    Default Where is Copeland?

Copeland was one of my favorite signings this offseason. Where is he? Is he getting the pine because of defense?

He's riding the pine because of Scola. When he was signed, we didn't have a great backup PF. Now we do. My guess is Copeland's minutes go up as the season goes on.

I'm guessing he gets used depending on situations. Now that we have Scola, that's going to cut down what Copeland's minutes would have been. Ian has been playing some pretty solid defense, so there's not much need to go small with our 4/5 combo. I was fairly surprised to see that he didn't get any minutes against Orlando because they aren't a particularly big team.

In the bench were he deserves to be.

We intended to sign Copeland to be our back-up PF. The team has made it clear that they see him as a PF when they said that he will spend 90% of his minutes at PF.

However, the opportunity to get Scola appeared and Bird jumped on it. Therefore, Scola became our back-up PF and Copeland was relegated to 3rd PF. It's obvious that neither Copeland nor Scola are going to spend minutes at Center and rightfully so.

In general, Copeland will play. When the team needs someone that can shoot the 3, he will play. When Scola has an off game, he will play. When the circumstances force us to play someone that can stretch the floor, he will play.

We signed Cope and then Scola became available. It is what it is.

Well, his defense is why he can't be the backup SF, yes.

But the coaches mainly see him as a PF in any case, so the problem is he's the third string PF here. I believe when they signed him the plan was for him to be the backup PF, but then they realized they could get Scola and decided to go for it, leaving Cope to be this year's Jeff Pendergraph.

I am hoping they can turn him over for a young cheap player, or an expiring before the trade deadline.

I think he will get some run as the season progresses--especially against small ball lineups. I likewise suspect we will have a few guys miss games in our frontcourt rotation so he will get his chance.

I dunno, I always thought Cope would be a good SF. I don't know why he doesn't get some run with the second unit at that position. CJ, OJ, Cope, Scola, Mahinmi. Just have him do nuthin but shoot 3s. He'd be the one guy on the team I'd be okay doing that with.

    I suspect it's defensive related.

I don't know, but Mahinmi's got his hands full defensively when we go with a bench combo up front.

I am positive that our defense is probably hard to learn for the bigs... It's somewhat unique in terms of philosophy... Ian has looked better and better on that end of the floor as time has gone on... And I expected him to look better defensively after playing in the system for a full year...

Scola and Cope are both new... But Scola has probably been slightly better on that end to date (or rather he's the less smelly turd)... And Scola's offense has been night and day better so far... Not surprised to see Cope ride the pine hard at the start of his time here...

At some point though we're gonna need him and hopefully he'll be ready...

I don't remember him being any worse than Scola.

Neither one of them are particularly good defenders, but Scola being the vastly superior offensive player will get the nod at PF, naturally. I was responding to your comment about him playing SF--I don't think his perimeter defense is up to snuff from what I've surmised from Vogel's comments and the commentary from Knicks insiders when we signed him.

I don't care if Copeland doesn't make a shot all regular season. At Chicago/Miami/Brooklyn ECF Game 7 down two with ten seconds left, I want Copeland standing in the corner pulling on the defense. That alone is worth $3 million. Vogel called him a weapon and that's how I see him too. Maybe that's an expensive weapon but I'd rather pay for it now than be caught without it later.

And who are you planning in sitting while this great weapon is opening the floor?

Either West or Hibbert. Keep one in for rebounding, put the ball in Paul's hands with Copeland and Hill/Granger on the other wing.

Probably have West out there for the pick and roll versatility he has.

Yeah I rather see anybody on the court with 10 seconds to go than Copeland, if anything Vogel not playing him tell us what we need to know, that the guy is just not that good.

10 seconds to go I want to see the starting unit on the floor and maybe DG for Roy that's it, all those guys can hit a big shot and we have seen that before.

I actually made a mistake earlier, I said down 2 and meant down 3. In that case I agree with you, I'd rather have the full starters out there if we just need a two.

Still, I love the shooting and options Copeland brings. You hate him, for god knows what reason, so I'm not gonna run around in circles with you for 3 pages on the subject. There's plenty of people on this board who will do that for you.

I don't hate him I just don't like his game, he is a horrible defender, he doesn't know what a bad shot is, he is as bad a Gerald Green and trust me I don't want to run around circles either.

Note that I also got to see him in NY and I didn't like him there either.

I don't really disagree with any of what you're saying. Still doesn't change the fact that I want another three point shooter for the playoffs and I don't care if it costs an extra three million.
