The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

  • Buckner Article on Danny / Paul

Great article. Already feels like we're getting better coverage, and she doesn't really even know the players yet.

    http://blogs.indystar.com/pacersinsi...other-tidbits/

“This is the last year of my deal. When you say ‘face of the franchise,’ Paul got the contract but I think we’ve got three faces, honestly. Roy, Paul and David – mainly Roy and Paul are really the faces,” Granger said. “Our team’s not built like we’ve got a superstar who’s going to score 25 points per game. That’s not going to be our team ever. Not with the talent that we have.”

“We’re five to seven strong, pass to the man for the open shot, play out of post,” Granger described. “Paul’s probably the most talented and will be here the longest … so yeah, from that aspect but as far the (other) aspect, multiple guys can take ownership of this team.”

When asked directly why he left himself out, Granger answered: ”We older. I’m 30. (David’s) 33, ya know what I’m saying?”

Granger explained more: “I’ve been it for a long time but I’m older now. I’m in the last year of my deal. We don’t know what’s going to happen next year so we’re going to go forth this year.”
Partially, I think she gets good access because she asks good questions.

Granger, Sr. also mulled the question “when was Danny not ever The Man?”

“From Bradley, to New Mexico, to professional, he’s always been The Man. I can’t remember the time he wasn’t.”

So, how does he think the change would impact his son?

“This is what Danny wants right now. Danny wants a championship. For me to sit here and say that it probably won’t affect him that he’s not The Man, that probably won’t be the truth,” Granger, Sr. said. “But I do know this, he’s intelligent enough to understand the process.”

“He saw it with Jermaine (O’Neal). Jermaine was The Man and he fell off. He understands the process of what’s happening with the professional game.”
The whole article is worth reading. Check it out.

Here is the blog that follows the article with more info

    http://blogs.indystar.com/pacersinsider/2013/10/27/why-danny-granger-rented-his-mansion-to-paul-george-and-other-tidbits/

Why Danny Granger rented his mansion to Paul George and other tidbits

In today’s story about Danny Granger, the idea was to show where he is at mentally now as he recovers from a left-knee injury and returns to a team that has changed so much while he was away. Of course, not everything could make it into the final draft so this blog will be a bit like the “director’s cut” and share some more quotes and insights that will hopefully shed more light on Granger.

The relationship between Granger and George

First, let’s reference the two men in the above picture. Paul and Danny. From all accounts, everyone interviewed for this story expressed that there still is a “Paul and Danny.” Two guys who remain friends in spite of the younger one’s ascension.

Some folks who read the story came away with that Granger believes he’s the savior to this team. That couldn’t be further from the truth. When talking about the face of the franchise, Granger never mentioned his own name. Instead, Granger referenced the young core.

As far as their relationship, Granger and George remain tight. So much so that while Granger remained in Indianapolis over this past summer to rehab his knee, he and his wife took on a tenant for their Los Angeles home - Paul George.

George called it summer “at the Grangers,” and crashed at the mansion while he was working out in L.A.

“Since literally he met Paul, he’s been like a little brother to Danny,” wife Dionna Granger said.

    Taking a step back

Danny Granger, Sr. also addressed the Paul and Danny dynamic while being interviewed for this story. Senior is as interesting as they come. When he’s not in Indianapolis, he’s easy to spot – he’ll be the 6-foot-4 guy in an oversized Harley Davidson leather jacket, motoring his Screamin’ Eagle around the canyons in Southern California. Granger, Sr. loves slow R&B jams for his ringtones but he’s still rugged enough to have allegedly fought off a kidnapping attempt in Turkey while in the country with his son who was playing with Team USA.

Most of all, Granger, Sr. is a straight shooter and expressed his perspective about his son and the rising star.

“I think that controversy between can PG and Danny get along is really blown out of proportion big time,” Granger, Sr. said. “Danny has accomplished a lot of stuff in his career but he’s at the point now where he wants to play with good players. He wants to play with guys where he doesn’t have to carry the whole load. That could be part of the reason why he’s hurt now because he had to go out there and play 30, 35, 40 minutes a night, shoot every time.”

“The fact that PG stepped up is great. That’s great for Danny.”

Granger, Sr. also mulled the question “when was Danny not ever The Man?

Granger, Sr. also shared his beliefs on his son’s future role with the team.

“The way them boys played last year, if we get Danny at 80 percent and he’s coming off that bench – no big deal, he could come off the bench, that’s fine. Come off the bench and contribute and do what I know what he could do and what they did last year, we got us a championship,” Senior said. “He understands what the situation is but he told me the other night, I’m not finished (at this point, Granger, Sr. broke out into one of his big smiles) He said, ‘I promise you, Daddy! I’m not finished.’ So he’s ready to play some ball. And he’s going to do whatever he needs to do to help his team win. Danny has it in his head right now that we could win a championship this year.”

The team waits but sees encouraging signs

Last year, while they were both effectively out of the game, Larry Bird said that he did not have much contact with Granger. He visited one practice and attended one game – by his count – but Bird said he watched every game and took down notes for the possibility of his return to the organization. Of course, Bird is now back as president of basketball of operations. He’s built a steady roster with free-agent signings, but he continues to wait on the biggest addition… one Danny Granger. Even so, Bird understands the need for patience.

“The only thing I told Danny is… if you get back to playing the way we know you’re capable of playing, I think the starting spot’s open there,” Bird said. “That takes nothing away from Lance (Stephenson) because I think Lance is a starter in this league and last year he proved it that he can handle the position. The one good thing for our team is we can always put Paul George at three or two. But obviously we have to see how Danny comes back.”

“Again, they were planning one day on and one day off. He’s been very cautious to see how his knee would react. It’s been a slow process and plus he’s been out a year. I sat out a year, I know how tough it is to come back after being out. My situation, I was healed up and I could get in top shape coming in so it was a lot easier situation for me whereas Danny, he’s been in training camp in and out and it’s been tough for him to get into a rhythm. As I say that, we were expecting that he would have some setbacks, not necessarily with his knee but other things happened because he hasn’t really played at the speed that these guys play at and it happened. It’s a minor setback and we’ll just go from here and see how he plays and how he gets back in and hopefully he can stay pretty healthy. It’s up to coach to see who he wants to play.”

Bird recalled a practice just over a month ago when he noticed that Granger took an encouraging step forward in the process. While observing practices, Bird does not count the shots Granger makes. Rather, he fixates on Granger’s activity.

“He looks better, especially the more he’s out there. He continues to look better and better. Now, he might hit his shots every day but I worry about how he moves,” Bird said. “That’s all I watch. I don’t care about the shots. I care about how he defends, and how he’s moving his feet and if he has confidence in jumping and running like he had before. It’s a slow process.”

Re: Buckner Article on Danny / Paul

Here is Kravitz latest on the pacers.

      http://www.indystar.com/article/2013...IndyStar.com|p

Bob Kravitz: Only two questions matter with the Indiana Pacers

This was going to be a Five Questions About The Pacers column, but upon further review and deliberation, there are really only two that matter with the season on the doorstep:

      1) What’s the deal going to be with Danny Granger: healthy or unhealthy, starter or reserve, trade bait or not?

      2) Is this bench, which looks better on paper but has been in and out in the preseason, going to be the vast improvement we all expect over last year’s unholy mess?

      First, Granger.

Coach Frank Vogel said Thursday that Granger is unlikely to play in Tuesday’s season opener at home against the Orlando Magic, and after that, he’s day to day with a calf strain that’s worse than anybody expected.

But then Vogel said something really interesting, and telling.

“It’s a work in progress,” he said. “But, look, if Danny was healthy and playing great and Lance (Stephenson) was healthy and playing great, I’d probably see stretches throughout the season where Lance was starting and I’d probably see stretches throughout the season where Danny was starting, just to see how the different combinations throughout the game pair up.”

      Hmmm.

My feeling is this team will be at its very best with Granger starting and Stephenson leading the offense off the bench, and a pre-season conversation with Larry Bird suggested the team president viewed it exactly the same way.

But Vogel, who wants to be able to count on Granger’s health and who doesn’t?), isn’t ready to make any grand proclamations.

Granger said Thursday his calf strain is not related to the knee problems that forced him to miss all but five games last year, and feels extraordinarily healthy after pushing himself through training camp.

“I’m doing really well,’’ Granger said. “It was to the point where I was telling (trainers) to let me do more. We were doing three days on, one day off, but I could have done more.
They were holding me back and sticking with the plan, but not because I wanted to.’’

The question still remains: Can they count upon him to be in the lineup night after night? Vogel wants answers, and he hasn’t come up with any just yet.

All of this has important, long-term implications.

Granger is in the final year of his contract, so Bird will have to make a huge decision as the trade deadline approaches:

Does he trade Granger, knowing he’s not likely to be able to re-sign him after giving big bucks to so many others on the team, or does he ride it out and lose him for no compensation?

Bird was pretty forthright, as he always is, when asked the question a couple of weeks ago. If Granger can’t stay healthy, or if he isn’t producing the way the Pacers hope, he’ll likely get dealt and the Pacers will get what they can for the former All-Star. If Granger is playing well, and the Pacers look like a team that has a chance to reach the NBA Finals, Bird will roll the dice, keep Granger in Indianapolis and worry about free agency later.
      Which makes perfect sense.

      Second, the bench.

On paper, the additions of C.J. Watson, Chris Copeland and Luis Scola look like a major upgrade on the group that was close to the bottom in every conceivable production category last season.

Of course, we looked at last year’s bench on paper and thought, “D.J. Augustin, Gerald Green, Ian Mahinmi … this is going to be a much improved bench.’’

And they were an abject bust.

“Honestly, your bench is what really makes or breaks a team,’’ Granger said. “You could have a great starting group, you can have one or two guys that are great, but it depends on what happens when those guys go off the court. A lot of teams that have been successful over the past few years have had a really strong bench.”

It’s a little difficult to read much from preseason; Vogel, who is blessed with more talent than he’s ever had, has mixed and matched players, looking for combinations that work. Truth is, he’s used combinations he’ll likely never use during the regular season. Once the real games start, he’ll be much more consistent about his rotations and players will be more comfortable regarding their minutes and their teammates on the floor.

      The early returns are mixed.

Scola has been terrific the past two, three games.

      Watson has been consistent.

Copeland hasn’t found his shooting stroke, especially from behind the 3-point arc.
Solomon Hill has shown promise but remains a rookie in a men’s league.

Mahinmi has been up and down.

A healthy Granger and an improved bench could be enough to finally knock off Miami and, yes, Chicago, too. If these questions linger, though, if Granger can’t get right and the bench struggles, this will be a disappointing season.

      The answers start coming Tuesday.

I want to know more about this. Anyone got any more inside knowledge of what happened? Don't mess with Danny Granger Sr.

Its a little known that fact that Liam Neesons' character in the movie "Taken" was VERY loosely based on Danny Sr.

I want to comment about this one section of Kravitz column

Green or Copeland? this one is tough, because last year I had never heard of Cope. So I probably would have taken Green.

            Scola or Tyler? Scola.

And Ian is here again, so no choice there.

Re: Buckner Article on Danny / Paul

I enjoy Danny Sr. He has always looked to me to be a friendly guy who is open to chatting with just about anyone at the games, and once I was fortunate enough to be one of them when he stopped to talk with a handful of PD people to talk about Danny at the end of his all-star season.

Let's see, last year we went from Collison, Barbosa, Jones, Tyler, and Lou to Augustine, Green, Young, Tyler, and Ian. At the time, I think I was expecting DJ to be as good if not better than DC, I had no idea what to expect from Green, and I probably would have considered Jones/Young a wash, with perhaps a slight nod to Jones though that's probably my 2013 mind speaking not my 2012 mind. I thought Ian would be better than Lou.

Now, I'd rather have DC than DJ, if Barbosa can still play like he did in '12 I'd still prefer him to Green, I think Jones might be a tad better than Young, and I still think Ian is better tran Lou.

Time will tell for sure, but I feel very optimistic about Scola being better than Tyler. Less sure about CJ Watson because we've been burned by incoming point guards so many times, but at least we know he has proven himself as a good backup on a contender (Chicago) before, so he probably will be better (hell, with how bad DJ was, it wouldn't take much).

I think we'll be better even without Granger mainly for these reasons: Watson, Scola, and a better Paul George. It may not translate, but if it does, what I've seen flashes of from Paul in preseason is very encouraging; I've never seen him drive or finish the way I saw him do multiple times against Chicago, CLE, and @DAL. And he seems as confident as ever at knocking down mid range jumpers off the dribble, and his 3 ball. Maybe it's not going to show up when the games count, but considering he's already proven himself capable of ECF-level clutch behavior... I have to assume it probably will. If so... look out.

Danny being healthy is just even better.

I feel like I should also say that assuming Orlando will play more this year than last year (whenever Danny can't go) and is basically taking over Green or Young's role in the rotation, I do also like him better than those two guys, so that's another improvement.

This team still has its fair share of flaws, but I do believe that even if Danny disappeared in a UFO never to be seen again tonight, we're still a better team than last year. The only way that's not true, IMO, aside from of course bad luck with injuries, is if we can't maintain our place as a top rebounding team. I'd like to think our problems there in preseason were more to do with dead legs, low interest, and things needing to be correcting as far as schemes/assignment go, but maybe not. If I'm right, then I think it will look close to as good as it did last year. I mean our five best players are still here playing the most minutes; it can't be THAT much worse, right? Unless we're assuming Watson, Jones, and Scola collectively are just terribly worse at rebounding than DJ, Green/Young, and Tyler were. I'm not sure about that.
