Thumbs down The bench still isn't good enough

Obviously, Scola and Watson are significant upgrades over their predecessors, but those two can't do it alone. Ian can't stay on the floor for more than 3 minutes, OJ and Cope have forgotten how to shoot, and Solo is generally just invisible.

We really need a healthy Danny and possibly another bench upgrade if we want to go all the way.

    Agreed about Danny.

As high as I was about OJ at the start of the season, I am as low about him now. He's been awful and seems he can't do anything to help this team on both ends.

Lance's shot also has been way off for some time and he won't make any difference with the bench if it remains so. I see many teams are coming more prepared about his game and shutting down his running lanes.

The problem is that we had a golden opportunity in the 2012 off-season before re-signing Hill and Hibbert, but our interim front office completely dropped the ball. We won't have flexibility like that again for a looooooong time. I'm still amazed that we were able to get Scola, but it's going to be really hard to upgrade the bench again.

That hideous 2012 off-season still looms large.

Agreed. OJ is not pulling his weight this season. Solo is a rook. Cope doesn't fit. Mahinmi most nights is solid but he lacks some size.

We still need a shooter. obviously if DG33 returns healthy that's resolved. do not like what I have seen from OJ tho. disappointed.

    like to still have pendy.

The Spurs have an extremely good bench, though. They have outplayed their starters even in the playoffs in some occassions. Plus, the crowd was cheering them like crazy and it's obvious that they got a lot of momentum out of it.

Our bench is good. It's not the best in the league but it's quite good and it will become stronger when Danny comes back.

No bench will get it done against a shooting barrage like the one the Spurs bench put on at the end of the game. If that's the argument, I'm waiting for something better.

As has been stated, the problem with the bench is the offense. You are getting mostly incidental offense from Ian, and the wings are streaky at best. The main thrust of scoring with the second unit is the Lance/Scola pick and roll. No surprise that: 1. These players play better with the starters; and 2. Lance, without his near-miraculous 50% three point shooting, isn't super reliable as an offense threat leading a group. This is nothing new, nor is it especially demonstrated by tonight's game.

I wonder if our bench doesn't seem that good just because our starters are incredibly good. Just a thought.

and I don't put any weight in what took place in the last 5 minutes of the game tonight

Is this going to be this season's "This Team Has Quit" thread? Because if so, I'm extremely excited for our bench.

Our bench is fine, plus we will be getting Danny back, so nothing to be worried about

If we are talking about a full use of the bench, maybe it isn't good enough. But in the playoffs, we won't use the bench the same way e are using them right now. We will mix our bench players with our starters better than we are doing now.

If we were playing our 5 bench guys against somebody else's 5 bench guys, our guys would be just as good as anyone else's, especially once we get Danny back.

We have upgraded significantly with Scola and Watson. Throw in Granger and Mahinmi with the other two and they will be fine, even if they are used together. With Granger back, I think my fifth player with hat group would be Sloan, just to have a second ball handler on the court to better feed Watson, Scola and Granger.

The margin between a good bench and a bad bench is extremely small. If Orlando was shooting the way he did last season (.383 vs .276) we wouldn't be having this conversation. I honestly think the biggest problem is the inconsistent play from Lance with the bench. In the second (when our bench plays as a unit) our offense in the half court is often a Lance/dribble centric offense. When the bench plays well it is usually when it is a Scola/passing centric offense. Oh and stop passing the ball to Orlando in the corner if it isn't for an open 3, and in the off chance you do actually give him a passing option. Don't just stand there watching him as he is waiting for you to get open for a pass.

Never going to see all 5 of the Pacers bench during the playoffs. Only happened because the Pacers curb-stomped the Spurs, and let them have mercy points at the end.
"It's just unfortunate that we've been penalized so much this year and nothing has happened to the Pistons, the Palace or the city of Detroit," he said. "It's almost like it's always our fault. The league knows it. They should be ashamed of themselves to let the security be as lax as it is around here."

It has been the case since we signed David West. People just have short memories.

I would consider using a Watson, Sloan, Granger, Scola, Mahinmi 5 man unit though

OJ is in a slump he will come out of it. The bench had a terrible set of plays tonight buld held on for the win. I would like to see Cope get some time at the three and cant believe he could not get off the bench tonight.

Our bench is fine. OJ and Solo aren't pulling their weight. But Lance and George are young and can play big minutes in the playoffs. And if Granger comes back they won't sniff too much playing time anyway.

In the playoffs our bench will get shrunk anyway to Watson, Scola, Mahinmi and hopefully Granger. None of the other guys will sniff playing time when the games matter. And those 1st three can pull their weight just fine and Granger is of course if healthy a damn good player.

Everyone seems to be forgetting that couple games we had
earlier when GHill was out with a hip pointer(?) and CJ and
    DSloan came in and killed.

I know SA made a run but why was Coach Vogel playing 55 and Luis.... contest was in hand and we play OKC in a b2b.

Most teams don't have a 6th and 7th man at the level of Scola and Watson. Having two guys like that make the bench very good. The problem is that the backup wings are currently a disaster. I would seriously consider giving Butler some time in a blowout game like next Friday. Come back soon, Danny!

I'm not too worried. Things will work itself out. We don't need a stacked bench to win.
