Default Best Offseason Acquisition: Candace Buckner

Season hasn't started yet, but I'm seriously impressed. Her latest article probably deserves its own thread.

Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

Yes, she is much better than Mike Wells.

I think her girls's touch, a little bit talky, help reads to know the insight of players, which is a good refresh in contrast to Wells's terse style,.

    I like this part:

    Quote Danny Granger:
I’m not finished (at this point, Granger, Sr. broke out into one of his big smiles) He said, ‘I promise you, Daddy! I’m not finished.’
    ------------

Guess Danny has some inner fire which he didn't show off easily.

Having studied English at uni, I'm quite pleased with the new addition. She's not perfect, but I prefer her narrative style over Wells' typo- and grammatical error-laden, "tweet" style.

Agreed. She's a better writer and I actually learn new things about our team and players.

It's nice to see some actual effort from a Pacers IndyStar beat writer. I think this style of writing/reporting is her strong suit. I love it!

Great article. Thanks for sharing. I had no idea she was the new writer for the Pacers. Thought it was Pointer?

Apparently not. And apparently she gets asked that all the time.

LOL......the profile for Candace Buckner has to say that she's not related to Quinn Buckner.

I can tell you that this was the very first thing I thought of and glad that IndyStar had to immediately clarify that.

I thought Wells could be a good reporter, but his "I seen it" grammar was indeed a bit embarrassing.

Her grammar, on the other hand, is very baronial.

I was never a fan of Wells writing style/ability. A good writer is someone who can describe paint drying and make it enjoyable to read. Wells writing about my favorite topic and I struggled to get through his articles.

    Candace seems better to me.

I will say that Wells was a good reporter though, and we'll see if Candace can measure up in that area

Just in the couple of preseason games where I've followed her tweets I have been very impressed - information about what is going on on the bench and in the locker room instead of incessant banter about hot dogs and the questions people are asking.

It's nice seeing Pacer articles longer than a paragraph. Wells seemed to mail it in outside of game recaps. She is much much better than Wells, doesn't have the spelling errors that Wells had every article.

I will miss updates on hot wings.

What do you mean... "Support the team?" That is an angle I wouldn't expect from an outside media source responsible for day to day coverage like the newspaper.

If I were saying that, I wouldn't mean to be a homer but I would want the beat reporter to be generally positive rather than searching for the sensational negative headline stuff just to feed the need for a lead.

I get the feeling she will be exactly what I've looked for - someone who actually tries to get answers to the "why" questions that cause people like us to go speeding down the assumptions rabbit hole, as opposed to taking a spin (negative or positive) and running with her own speculation.

    Bobby Mac,

With all due respect, it is not the beat writer's job to "support the team". In fact, a writer that takes that approach is not doing his/her job properly. Objectivity is an essential component in good day to day coverage of a beat.

And, for what it's worth, I consider Mike Wells to be the best Pacer beat writer that the Star has had in my years here.

I think he was just temporary. Didn't seem to know the team all that well.

Pointer was asked to fill in while they found Wells' permanent replacement.

I liked Mike well enough, but he certainly didn't seem that motivated to produce much quality content. His reporting was ok, but like others have said, he didn't really engage in anything outside of game recaps.

Reading his stuff on the Colts on ESPN.com is pretty rough at times. Jerky sentences etc...his style is much more suited to a "rapid reaction" or Twitter.

Buckner has done a nice job thus far. Of course, it is a bit easier to write about a top 5 NBA team coming off an ECF appearance, whereas Wells wrote primarily during the down years.
