2014 draft set for May 8-10

Colin Cowherd discusses the 2014 NFL draft being held on May 8-10 next season and the possibility that it will be held outside of New York City.

The NFL draft will be held in May instead of April in 2014, taking place from the 8th to 10th of the month at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, the league officially announced Tuesday.

The league said no decision has been made on changes to dates for the 2015 draft and beyond.

"A variety of alternatives are being explored, teams were told, including holding the draft at Radio City or at other locations, either in the New York area or in other cities," the league said in its statement.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said at the NFL's spring meetings in Boston last week that the league was shifting the draft to May because Radio City Music Hall is scheduled to host an Easter show in April.

In addition, the NFL said Tuesday that the scouting combine in Indianapolis would be held Feb. 18-25 in Indianapolis and the 2014 league year and free-agency period would begin on March 11. The league's annual meetings will be held in Orlando on March 23-26.

The NFL said the change in the date for the 2014 draft will have no effect on the length of team's offseason programs.

"Clubs will have available to them the same number of practice days that they currently have, and no changes in the offseason calendar are being considered that would reduce the number of practice days or the overall length of the offseason program," the league said.

Ugh, this means that an important chunk of the NBA playoffs will be drowned out by draft hype.

That is the league's plan. It's all about keeping people focused on them and their network.

I love the NFL, but I think that is a pretty selfish. The NFL is about squeezing out every last cent possible. I realize that is how businesses operate in general, but the NFL seems to take it to a different level. I don't understand why they have to butt into a crucial point of the NBA playoffs.

Don't really care, I don't pay attention to the draft although I look into the Colts picks after the fact. If your name is not Mel Kiper I don't see how anyone has the time to pay much attention to prospects outside the first 40 picks or so.

Agreed. I just don't really like how the draft hype will cut into the heart of the NBA playoffs. That's the NBA's time to shine. I'm biased though because while I love NFL football, I really don't give a rat's a** about the draft. The only time I've really cared is when it was the unique situation with Luck a year ago. I guess I cared with Manning in 98, but I was just a very young kid at the time. I don't watch college football, so I really don't know any of the players from Adam.

The first round will overshadow everything, but days 2-3 of the draft are typically an afterthought. I don't blame the NFL for this. They are positioning a 'big' event in every month of the offseason to make sure they're at the forefront of all conversation. For a league that has the longest offseason, it's a pretty smart move.

Maybe this gives the NBA an excuse to start the regular season around Christmas instead. Would push playoffs back to June when nothing is going on anyway.
