Dampier won't be dealt by Warriors

    Erick Dampier isn't going anywhere.

Despite growing interest in their starting center, the Golden State Warriors have decided not to trade Dampier.

Both the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks sought Dampier to give them a low-post presence for their playoff runs, but the Warriors rebuffed offers for the eight-year NBA veteran, who's expected to opt out of his contract this summer and become a free agent.

Memphis president Jerry West coveted Dampier for months and had offered Stromile Swift, but Stein reported Wednesday that Golden State was holding out for swingman Shane Battier to be included in the package.

ESPN's David Aldridge reported late Wednesday that New York was deep in talks with Golden State for Dampier, with the Knicks also angling to annex Nick Van Exel in the same deal. Memphis was considered the leading destination for Dampier until news of the Knicks' interest surfaced.

Dampier, 29, is enjoying his best season, averaging a career-best 11.6 rebounds a game (fourth in the NBA) and 11.7 points a game. He also ranks sixth among the league leader's in field-goal percentage at .516.

Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

Well the P's new yesterday that RA was to have surgery today, so I imagine they took everything off the table immediately.

Portland's GM made a comment on the air a bit ago about making roster moves so he may try to buy out say DD? Or Q? *^$#% we already have 15 contracts, that won't work either. We may have to give some time to Primoz (that is something I've said all along).

Its not like we couldn't just release James Jones or Brewer if we wanted to make room for a player that clears waivers.

We'd have to buy out their gauranteed contract...and I think it would still count against cap numbers.

Not if they clear waivers - the old team is on the hook for the salary, the player is a FA, and we could sign them for the pro-rated vet's minimum or whatever is negotiated. Now if you wanted to claim them off waivers, then you're right - we'd have to absorb thier current contract. But since we've got the best/ second best record, everybody else would have a shot at the player before us so there's no reason for us to "claim" any player on the waiver wire.

No I was referring to any player we let go. We'd be on the hook for them, small amount true but we're in a stingie mode now.

Yeah, but 1/3 of the season for a guy with a minimum contract (Brewer or Jones) is only like $100k - $125k I think. I was already assuming that part of the deal was a no-brainer.
