Default NFL forced the Colts to remove Bradshaw from the PUP list

    via our own Mike Wells

    http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/pos...-with-bradshaw

Indianapolis Colts running back Ahmad Bradshaw may not be physically ready to to make his training camp debut after all.

But the Colts don't have the option of keeping Bradshaw, who had foot surgery earlier this year, on the physically unable to perform list any longer, according to a report.

ProFootballTalk reported that the team was forced move Bradshaw to the active roster because it committed a league violation by having the running back take handoffs during its morning walk-through practice on Aug. 4. The Colts reportedly said Bradshaw was taking "mental reps" when asked about his status that day.

We'll get a better indication of Bradshaw's health when the Colts return to practice at Anderson (Ind.) University on Tuesday. The players had Monday off after Sunday's preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Monday didn't turn out to be a good off day for the Colts. Owner Jim Irsay blasted the team for its poor performance against the Bills on Twitter. Second-year linebacker Justin Hickman will likely miss the season with a foot injury. And now the Bradshaw situation.
C'mon coaching staff. Basically they either knowingly broke league rules or they're just stupid.

    Likely the latter
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

Hmmm, the original story referenced by Wells came from Mike Florio.

And Florio previously reported the possible violation on 8/4. Here's an excerpt:

After practice, coach Chuck Pagano downplayed the situation to reporters, saying that Bradshaw is “[j]ust getting the mental reps.”

Of course, mental reps are just that. Mental. These were physical reps, given that Bradshaw actually was on the field, taking handoffs.

The Colts have been down this road before, albeit with a different regime. Five years ago, quarterback Peyton Manning, on the PUP list after offseason knee surgery, participated in a walk-through practice, which technically violated the PUP rules.

Two years ago, the 49ers came close to a violation with receiver Michael Crabtree on the PUP list. G.M. Trent Baalke apparently intervened before Crabtree’s participation in the “warm-up” phase of practice became participation in practice itself.

I'm a bit concerned that Jim publically blasted the team after one pre-season game. I hope Jim isn't becoming Bob.

They not understand the concept of the PUP. Physically unable to perform just means that. If Bradshaw is on the PUP he should be unable to take handoffs and be out there doing drills.

Seems like a really really dumb mistake to make.

The Colts hoped the NFL wouldn't take notice of it. Yeah right. Also, branding Bradshaw's handoffs taking as mental reps didn't help at all.

Hopefully that will mean that Bradshaw will make it earlier than if he were on the pup list. I loved the guy in NY and hopefully he will get the same productivity here with the Colts.
