Agreed. Wilson isn't getting fired and if IU can beat Illinois and Purdue that would get us to five wins and an improvement over last season at least.
Honestly, even if we win those two (and I'm slightly less than convinced we will), I have a hard time calling this season much of an "improvement" over last year. If you just go by win totals, then yeah, it's an improvement, but with the schedule and all the returning young players we had, there is no excuse for this team not to go to a bowl game. I'm not quite to the point where I want Wilson fired, but each week that he employs Doug Mallory nudges me further in that direction.

Purdue's going to win. Clearly, the Boilers are saving all of their offense this year for the Bucket game.

What worries me is that these kids don't even seem to understand football basics. Where is the coaching? Defense consistently blows assignments/coverage, telegraphs blitzes, generally does very stupid things. Starting RB doesn't even know a dropped lateral is a live ball. QB doesn't know to throw the ball past LOS or throw it away.

This is a very, very stupid team. And that's reflective of coaching.

I still say, just for sake of ever hoping to attract anyone worth half a damn, you gotta give Wilson another 2 years. No one will ever want to coach at IU if they bail on you after 3-4 seasons in trying to completely overhaul a complete joke of a program. 5-6 years feels fair, and enough time to have reversed fortunes, though. If Wilson isn't doing it then, he never will.

Still, I see the complete lack of awareness by everyone on that team, I see Wilson going for 2 when no metric/study/philosophy whatsoever justifies it, and while I can see argument talent will improve, I do not see much evidence coaching will.

Even if we get 5 wins. I dont think that signals an actual improvement from last year. Just played easier opponents.

It may not be the best comparison, but this feels like Crean's third season.

Year 1: losing big, no expectations, total wash.

Year 2: slightly improved, but still lousy.

Year 3: expected to take a big step, but something is holding the program back (in this case, pretty obvious what that is).

We all know what happened in Crean's fourth season. I'm not saying the same thing will happen here, but I think you have to give Wilson one more year, and maybe even a fifth season. If he still hasn't reached a bowl by 2015, it's perfectly justifiable to fire him and we don't pay nearly as much on the buyout.

Personally, I think hiring an average D-coordinator would get us over the hump in spite of Wilson's bizarre decisions.

I think the difference here though is there was discernible growth with Crean each year. Where as with Wilson the team is basically the same Results wise. And the fact that Crean started with a much barer cabinet.

I don't think Crean's third year was better. That team regressed with a last place finish and three conference wins instead of four.

thing is though, even if they did fire him, what are ya gonna do then?
hire a new guy who will need another 3-4 years and hope it works out?
getting a good coach for iu football seems to be nearly impossible. it seemed we were on our way with hep to returning them to a mallory-like level of success (which i am fine with) but of course we couldn't be allowed to have that kind of good fortune. i think the program would be doing pretty good if hep were still around.

The difference between 3 and 4 wins in basketball is nil. Very easily impacted by strength of schedule. Considering how tough the conference was his third year very possible they played a tougher one.

Crean had a better record outside of the conference, which at this point you would be hard pressed to even say about Wilson.

Creans third year though he beat a ranked team for the first time. Following it up with a OT loss on the road by a mere 1 point. Followed by a road win after that his first against a team that finished higher than us IIRC, then another close loss.

Calipari got his game in Indy anyway against of all teams the one a lot of people wanted to replace UK on the schedule, Kansas. He is a wiley ******* who may in fact be a demon.

We're splitting hairs at this point, but that team didn't win a game outside of Bloomington. They also tanked after that stretch you mentioned and didn't win another game the rest of the season. It was hard to feel good about where we were headed when that season ended, even with Cody Zeller arriving a few months later.

I wish we had this year's Champion's Classic but having next year's will still be pretty cool.

IU won their opening game 100-72 over Chicago State.

The game was over at halftime. Sure the competition was bad but this team is way more athletic than any IU has had in quite some time. They had over 10 blocked shots and dominated the boards.

Hollowell had 16 points to lead the Hoosiers and Noah Vonleh had a double double.

This team will have its ups and downs but won't ever lack for excitement. Next year they are going to be lethal with all the shooters coming in.

They won more games with a significantly tougher schedule and advanced metrics showed them to be a more competitive team. What wans't to feel better about?

Where as in Wilsons third year the Big 10 is down, and we can't even do as well. Thats regressing, MAYBE MAYBE if we are lucky holding pat.

LIU Brooklyn is a good team it's not like their Samford or Northern Kentucky or some **** like that. They've been to the NCAA Tourney three years in a row. And they have a lot of upper class men...I expected us to win by like 10, but I'm not surprised that the game is this close right now. We are a young team, were gonna get better as the year goes on. The talent is there. Hopefully we can close this out! Go IU!

Their original play call was literally to just send a guard down the lane bouncing into people looking for a whistle. Going to love watching college bball this year

This is going to be a brutal season. Freshmen do a lot of dumb ****. Makes you appreciate Cody Zeller's awesome fundamentals his freshman year even more. Oh, and this officiating is brutal. College officials are 1,000x worse than NBA officials, and now we toss more rules and influence over a game their way? What can go wrong?
