    Default NBA Rank 2013/14

    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/96...nkings-376-400

Thought we could use a thread to discuss where our Pacers land, and the #NBArank in general.

    So far:

Donald Sloan #486. I see him jumping up by the end of the year. I just see him getting minutes eventually with his handles and with improved passing.

Orlando Johnson #418. A fair ranking IMO, since its a predictor of performance this year and I just dont see OJ getting the playing time.

Side note: I think they should display ALL player tweet rebuttals for every rank. That would be hilarious.
We got a new weapon this time around: a Lance forged on the Isle de Coney, built for piercing trolls and false kings alike! Prince Paul rides with this Lance at hand, from the West fortress on Mt. Hibb. He shall pierce the demon heart of your misguided Cavalier, and he shall claim his crown.

I'm not really sure where you expect Sloan's minutes to come from unless you expect Watson to be a disappointment on the same scale as Green.

If he can focus on defense, which he is already an above average defender, similar to what PG did, he can stick in the league for awhile.
Lance + Starting SG = Awesome

    Now really free Lance!

It's based on how they expect them to play this year.

How did we rank the players?

We asked our ESPN Forecast panel to rate each player on a 0-to-10 scale, in terms of "the overall level of play for each player for the upcoming NBA season."

Yeah, I disagree with that tweet. It entirely depends on how consistent he is, if he plays at least okay defense, how well he does what the coaches expect him to do on both ends of the floor, and assuming he's a good locker room guy. If he can check those boxes, I think that's the kind of roleplayer that may move from team to team but certainly stays in the league for years. That's what I think he can be.

I disagree with the tweet as it pertains to Hill, but I agree with the sentiment, generally.

When the Pacers drafted Hill, they had a clear understanding of their environment/culture, and what type of player & personality fit that. IMO, they have a clear idea for how Solomon Hill fits with this team over the next few years, and that contemplates his skill set as a "generalist."

However, it does tend to be easier for fringe players - broadly - to catch on in the NBA, if they have one or two traits at which they excel. It makes it easier for teams to (a) see where they can provide an immediate benefit, and (b) believe in the opportunity to "coach up" their other aspects. We even saw this - in terms of opportunity - last year in the playoffs with the Pacers.

Vogel gave Gerald Green a shot at the playoff rotation, because he was looking for something very specific that Green might be able to provide - scoring. Then, when that failed, those rotational minutes were shortened, and given to Sam Young. To Vogel, Young provided very specific skillsets as well - defense and physicality. Meanwhile, Orlando Johnson never saw more than mop up minutes. Despite being arguably a more complete player than either, it was difficult for Vogel to see where he would help the team.

It may not always be right, but it is a pretty common consideration.

To put it another way, guys who are "good at everything, great at nothing" tend to get judged (fairly or unfairly) on their limitations, whereas guys with one or two dimensions at which they excel tend to get judged based on that particular excellence.

So who's next? Ian, CJ or Cope?

I say CJ is listed before the end of the day.

yeah, CJ would seem to be the next guy listed. then Ian and then Cope.

Personally I think Ian should be rated over Copeland, but nothing like playing in NY to raise your score.

Cope should be next followed by Ian then CJ, but we all know the exposure you get in NY tends to raise your stock.

Apparently playing in Brooklyn lowers your stock. Anyone who thinks DJ is better than CJ didn't watch DJ last season.

I've been halfway following the #NBARank discussion, interesting where most of our guys ended up. Everyone else looks more or less accurate, but I think David could possibly be ranked a little better (ie in the 30's). I was truly shocked to see ESPN rank Kobe at number 25. Also pretty great we put two starters in the Top 24. Where do you guys think they land? Is PG top 10? Hibbs top 15? We'll see soon.

I think David is ranked about right. I do think Orlando, CJ, GHill, and Danny should be ranked higher. I understand why Orlando is ranked low, he just doesn't have the sample size to show how good he is. I would switch him and Solo. CJ should not be ranked lower than DJ, enough said. I think GHill is underrated, mostly because he doesn't have to go out there, and be a top scoring option. I think if he had to he could easily average 18ppg. I'm not a fan of dropping a player significantly based solely off of one injury, and I am better by the end of the season Danny will have played his way back up into the 30's.

    Roy Hibbert #22!

I think this is fair considering Roy's start to last season. If he can put together a season consistently producing as he did after the All-Star break and in the playoffs, I see him jumping to top 15 territory. Curious to see where Marc Gasol and Dwight Howard land. Am I forgetting another center still on the board? If not, that makes Roy 3rd best center. Who would have predicted that when he was drafted?! Amazing.

Now where will PG land? I hope he cracks top 15, but something tells me he will show up tomorrow. Maybe 16th or 17th.

Looks like Tim Duncan is 16, either Wade or Rose is 18, and that might be PG at 17. Just looking at the images they have of the players on ESPN.
