers been there helps too.

edit: and for Pierce? I think you can get something after all the guy just had a 27 points game against Washington and 24 against Philly, he has some value.

Times like these remind me how fortunate the Pacers have been in regards to Hibbert's health.

No, the clippers are not going into the luxury tax to pay a fossil $12 million this year and next. He can barely last 20 minutes a game and he shoots under 40% from the floor for a guy that never goes inside.

Whatever value he had last summer is no longer there. Age has caught up to him.

The Nets have one asset: their owner's checkbook. They're already in tax hell. They should trade Pierce for a terrible contract that brings back lots of picks or prospects.

Keeping him doesn't actually change their cap number,
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

I know that it stung for Celtics fans to see Pierce leave, but my God that franchise is going to be in a golden position in the coming years. I think they have like 17 draft picks coming their way. Add that to hopefully a healthy Rondo and Stevens coaching, and wow they have a bright future.

There are some teams who would probably be interested in a one year rental of Pierce since he is an expiring with some game left, but no one is going to give you that much for him.

Trading picks for Pierce and Garnett has already burned the Nets. I doubt anyone makes that mistake again.
