His timing is what irritated me the most. He waits until right after the big evaluation period to spring this on us. I'm not sure that it would have changed anything (and it's possible the staff had an idea it was coming), but still. This kind of makes Robert Johnson a "must get" now. We still have the potential to land a good class, but I'm still ticked off about this.

It'll be Kentucky or Louisville, probably Louisville since that's where JaQuan Lyle is headed.

As much as it pains me to say, IU is at a BIG disadvantage recruiting against the aforementioned schools. They've recently won national championships and recruits look at their coaches as people who can get them to the NBA as soon as possible. IU's last title came before they were born and IU has struggled for much of their lifetime. I don't want to dump on the guy because he's worked his *** off getting IU back to respectability, but Crean isn't widely known as a good coach and he's not "big time" enough for these kids.

Losing Blackmon stinks, but IU will sign at least two players and still bring in a good class. It's the recent trend of in-state players turning their noses up at IU that has me more worried.

I'm actually more upset with the super early offers than the kids pulling back on their commitments. Stop offering these ****ing kids when they are freshmen. Treat offers like they are highly valuable and hard to come by--don't just toss them around. Pisses me off.
Be careful what you wish for. While i personally agree with you, there is a significant amount of Butler fans that complain that their self imposed rule that no offer comes before a player's junior year puts them behind the recruiting 8-ball.

I wish this was the way college recruiting works, but it's just not unfortunately.

This is what happens when you expect a 14 year old human to behave and think the same as an 18 year old human. I'm not all that surprised by that and I especially won't be shocked if Blackmon lands at Kentucky. I always thought it was a little odd the son of a UK grad committed to IU so early.

On a different note, James Blackmon Jr. has been tearing it up this offseason. He is already ranked in the top 25 by ESPN and will get heavy consideration for McDonald's All American status.
If Blackmon decommitting was so expected, why didn't you put something like "but it's too bad he's probably not going to be at IU anyway," when you posted this a couple weeks ago?

Sucks man...I'm worried about this class.... Lost Blackmon, didn't get Pinson or Lyle. Need to land Exum and Goodluck. If we get those two anything else is just icing on the cake and that will be a monster class. Disappointed in Blackmon tho especially if he goes to UK. Was really excited to root on him...now I could care less.

It had been almost a year since Lyles' decommitment. At the time of Lyles' decommitment it was widely speculated that Blackmon would follow, however everything he had said up to this week gave every indication he was going to IU and happy with his decision so I personally believed he actually would don the candy stripes. That does not mean there was not chatter about the possibility of him looking elsewhere.

It's one thing to lose a recruit to some also-ran program but players like Pinson and Lyle chose bluebloods with much more recent success.

Blackmon and Lyles will also choose some school that has made recent deep tourney runs. Such is the nature of bog time collegiate athletics. I would be curious to know which coaches got in these kids ears.

So, what does anyone think we should be watching for IU football-wise as the season approaches?

I haven't scrutinized the schedule, but I'm thinking my expectation is to at least be in bowl contention in the last 2 weeks of the season, which would mean we're talking minimum 5-6 wins. That would be a continued improvement over Wilson's first two seasons.

I'm not expecting much from this year's class simply from an experience issue. It would seem if the offense isn't good, there's a problem. Still doubt we'd be capable of of fielding much D at this point (if ever), so the O will have to be good.

He's maintained he wants to play college ball, but who knows. He would prolly be top 10 in 2014. Maybe he wants to wait for the 2015 draft so he can be top 5 or even first pick.

The offense is going to score a ton of points.

He is top 3 in this draft IMO easy. I would have him 2nd only to Wiggns special talent. He is what everybody wanted MCW to be. Don't have to dream about him he already is advanced. I hope he goes to IU would love to watch him live. I just don't see it. Guys say they want college all the time, hell Goodwin last year said no way he was going pro but he did. Talk is cheap we will have to wait and see. To me it is like the 8th grad commits. It happens where they stay committed, but its the exception not the rule. Exum could be the exception but it would shock me. I know if I was in his situation I would go pro and go back to school later.

This, exactly. And it's not because Exum might go to IU, if any kid has anything resembling a guaranteed NBA contract he should take it immediately. People love to talk about "go to school, get an education." Colleges aren't going anywhere, get a guaranteed deal and pay for school with a month of game checks later if that's what you want.

I miss the days when kids played college basketball because they WANTED to, not because they HAD to.

Also, I think it's comical that foreigners can enter the draft straight from high school but Americans have to wait a year.

Foreigners have to wait until they're 19 years old. The minimum age for them got moved up when they eliminated the prep-to-pro. And Exum will be 19 by the draft.

It's a completely different system for foreigners. Many of them turn pro at 14, 15, 16 years old, especially in Europe.

I really don't think Exum would be a top 3 pick right now without college. 2014 draft is gonna be stacked. And the level of competition in div one college is way better than what Exum is playing with in Austrailia. I could definitely see people like Wiggins, Parker, Randle, Harrison brothers, Smart, Harris, Robinson III, etc ahead of him. Who knows. Maybe he doesn't care where he's drafted so maybe he will go pro next year. But if he does care about possibly being the number one pick, then maybe he waits another year. I'd love to see him play at IU.

For what it's worth, Chad Ford has him listed at #3 on his Big Board right now.

I mean...I guess, but still, it's unlikely he falls out of the lottery at the very least even when the college season plays itself out.
