When I think 80's music, I always think of what I saw on Friday Night Videos. Some of you may remember that program. It showed vids on one of the networks before MTV and cable became widespread. Some of mine would qualify more as rock music than pop but they were definitely all played enough to qualify as pop.

Dire Straits - Money for Nothing - My friends and I would air guitar this one all day. We were awesome. This was before anyone knew what an incredible guitarist Mark Knopfler is.
Michael Jackson - Billy Jean - Thriller was a great album, song, and video, but this is hands down MJ's best in my opinion.
Duran Duran - Hungry Like the Wolf - Weird lyrics, still sounds great
Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance - My favorite song to karaoke since you don't have to actually be able to sing. Right up my alley.
The Cars - Moving in Stereo - Technically a 70's song, but almost nobody heard it until the Phoebe Cates pool scene from Fast Times at Ridgemont High in '82.....
Bon Jovi - Runaway - I know it sounds dumb, but I used to use this song to show off my car stereo. It sounded GREAT cranked up to 11.
Prince - Little Red Corvette - For a while it seemed like this was the only song they played on the radio.
AC/DC - Back in Black - To me this is the very definition of classic rock.
Tone Loc - Wild Thing - I remember skating to this at the Wigwam in North Terre Haute. Tons of fun.
Beastie Boys - No Sleep 'til Brooklyn - A few weeks ago this came on the radio and my 6 year old went bananas over it. Thought it was cool that I had the CD.

Cool! Keep em coming. Don't have to list 10 if you don't want to. Anybody remember the Jackson Browne song Lawyers In Love? How about The Rain by Oran Juice Jones? Those sound obscure but they got a lot of airplay.

Oh I could do a Top 100 I bet. I was born in '76 so I cut my teeth on all of the '80s music. I rattled off the above in my head in about 30 seconds.

I know I could list thousands off the top of my head because that was when I was learning drum set and I listened to everything for ideas for beats and fills.

(I chose two songs released in late 1979)

    10. "Hungry Like the Wolf"
    9. "I Melt With You"
    8. "You Make My Dreams"
    7. "Where the Streets Have No Name"
    6. "Message in a Bottle"
    5. (Whoa! I'm halfway there) "Livin' on a Prayer"
    4. "Jane"
    3. "Under Pressure"
    2. "Hold the Line"

    I don't know what I'm choosing,
    But I sure know what I ain't,
    Thinking of the premises
    of the songs of yesterday,
And I've made up my mind,
I ain't wasting no more time,
    It's "Here I Go Again"

I'm more of an early-80s guy than a late-80s guy. Early 80s had all the great new-wave bands, a bunch of great one-hit wonders, and some holdover 70s rock. In the late 80s the pop songs got a lot wussier and the rock bands became cheesy hair bands (though I do enjoy the occasional guilty-pleasure hair band ballad).

I'm a big fan of "college rock" or "alternative" or whatever the name was for that in the 80s, but the OP is asking for "FM Hits." I was in grade school during this period and was fascinated with the radio - I listened to Casey Kasem's countdown every Sunday and watched Friday Night Videos years before we got cable/MTV. Here are some of the songs I remember making the biggest impression on me, in no particular order, these were the major ones but there were many more…

    A Flock of Seagulls - I Ran
Prince - Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry… (basically all of Purple Rain)
    ZZ Top - Legs
Huey Lewis - I Want a New Drug
Men At Work - Down Under, Who Can It Be Now
The Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me (and a bunch of others)
The Cars - You Might Think
The Pretenders - Middle of the Road
Michael Jackson - Billy Jean, Beat It… (basically all of Thriller)
Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World
    Hall + Oates - Maneater
Duran Duran - Hungry Like the Wolf, Rio, The Reflex
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams, Here Comes the Rain Again
    INXS - What You Need
Madonna - Like a Virgin, Material Girl
    UB40 - Red Red Wine
Talking Heads - Burning Down the House
Joan Jett - I love Rock N Roll
    Billy Idol - White Wedding
    Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue
The Go'Go's - Our Lips are Sealed, We Got The Beat
Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Want to Have Fun
The Clash - Rock the Casbah
Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days
    Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over
    Steve Miller Band - Abracadabra
The Fixx - One Thing Leads to Another
Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science
Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart
    David Bowie - Let's Dance
Queen - Another One Bites the Dust
Chaka Kahn - I Feel For You
    Night Ranger - Sister Christian
Pat Benatar - Love is a Battlefield
    The Time - Jungle Love
Sheila E. - The Glamorous Life
Janet Jackson - Nasty, Control, Pleasure Principle (basically the whole "Control" album)
Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight
Tom Petty - Don't Come Around Here No More
    Stevie Nicks - Stand Back
Robert Plant - In the Mood
John Mellencamp - Pink Houses, Jack & Diane
Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart
    Cameo - Word Up
Howard Jones - Things Can Only Get Better

No one outside of a few thousand people had any clue who Nirvana was until late 1991 when Teen Spirit broke. Bleach definitely wasn't FM radio material when it came out, except maybe in Seattle. No one I know considers Nirvana an 80s band...

Did you know Video Killed the Radio Star? Damn how prophetic that turned out to be.

80s???? I liked both Alternative and Heavy Metal. Right from good ole Indy was one of the greatest in the Zero Boys during that time!

What I liked about the 80's and even early 90's (very early) was that top 40 radio was not completely dominated by one form of music and you could easily tune in and still hear actual rock music on the radio without having to turn to a pure metal station. It was great to hear slow and easy by whitesnake followed up by Africa by Toto followed by Land down under by Men at Work followed up by sugar walls by Sheena Easton. Well I could have done without that last one but you get my point.

I'll throw in this song that wouldn't leave my head during the 80s.

    The Motels.... Only the Lonely.

Only to be surpassed by the 90s tune.... You Get What You Give.

Played that song a few years ago in a couple of bands with female singers I was in. The song that sticks in my head from the 90's is Wonderwall by Oasis.

That is so weird. I was going to post both Wonderwall and Tubthumping but I just went with one. Swear to God

Another one that sticks is All Star by Smash Mouth.

Might not be the greatest song but Sheena Easton singing about her private parts......wowsa! Certainly one of the most erotic. There was a rumor a long time ago that Sheena had a thing for news anchor Peter Jennings so she sent him nude photos of herself. Lucky son of a b****
