Default General 2013-14 NCAA athletics thread

Figure we could use a thread to talk about non-local schools and just generic stuff.

Jeff Goodman said he surveyed ~75% of D1 head coaches about the best x's and o's coach in the country, publishing the story later today. Said the top guy ran away with it. I imagine it'll be K, if on nothing but rep. Should be interesting to see the results.

It's an interesting list to say the least.

    Here's just the list:

    1. Tom Izzo, Michigan State (41 votes)
    2. John Beilein, Michigan (24 votes)
    3. Rick Pitino, Louisville (18 votes)
    4. Bill Self, Kansas (17 votes)
    5. Bob McKillop, Davidson (16)
    6. Stew Morill, Utah State (15)
    7. Mike Krzyzewski, Duke (13)
    8. Billy Donovan, Florida (12)
    9. Rick Byrd, Belmont (11)
    10. Kevin Stallings, Vanderbilt (10)
T11. Mike Montgomery, Cal. Fran Dunphy, Temple. (8)
    13. Bo Ryan, Wisconsin (7)
T14. Tom Crean, Indiana. Buzz Williams, Marquette. (6)
T16. John Calipari, Kentucky. Steve Donahue, Boston College. Mark Few, Gonzaga. (5)
T19. John Thompson III, Georgetown. Mike Brey, Notre Dame. Jim Larranaga, Miami. Joe Scott, Denver. (4)
T24. Tony Bennett, Virginia. Fred Hoiberg, Iowa State. (3)

I think Beilein and Self are too high.

Meh, I look at some of the guys around him and I don't think any are that much better or worse. I wouldn't have been shocked if he had been left off the list though either.

Honestly I think Hoiberg is too low too. He's a damn good coach. He'll be in the NBA someday.

I'm kinda shocked no Boeheim on that list. He and Roy Williams seem the obvious big names. Roy doesn't really bother me, like Self I think he's a product of schools as much as his style.

But Boeheim...I wonder if that's just a general "**** the zone" from the rest of the coaches.

BTW, Stevens received 14 votes. I don't know if the polling happened before or after the Celtics hired him though.

Probably the same guy who dumped IND - OKC for the Heat - Bobcats laugher last spring.

(Thank god that regularly airing HS sporting events on the mothership networks is a relatively recent phenomenon)

Emmanuel Mudiay, a top 5 or higher player for 2014, committed to SMU. Larry Brown up to his old tricks.

I watched him in the Tark classic and when he played Okafor the other day. He is my favorite pg in the class much better pro prospect than Jones. He is a blur quicker than most college guards watching him and Nic Moore next year will be fun. Larry is building something great at SMU.

The NCAA lowered the hammer on Texas A&M and Johnny Manziel, with a 30 minute suspension!

I whole-heartedly disagree. I'm not an OSU fan, but the NCAA set a precedence when they dropped a bomb on the Buckeyes for players EXCHANGING AUTOGRAPHS FOR TAT-****ING-TOOS!!!

30 minutes for Mr. Old Money is just another example of the SEC being the NCAA's favorite child.

two moronic wrongs don't make right. the NCAA's likeness rules are ludicrous.

If in the first place you are going to have a rule about college students not being able to make money by signing merchandise for sale, then I'd think you shouldn't just arbitrarily decide when to enforce it.
    ,
I suppose, though, that any good-hearted college kid is going to spend many hours signing 4,500 items in one month, in a hotel room, for a series of people he's never met, for nothing. Makes perfect sense.

Even if its a dumb rule he should be suspended if he broke the rule.

The suspension is a damn joke though. Did he do something wrong or not? Either suspend him or don't, but don't pretend this 30 minute crap is fooling any one.

I would venture to guess they just want him to get in some snaps in before the big Alabama game...

some UNC offensive lineman just threw a dirty *** hit on Jadeveon Clowney. ball was clearly already thrown and Clowney was turned around facing down field watching the play and the UNC guy just dove into his knees

This Ole Miss-Vandy game is a good one. I think both of these teams could be sneaky good in the SEC this season.

    Dammit, Painter Bluiett again!

(is that how that is pronounced?)

That 2014 class is looking a little empty. The Big Dog's kid that plays linebacker we signed. Can he hoop?
