If Mallory isn't gone by the end of the week I will be extremely worried about the future of our defense....

If Wilson doesn't fire Mallory then he puts a bunsen burner under his own seat for next season.

Execution against the zone looked better toward the end of the half. Let's hope it continues.

Looked better in general. I liked the back cuts. Just much better movement this time around. When our big guys get the ball in the middle of the zone, they panic a little bit though. Not totally unexpected seeing as how they are just freshmen, but still, we aren't winning this game without a monster effort from Yogi.

No, we don't. Our shooting is probably our biggest weakness.

I made it to the second half under-12 timeout before turning it off. That's a little farther than I thought I'd make it.

I think our bigs are just suffocating at the moment.

Chalk most of it up to youth/inexperience. Still not convinced Crean can effectively coach against zone D though. At points in first half it looked like there was some better execution. Of course second half we rarely got to a point where you go into offense we were so poor. Some good athleticism at least.

Excuse me if I place ZERO value in the inane ramblings of a kid that picks teams to root for by throwing darts at a board.

He is 0-5 against Boeheim and 0-infinity against Bo Ryan. Those are two of the best coaches in the game and better than Crean. What can we do about it?

I went to work out at halftime and was pretty stoked I missed the onslaught in the second half.

I didn't realize Evan Gordon was only 6', thought he was like 6'4ish. Guy looked smaller than Yogi.

yep and i think those numbers will continue to get worse. crean has certain flaws such as stubbornly refusing to ever try a zone himself even when other teams do it against us to great success and under him, i think the next screen i see the Hoosiers do will be the first.
ryan understands perfectly well that crean relies on transition points and if you stop that and force iu to play half court- they are like a fish out of water.
but at least it showed iu how far they have to go now that they finally played a big time team.
when he first came here, i understood the necessity of playing div.2 and other small schools because our talent wasn't any better than theirs.
however, the scheduling hasn't changed at all since he got here. we still stack the deck with a dozen or so games at home about ever 2-3 days against these types of schools. sure it is an easy way to pad the record but you just don't learn much if anything as to where you really stand and it doesn't force the players to understand what it takes to play against the top teams.
i get a strong feeling that if it weren't for the big10 acc matches, we would have scheduled another cupcake at the hall instead.

You guys ran plenty of zone, there was some 2-3, little bit of a 1-3-1, but it seemed like Crean switched off and on a lot. That's his problem for me, being adaptive is great, Painter not ever altering the defense is a massive problem I have with him (this roster's built for a 1-3-1), but Crean's way too quick with it with such a young squad. I don't want to really call it panicking but he doesn't let kids settle into a scheme.

I'm trying to remember, how long has Crean been coach? I know he was ther for Geezer Jr's freshman or sophomore year because we have a photo of Jr sitting with Crean in the stands at an IU football game. Jr didnt have much time for going to games after his sophomore year.

Anyway, isn't the honeymoon about over?

It's his sixth season as head coach. The honeymoon isn't over for most, although the whispers of his questionable in game coaching have gotten louder since he has accumulated actual talent on the roster.

LOL what IU team are you watching. They don't have one good shooter on the team. Yogi is getting there, but he needs to keep it up for me to call him a good shooter.

If IU had a few shooters they would be poised to make a run this year in the big 10. I like their bigs but no way you can win with their outside play.

Yeah that would make sense if I didn't graduate there in 2004. Done now? Wow, if SU would've lost you guys would've let me have it. Calm down it's just a game.

As Cdash noted, it's his sixth season.

I don't have faith in us ever making a deep tournament run with Crean. We had two of the top four NBA draft picks last year, yet we couldn't even get to the Elite 8. Crean gets credit for rescuing the program out of the hell it was in, but I don't have faith in him ever leading us to a Final Four.

I thought we had no clue about how to attack a zone at any point from a half court set, but we had a fortunate stretch there late in the first half where we succeeded in pushing the ball up court into the lane before the zone was fully in place.

The 2nd half was a nightmare.

I am wavering on Crean. He can recruit well. He prefers up tempo and guard-oriented play (though we are not guard-oriented right now) and I think both philosophies make sense on the college level.

But the mind-numbing substitution patterns and seeming lack of in-game adjustments is frustrating.

I don't think he can coach us to final four level success without having multiple veteran stars with high basketball IQ making proper adjustments on their own, whether he is asking them to do so or not.
The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!)
