I'm over my Irsay gruge on the whole issue, but keeping Peyton wouldn't have been any bigger hit financially than what they had to deal with the 10 years prior.

What if someone from a school of business or management school were to ask, How did you do this? How did you get the Pacers turned around? Is there a general approach you've taken that can be summarized?

    Larry Bird: Yeah, patience.

True, but 10 years ago Peyton was a young healthy player with a lot of time left, not an old guy coming off a brutal injury. He's thankfully stayed very healthy over the last two years, but I don't blame Irsay for being a bit nervous about it after being so close to the situation. Also, and perhaps most importantly, the latest CBA makes a rookie like Luck a STEAL. Freaking Alex Smith got a six year $49.5 million dollar contract when he was drafted, and we all remember that hideous Bradford contract. But the new CBA put us in a position where we could draft Luck and pay him just $22.1 million over four years, aka about one year of Manning. That's just something that didn't exist a decade ago, or even five years ago.

Irsay is definitely guilty of some spin during the whole situation, but it was just a weird scenario that no one ever envisioned would have happened. Five years ago, who would have thought that Peyton Manning would get injured so badly that he would miss an entire season in a year that just happened to feature the best prospect in the draft since Manning himself, and that the Colts would be so hideously awful without him that they would get the pick? You can't make that stuff up. Irsay never wanted it to end this way, but he just found himself in a position where Luck for the cheap price versus an old expensive coming-off-of-injury Manning was just too tempting. Plus I'm sure that for years, Irsay as the businessman had wondered how the Colts would stay popular after Manning. He found the perfect ticket in Luck.

I get all that, I don't disagree with any of it. But that's explaining why Luck makes sense over Peyton, not that Peyton's contract was a cap killer.

He was definitely guilty of trying to spin it favorably for himself and the organization, no doubt about it.

Peyton needs 266 yards next week to break the season passing yards record. He only needs 302 to go over 65k career yards. And they will likely have to play for the win. They play late and if New England beats Buffalo early, Denver will have to win to keep the #1 seed.

Oakland's pass D is awful. Manning will break the yardage mark easily.

The Pats/Bills game will be on at the same time as the Broncos/Raiders game.

This play looks like a lateral and the 7 yard pass may become a 7 yard run and cost Peyton the single season passing yardage record.

The NFL did take away a passing TD and make it a rushing TD a few years ago when Gronkowski set a season record for receiving TDs by a TE, then after the game it was re-scored as a lateral, correctly. Of course, this is more of an NFL sacred cow being affected, so we will see.

The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!)

You know I hate the precedent that's set with this (and Gronk's record) especially since they can vacate these records but not bad calls? I mean in both cases the "damage" was done. However since this changes yards and not the result of the game I guess its easier to do.

I just think it opens a can of worms here where people will wonder about other records and how "legit" they are.

They will say it's inconclusive and not take it away. It looks pretty close to me.

Imagine if they took it away they can vacate this but not the bad calls throughout the season.

    Just in: The record stands

Yeah seems rather pointless now since its already tainted with the speculation. The damage is done.

That's a lateral, obviously. It's a much bigger deal to idiots like us than it is Peyton, believe me. Only reason I knew Brees had the record is because he's a Boilermaker and it JUST happened, don't really know or care who had it before him, probably Marino. Whatever. Who scored the most points in an NBA regular season? Kareem or Wilt probably, but nobody cares.

All records were made to be broken but football passing records were REALLY made to be broken. It's like comparing Hank Aaron to the deadball era guys, it's an entirely different game.
