Default Official Out for the Season Thread 2013-2014

I'm trying something new this year. Every season there are a large number of players that suffer a season ending injury. I'd like to use this thread as a sort of injury tracker. When news comes out that a certain player is out for the year, let's list the player and any article regarding the injury here.

Unfortunately, our first victim is none other than a popular player on this forum:

Carl Landry - Torn Hip Flexor

Kings' Landry to have surgery for torn hip flexor

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Sacramento Kings power forward Carl Landry will have hip surgery Tuesday and probably miss much of the season.

Landry tore a left hip flexor muscle during a recent practice and is expected to miss three to four months. The team said Monday that Dr. William Meyers of Philadelphia will operate.

Landry signed a $26 million, four-year contract in July. He averaged 10.8 points and six rebounds in 23.2 minutes off the bench to help the Golden State Warriors reach the second round of the playoffs last season.

He opted out of the final year of his two-year, $8 million deal with Golden State last month to become a free agent.

Landry isn't necessarily the head of the Players Union but this injury does take away a slight veteran presence from a team that is already dismally lacking on that front. No breaks for Kings fans.

Greg Oden held out of practice.

Not officially OUT yet. But after so many years of recovery, he still has knee issues:

    http://espn.go.com/nba/truehoop/miam...-swelling-knee

He has yet to practice with contact (i.e. he ain't scrimmaging seriously). Has yet to appear in preseason.

This is one player that I have a feeling might eventually earn a permanent spot on this list. Hopefully he can play at some point this season and play well but I think the odds are against him.

Festus Ezeli, C, Golden State Warriors - Out at least at least until December but possibly until March

    Ezeli undergoes knee surgery
    by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
Warriors center Festus Ezeli had surgery in early June to "reinforce the MCL and PCL" in his right knee, likely sidelining him well into the 2013-14 season. The team announced the procedure, which was needed to repair damage he suffered in April. The minimum recovery time is expected to be six to nine months, likely putting him out until the mid-way point of the season.

I'm going to go ahead and sticky this as people might want to reference it through the season. If it turns into anything other than a list of people out FOR THE SEASON OR AT LEAST AN EXTENDED PERIOD then it will be tossed.

Nerlens Noel - Out for the season - Knee
    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/98...ted-for-season

The Philadelphia 76ers are now expecting to hold first-round draft pick Nerlens Noel out for the entire upcoming season as he recovers from knee surgery, coach Brett Brown said Monday.

"I doubt, everybody doubts that he's going to play this year," Brown said before the Sixers played the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday. "We don't want to waste this year. I think from a skill perspective, it's an opportunity for us to break down his shot, really work on his free throws and start a little bit from ground zero."

It was not originally the Sixers' plan to sit Noel -- the No. 6 overall pick, who had surgery to repair the ACL in his left knee in March -- for the entire season. He suffered the injury Feb. 12 while playing for the Kentucky Wildcats.

The timetable for Noel's recovery was initially set for six to eight months, which was expected to allow him to return sometime in the middle of his rookie season.

Dr. James Andrews, who performed the surgery, told ESPN in June that Noel was ahead of schedule.

"We're really happy with his progress," Andrews said at the time. "He's several weeks ahead of schedule on his rehab. He's improving on a weekly basis. He has a completely stable knee."

The Sixers slashed their payroll to the lowest in the league and left several holes on the roster with moves over the summer. The team is retooling for the future, and the conservative decision regarding Noel appears to follow that path.

Philadelphia acquired Noel and a protected 2014 first-round draft pick from the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday. It was believed Noel slid on some draft boards because of concern over his knee.

You can probably add D. Rose. Out indefinitely needing knee surgery.

"There are two options as to the direction Rose and his doctors will decide to fix the knee. They could either remove the meniscus, or a portion of it, and Rose could be back on the floor in a matter of weeks. What seems more likely, according to a source will knowledge of the situation, is that Rose and the Bulls will decide to have the meniscus re-attached, which would put him out for upwards of four to six months."

    That would be his season.

Derrick Rose - Out for the season - Knee

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports...,5647662.story

    By K.C. Johnson, Tribune reporter

    7:29 a.m. CST, November 25, 2013

LOS ANGELES -- Tom Thibodeau has confirmed Derrick Rose will undergo surgery to repair the torn medial meniscus in his right knee on Monday in Chicago, which most likely will sideline Rose for the remainder of the season.

He had established that team physician Brian Cole, who also repaired Rose's torn left anterior cruciate ligament, will perform this surgery.

And he had answered question after question about the future for the Bulls and Rose. Then he got fired up.

“We're the Chicago Bulls,” Thibodeau said. “We have one goal and that's to win. I believe we have the personnel in that locker room to get it done. We know we don't have to change our style of play. We're built on defense and rebounding.”

Rose will need similar resolve and determination to overcome his second lengthy rehabilitation process in 19 months.

Thibodeau said how long Rose is out won't be determined until Cole performs the surgery. But two sources close to the process indicated Rose and other decision-makers want his meniscus reattached.

While this is better for Rose's long-term career, it also means a lengthier rehabilitation process of up to six months or more.

That would mean Rose would miss the rest of the regular season.

“We're hoping for the best,” Thibodeau said. “We, of course, feel very badly for Derrick. I talked to him at length (Saturday) night. He's in good spirits, about as well as can be expected under the circumstances. And he's already thinking about his rehab. Typical Derrick, he's concerned about his team, his teammates. He's such a great teammate along with being a great player. That being said, we can't feel sorry for ourselves.”

If Rose is done just 11 games into his comeback from left knee surgery, he will have played in just 50 games over three seasons.

“I'm not concerned about that,” Thibodeau said. “I think his mental toughness is going to serve him well. Whenever he has faced any adversity, his mental toughness has gotten him through. I could tell talking to him (Saturday) night there was a resolve and determination. We expect him to make a full recovery. It's another bump in the road. He'll get past it.”

Whenever he does, Thibodeau doesn't believe two major knee surgeries in 19 months will affect Rose's explosiveness, speed and desire to drive aggressively to the basket.

“You can't change who you are,” he said. “He's confident. He got through the first rehab. His ACL knee is terrific. So now he has to rehab the other one. He'll handle that.”

Clippers coach Doc Rivers called the injury “awful” and opined that Rose's presence is good for the league. Having suffered a torn ACL late in his career, he shuddered at the thought of repeating a rehab process.

“The rehab is brutal,” Rivers said. “But more importantly, you're sitting there and not a part of it. It's really — just mentally — very difficult. I can't imagine it in back-to-back years. That's really very difficult.”

Rivers coached the Celtics last season when Rajon Rondo tore his ACL, and Boston promptly won seven straight. But then he warned of the emotional cliff a team can fall from, which appeared to happen to the Bulls immediately with a 39-point blowout loss to the Clippers on Sunday.

    Thibodeau downplayed that angle.

“This is the third year we're dealing with (Rose out),” he said. “The core is basically the same when you look at Lu (Deng) and Carlos (Boozer) and Joakim (Noah). Kirk (Hinrich) has been through it in the past as well — and of course Jimmy (Butler). So we have a good base to operate from. The new guys have to get in and get the job done.

“At the end of last season, we had the belief we could beat anybody. Then we got hit again (with injuries) during the playoffs last year. We have to get that determination back. The important thing is not what other people are telling us. It's what we think. We have a belief that we can succeed. And that's what we're going to do.”

In fact, Luol Deng said he believes the tough part may be initially getting over the emotional hurdle of losing Rose. Typically, Thibodeau-coached teams have closed seasons in strong fashion.

“We've got guys who are going to man up and play tough and play hard,” Deng said. “When Derrick got hurt last time, we lost that (76ers) playoff series. It took us awhile to get going.

“We just have to make an adjustment and turn it around as quick as we can.”

Taj Gibson said Thibodeau, who started Hinrich for Rose and used Marquis Teague as the backup point guard, detailed on a blackboard during the team's morning walk-through how the Bulls need to focus and proceed without their star.

“Nobody wants to see their teammate hurt, especially because we're such a close-knit group,” Gibson said. “But Derrick has to focus on getting himself healthy. And we have to focus on getting ourselves better. We've been in this situation before. It's going to take all of us as a whole to scratch out wins.”

@ThompsonScribe: Officially, timetable for his return will be determined post-procedure. But likelihood is surgery would end his season, possibly his career

Charlotte's Jeff Taylor done for the year:
    http://blogs.charlotte.com/inside_th...s-rupture.html
Charlotte Bobcats' Jeff Taylor lost for the season with Achilles rupture

The Charlotte Bobcats have lost small forward Jeff Taylor for the season after he suffered a rupture of his right Achilles tendon, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to the Observer.

Taylor, in his second NBA season, was averaging 8.3 points and 2.4 rebounds. He became a starter eight games ago after teammate Michael Kidd-Gilchrist suffered a broken left hand in a Dec. 3 road loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

Kidd-Gilchrist isn’t expected back until sometime in January. Coach Steve Clifford said recently Kidd-Gilchrist will remain in a cast at least until Dec. 26, when he’ll be re-evaluated medically. Kidd-Gilchrist’s fracture is at the base of his left ring finger.

With Taylor and Kidd-Gilchrist both out, the Bobcats’ alternatives at small forward are Anthony Tolliver and newcomer Chris Douglas-Roberts. The Bobcats can also go small, moving shooting guard Gerald Henderson to small forward in certain situations.
