Default RealGm Poll: Best Player in 2017

RealGM has a poll for who you think will be the best player of 2017. Here are the options:

    LeBron
    Durant
    Wiggins
    Rose
    Drummond
    Irving
    Westbrook
    Davis

Am I the only one who thinks it is hilarious Drummond is on this list? Guys like Stephen Curry, Paul George, even John Wall are left off this list, but Andre Drummond is on it? Just thought that was interesting.

    My List:

    1. LeBron (Age:32)
    2. Durant (Age:28)
    3. P.George (Age:27)
    4. Irving (Age:25)
    5. Westbrook (Age:28)
    6. Curry (Age:29)
    7. Rose (Age:28)
    8. J.Wall (Age:26)
    9. Wiggins (Age:22)
    10.A.Davis (Age:24)

    1. LeBron
    2. Durant
    3. Paul George
    4. Anthony Davis
    5. Kyrie Irving (if he can ever stay healthy)
    6. John Wall
    7. Derrick Rose
    8. Andrew Wiggins
    9. Stephen Curry
    10. Russell Westbrook
    11. Andre Drummond

Premature as hell to put Drummond on there.

Drummond's the new Anthony Randolph, a guy who put up really impressive per-minute production at a young age, who people assume will continue to grow into a star. It didn't happen with Randolph, obviously, and assuming it will happen with Drummond to the point he'll be a candidate for the best player in the league four years from now is definitely getting ahead of oneself. The guy's scored 476 career points, for Christ's sake.

There is no way I could consider Steph Curry as one of the best players. One of the best shooters? Sure. One of the best scorers? Maybe, although I'm not as enamored with his scoring as some of you are.

But he does nothing other than shoot the ball really really well. I mean he is decent as a passer but he is not a great defender or really great at anything other than shooting. Everybody else on this list is a two way player to a point, even Durant is a good defender IMO (I know nothing about Wiggins so I can't assess).

Also I agree with with you Drummond at this point has shown nothing to state that he will be one of the best players in the NBA at that point in time. Hell I'd put Monroe up there above him if it were me.

SB Nation did a top 100 in 2017, this is where I assume this poll came from. KStat and shags'll like #3. Which I think is INSANE, but it's all for fun in the offseason. They also ranked Brook Lopez 19 spots higher than Roy, so y'know, whatever. Lance, Roy, and PG made it for us.

The only 'reasonable' way of putting players on that list is if they're already the top players right now and aren't expected to regress... Which is why putting guys like Lebron, Durant and probably Westbrook makes sense... However, the rest of the rankings are based on pure potential... Putting George in there is just as premature as putting Drummond, and putting Wiggins, who wasn't even selected in the draft yet, is even worse...

I think Curry gets to the rim and finishes pretty well, too, and it's not merely that he's a great shooter, it's that he has 40 foot range, is clutch, can get ridiculously hot, can shoot off the dribble, and can shoot when the defense is in his face. Meaning there are layers to his great shooting; to reduce it to 'one thing' would be doing his game a disservice, I think.

I also thought he was considered to be a decent passer, though not great.

So he's quick enough and a good enough ball handler to get basically wherever he wants on the floor, he can shoot from anywhere off the dribble, he can exploit drawing a double team by passing, he can finish around the basket, and he's clutch. That's quite a lot to bring to the table.

This is not an attempt by me to say Curry will be the best player in the league, and in fact I don't believe he will be. It's just that I didn't want to see his game be reduced to less than I think it is.

K, take Wiggins off and add Harden. But if you honestly think it is more likely that Drummond becomes a top 10 player in the NBA than Wiggins then you aren't the smartest guy in the world. Scouts aren't always right, but they aren't clueless and they know more than you and I do.

Well, nba scouts thought Roy hibbert was mediocre at best, so...

What a horribly baseless statement that is. Wiggins hasn't even played a minute of college basketball yet. We have no idea how good he'll be.

No. He had conditioning issues that needed to be addressed, but his style of play has not been vastly different than his play at Georgetown, apart from natural progression. He was simply misread by scouts.

Wiggins has been the second greatest NBA prospect ever. He's going to be very good. We don't know how good, but at a minimum he will be an All-Star.

    Ever? Really?

He isn't any more highly rated than wilt, Kareem Lebron or even Ralph Sampson were at the same age....

    No.

He may eventually turn out to be the best player in the world, but calling him the 2nd best prospect ever is just plain wrong. There are more HS kids than lebron and wiggins that could have been drafted #1.

Are you citing the most-hyped high school prospect in history as if that proves that high school phenoms translate? For every LeBron that turns out, there are 100 high schoolers that are "sure things" that wash out of the NBA. Not as much anymore because of the 19 year age rule, but there have been plenty of guys just like Wiggins that haven't amounted to a thing in the NBA.

Hyperbolic much? I agree that Wiggins is probably the best prospect in the upcoming draft, but an All-Star "at minimum" is ridiculous.

No, he transformed his body and his game. I doubt any player has worked harder at changing their game and their body than Roy has since he arrived in the league. His elite, elite work ethic drove him to success.

Was Lebron REALLY the most hyped? The times are a lot different now with the instant technology, but from what I understand Kareem was renowned coast to coast as a high schooler and this was the mid 60s. If he'd been a prospect during Lebron's time it'd have been INSANE.
