Default Bumped: Josh Smith agrees to $56 million deal with Pistons

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--jo...190432543.html

    By Adrian Wojo

Josh Smith has agreed to a four-year, $56 million deal with the Detroit Pistons, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Pistons pursued Smith the hardest, with agents Brian Dyke and Wallace Prather reaching an agreement with Detroit general manager Joe Dumars on Saturday morning, sources said.

Smith, 27, is one of the NBA's most unique and versatile talents, a 6-foot-9 forward who averaged 17.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Atlanta Hawks last season.

Smith joins a promising young frontcourt that includes forward Greg Monroe and center Andre Drummond.

Atlanta had been hopeful of working a sign-and-trade agreement with Smith, but he ultimately was able to sign directly into the Pistons' salary-cap space.

I agree 14 million bucks is a little much for Smith, but to get a sought after talented free agent to join a bad Detroit team when other offers are presumably on the table they have to overpay on some level.

FWIW I think Smith is a pretty good player who recieves a lot of questionable criticism.

Don't like the fit, but Smith is a borderline all-star. Smith and Drummond should make for an elite defensive frontcourt.

Pistons will still have about 8 to 9 million in cap room to sign a wing and a backup PG.

Signing a role player with attitude and work-ethic issues to a $56M contact? That's our Joe! Maybe Ben Gordon and Charlie V. can come show him around the city... whatever's left of it.

    Excellent

Hate the fit. Hate Josh in general. Big time chucker. Poor effort.

    Enjoy, Detroit

Think a Monroe trade is in the cards? I think the Pistons will start Smith at SF for a while, but I can't imagine that lasting long.

Monroe for Rondo will be discussed in the media for the next 12 months unless one team massively exceeds expectations or one of those players drops off a cliff.

BTW, people accusing Josh Smith of not giving effort remind me of the people that said the same thing about rasheed. It's mostly speaking out of ignorance.

He's absolutely inconsistent on offense and he has poor shot selection, but defensively he has never been lazy. His blowups in Atlanta mostly occurred because he got pissed at teammates for slacking off on defense.

This deal will be the end of Dumars in Detroit.

Nope. I think the Pistons will start Smith, Monroe, and Drummond, but Smith will act as the backup 4 and Monroe the backup 5. Singler could come in for Drummond if he gets into foul trouble, for example. So I don't see them spending 30 minutes a night playing together.

Another thing with the cap room is that maybe the Pistons can now amnesty Villanueva. There's absolutely no need for him, but his salary counts towards the floor.

One more random thought. Josh Smith may help make Jonas Jerebko a useful NBA player for the first time in 4 years. He covers up for his weaknesses when they're on the floor together.

Like I said on the other thread I dont think this signing is bad as some think, sure he is not a leader and his knickname is not BAMF but the guy is young and is a pretty damn good player.

The guy can pretty much do anything on the basketball court, defend, rebound, pass, steal, block shots, my only question is how he is going to fit with the team and if he is finally going to grow up.

If he's shooting .465, then he's not chucking nearly enough for me to care.

Rasheed took a lifetime of bad shots in one good week. I don't regret one day he spent here.

I care about defense first, rebounding second. I grew up with that as a Piston fan from day one. If you can bring me both of those, you're on my good side forever.

Good analysis. So the guy must get to the rim quite a bit. Seems like a pretty good player.
