Not a great comparison. It's really hard to compare the pro game to the college game. It's just a different animal.

The best comparison for IU basketball is right in their own state: Notre Dame football. Haven't won a national title since the 80s, had a string of terrible coaching hires, made one run last season to the national title game (like our '02 year), but fell back to Earth this year. Personally, I like Brian Kelly and as long as he doesn't bolt for the NFL they will keep competing at a higher level than they had the past 15-20 years, but it's a pretty strong comparison.

Yes, Notre Dame football is a good comparison. I wasn't comparing the trials and tribulations of IU directly to what the Celtics went through. Instead, I was just making an abstract comparison to another sports entity that went through a 15 year period of living off nothing but the past, much like IU does now.

I'd be pretty surprised if we had seen our last transfer. Good times at Indiana!

I realized today that Crean is basically the Chicken Soup for the Soul books on twitter.

Out of six recruiting classes, Crean has had only one in which no one transferred (2010-Oladipo and Sheehey).

Etherington leaving isn't a problem in terms of production, but having transfers each year doesn't reflect well on the program. For every Zeller and Yogi that Crean has landed, he's brought in about 2-3 additional players that don't do much and leave after a year or two. In a way, we're sort of becoming like Kentucky in terms of not having upperclassmen, except ours keep transferring instead of going pro.

Doesn't Yogi at least have to think about getting out now? He's probably a 2nd rounder at best, but I can't imagine he will be able to improve his draft stock by staying on Crean's sinking ship any longer.

I don't think Yogi will improve draft stock by staying at IU... But I'm not sure turning pro now is the answer to that. If he really thinks he's got a shot at being a first round draft pick I'm not sure staying at IU will get him there though. The ship is sinking...

Transferring to some place like Kansas where they're in need of a point guard, and will put talent around him wouldn't be a bad alternative.

But then you have to factor in sitting out a year. Although if I was him and felt I was potential NBA material I'd take that gamble because I really believe what I said sometime back and that is things will turn bad for Crean fast and this ship will be headed to the bottom in record time.

Crean can't coach and he needs a well-stocked team to even compete. But the well-stocked team won't get maximized because Crean can't coach. At a high profile school like IU this gets obvious quickly. So that will quickly hurt recruiting from a number of angles. And since Crean can't coach it will go from bad to worse in record time.

this stuff's just sort of becoming the norm now. Purdue and IU being down right now obviously doesn't help team morale, but look around the country, kids are transferring all over the place. I think the number's something like 40% of players will play at more than one school in their career.

Both of our programs are dumpster fires right now. No need to sugarcoat it.

yep, this ship is sinking and quickly. i don't see crean as being able to fix this either. he needs to have exceptional talent just to be competitive and needs to have something approaching '92' dream team level talent before i'd say he has a realistic shot at a title. plus, with all the guys who have been transferring and whatnot, can't help but think it gets other h.s. players wondering about what is going on over there.
i am feeling more and more confident that next season will be a repeat of this year- maybe worse.

I'm not denying the programs being shitshows and that not helping, but it's true about the transfers. I don't have a problem with it really, but I'd hate being an old school type college coach at a high major program with this generation of kids.

lol...get Crean out of here so we can hire someone who's marginally better than him if we're lucky. I still can't get anyone to throw a name out there. Who is the coach if not Crean? IU's best hope at this point is to strike gold on an unknown coach, but then the IU fanbase would just kill the AD for handing the reigns of what they still contend is a flag ship program even though it's really not...

Go back a couple of pages if you want names. Whether they are "realistic" or not is up to your interpretation, as well as them being "marginally" better than him.

They aren't firing Crean this year, so what's the point in throwing out names? They will all be different next year. Shaka Smart, Gregg Marshall, Archie Miller, Brad Stevens, who the **** knows?

If we "strike gold" with an unknown coach we are going to revolt against the AD because he made a great hire? What kind of sense does that make?

    Edited for crankiness.

    My whining diva act aside...

It's more of the timing of the transfers and all the talk of "culture" problems within the program that make this bad. I think as far as on the court is concerned, these aren't terribly important losses. Hollowell was a huge disappointment and AE was never very good. It would be huge if we could get Anthony Lee, and I think we are in a good position to get Cunningham. Shooting will be better next year with JBJ's arrival alone. Count me as a big Devin Davis fan too. Dude plays balls out.
