I can't remember where, but I know I read somewhere that Bird was hazed pretty badly as a freshman and the guys who did it went too far. It's one thing to be homesick when you're on your own for the first time, but getting picked on probably made it a lot worse.
yep, bird has a very, very strong dislike for one person in particular- kent benson.

Back in 1976, the Fledgling Basketball Jesus enrolled at Indiana University and left after a few unhappy weeks, eventually settling down at Indiana State two years later. During his brief I.U. stage, Bird felt that some of the veteran players on the team, including Benson, hadn't been very nice to him. So when he made the NBA, he went out of his way to embarrass Benson -- a mediocre big man for the Pistons -- at every opportunity. This culminated in Kevin McHale's 56-point game in 1985, when Bird kept feeding McHale on the low post because Benson couldn't handle him. The lesson, as always: Don't mess with Larry Bird.
Benson got ejected after 2 Ts.

IU women now at 14-0 after knocking off #22 Iowa in their Big Ten opener. The team starts three freshmen. Unreal job by Curt Miller. Think he could coach the men's team too?

Still need to confirm but I'm told very likely Cody Latimer/WR/Indiana will enter the draft..

=(..... Please stay Cody!! But if he leaves Coleman needs 25 carries a game.. minimum, and we really need Booth now

Friendly tip: Slow the pace down, Hoosiers. Just a tad. Every single player on this team is careless with the ball, and Crean seems to be fine with it. Value possessions.

Yogi and Vonleh are the only people who can score.... If we can get those two to stay and add James Blackmon Jr. and Robert Johnson we could be set

Please start Stanford Robinson for Hollowell from now on, at least Robinson can score, what does Hollowell give us?

    Yogi
    Robinson
    Williams
    Sheehey
    Vonleh

I don't care if we start 3 freshmen, its our best line-up

Apparently Crean doesn't want to give his younger players some experience in a lost game. I doubt he believes they can come back from 18 down with less than a minute left.

This is the danger zone for Crean and IU... When the reality that he's not a very good X and O coach settles in solidly it will hurt his real bread and butter- His energy and salesmanship. Those things work for recruiting and they work to get a collection of athletes to get charged up and go out on the floor and 'do it'. But the other side of the coin is the 'it' doesn't have much substance. The questions and murmurs will grow louder. The potential recruit pool will shrink with players deciding that he might be fun to play for but the team isn't going to be much of an NCAA threat except when they can just out-talent someone and not be out-coached. Recruits that do come will be quick to consider transferring. Distractions will grow. All of this will simply hurt the team more because it'll be harder and harder to sell the system when they can't recruit enough athletes to even successfully win just by out-talenting opponents and suddenly even the creampuff games on the schedule will become potential nail biters.

I think he's had his run. I don't know that there is an 'up' from here. Personally, I think people should've seen some of this even sooner because I think he did a fairly poor job during those first few years of actually eeking out some wins with just coaching. But he rode the excuse that the team was decimated (it was) and he'd need time to recruit 'his' players. I don't disagree with that to a point but I still thought there should be feel good upsets along the way and there wasn't really. But still, he had his excuse, and he had his energy. The excuse was legit and he did start getting talent to consider Bloomington again. But that NCAA dismantling by Syracuse confirmed a lot of murmurs and growing concerns for a lot of people. That wasn't an off night, that was a team ill-prepared to play their opponent.

I think you can go ahead and start the clock on the end of Crean era. Sure, there might be a light at the end of the tunnel... but it's a train. I think he'll be back next year but I wouldn't put any money on the following year.
Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

The problem is Crean's contract. His contract was originally supposed to end in 2018, but we extended to it 2020 in 2012 after we made the Sweet 16. I get that we were excited about the Sweet 16 season and victory over UK, but why in the hell would you extend a contract that still had six freaking years left? That's just reckless and completely unnecessary.

That's not a problem. There are enough big money boosters that will happily empty their deep pockets for IU basketball.

Why in the world is IU playing Michigan State and Illinois twice so early in the conference schedule?

So far IU has won the games they're supposed to win and lost the games they're supposed to lose, so they're consistent if nothing else.

Yeah, you're probably right. But it's just a bit ridiculous when you have to turn to alumns because your athletic directors are foolish with the contracts they give out. Giving Crean a 10 year deal in 2008 was too much to begin with, though I guess I kind of understand it because we had to tempt him since program was completely in the gutter. But giving him a 2 year extension in 2012 when he still had 6 years left? That's just the silliest thing I've ever heard. What would we have done if we made the Final Four last year? Give him 10 more years?

That **** happens all the time in college sports. It just seems to be the modus operandi. I don't totally get it either.

Good. Vonleh leaves, IU sucks again next year, misses the tourney two years in a row, Crean enters the next season with his seat on fire, he self combusts, gets fired at year end. Brad Stevens has had enough of the NBA experience and the rebuild in Boston, sees an opportunity to return to the heartland, takes the IU job and we actually get a coach who can, you know, coach.

    We can dream...
