The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

  • Odd Thought's: Round 2 Game 2 2013 NBA playoffs

Coming away 2-0 would have been outstanding, not mandatory but it would have made this series a lot easier. We never seem to like to take the easy way.

Look there will be no excuse making here tonight, we were just beat and beaten badly. The Knicks just executed their offense with impunity for the most part and well our offense is what our offense is. It’s workable on our best days and it is the Titanic when things go wrong and tonight we hit an iceberg but it was an iceberg of our own making.

Don’t get me wrong the Knicks upped the defensive pressure and we just did not respond, well that’s not true we responded but we responded very poorly. So full credit to them, they took us out of any semblance of an offensive game that we can work with and just encouraged us to be what we so desperately at times want to be, a jump shooting extravaganza. However our jump shooting is as accurate as 5 O’clock Charlie (it’s an old M.A.S.H. episode look it up)

Even our coach was off tonight and no it wasn’t just that bizarre time out he took, which his post game excuse just rang hallow btw. We desperately needed someone to set some solid picks & yet that is just not the way we play. It’s all post ups all the time and when it’s not that it’s around the horn until someone decides to take an ill fated three. He’s going to have to do what he did in the Atlanta series and change things up a bit on the offensive side.

I mean honest to God how do you let a team go on a 30-2 run? Is it a fault of the defense or the offense and the answer is yes. However I am going to depart from the standard issue response and say that in this case it was actually more a problem with the offense. You are not going to stop a team from scoring every time, although they did a pretty good job of stopping us every time. But at some point in time you have to put the ball in the basket and for more than a quart of the game we could not do that.

It’s not rocket science btw. All the Knicks were doing was hard doubling the post and playing the passing lanes and because we are at best questionable ball handlers and generally **** poor shooters this just was a recipe for the crap soufflĂ© that the Pacers served forth and called it offense.

Now one thing I will give poor Frank credit for is this. Is there another coach alive who has to make the decision to play his starters for 48 min. for fear that even 75 seconds from a backup won’t change the entire outcome of a game? I mean Sam Young sabotages the first quarter in game one but fortunately there was time to recover and tonight Jeff Pendergraph did everything in his power to earn a contract with the Knicks in his short time on the floor. There was no time to recover from this.

Don’t get me wrong Jeff didn’t directly cost us the game but in a way his inability and frankly the inability of any of our bench players to hold their own and allow the starters any form of a breather did take it’s toll because I think by the 4th quarter Roy was gassed.

The bench has had a few games from a few players who have actually been beneficial this season but overall I’m sorry but that bench is a giant disaster who once again is going to have to be upgraded as soon as this season is over, no matter when it ends (short of us winning a title).

But honestly while the bench was lousy (although once again D.J. played a few solid min.) our starters were nothing to shout about either.

Roy was acceptable to a point because he still played solid defense and tried to control the boards. His point total was low but again like I said they were hard doubling every single time we attempted to pass into the post so they just limited our ability to even get him a shot.

Other than that though every other starter had an issue. But my ire tonight is saved for none other than he who is often above question.

David West was both soft and lazy. How many times did we see him stand there not even making an effort to foul someone (I don’t mean touch foul I mean foul them so they didn’t get a layup). But the sequence that will haunt me is the time Roy stepped over and defended the driver and either got his hand on it or caused them to throw up some slop that was well off. Instead of picking up Roy’s man like he is supposed to and boxing out Chandler, West stood there firmly planted to the ground as if he were solely responsible for maintaining gravity on that particular part of the floor while Tyson grabbed the errant shot and rammed it through as though he were a Dwarven Blacksmith hammering uru metal trying to forge Mjolnir.

Then to top it off West turned around and shot an evil eye look to either Lance or Hill (they were both there I think) as if it was their responsibility to pick up Tyson Chandler even though West had interior position.

He also through a couple of “what the hell are you doing” passes that made me want to jump off of a building.

Needless to say I just wasn’t real happy with David tonight. I don’t blame him for his lack of offensive production because as I said they were hard doubling the post but he really didn’t do anything else to help us with this game either.

Did Frank throw in the towel a little early? Honestly he probably should have save us all the trouble and threw it in at the end of the 3rd quarter. But in seriousness I have no problem with people who are going to have a problem with him bringing in the deep bench with almost 6 min. left in the game. It wouldn’t have made a difference and our starters were totally out of it by then but I understand if someone doesn’t like it.

Look all is not bleak, lost or crappy. This game was but overall we are walking away with a split and now can come home and try and take care of business here. It won’t be easy and a lot of things are going to have to happen for us to take care of business. But if there is one thing I’ve learned it is that Frank is a very capable coach and he will have the guys ready for Saturday night’s game.

Let’s do some grades and as you can imagine it’s not going to be pretty.

    Paul George: C-

No matter what this summer Paul has got to get with a good dribbling coach because the only thing that will hold Paul back from reaching that next level of stardom is his inability to split good defenders and get to the rack. He played respectable defense when it still mattered but his offense went from attacking to settling and when Paul settles he just isn’t that good. 9 three point attempts is just way to many when he only shot the ball 16 times. But I understand that often times this is because it is all we can get. It’s a combination of poor ball handling and well…no it’s mostly just poor ball handling by all of our wing/guard players.

    David West: F

Harsh? Yes, it’s meant to be. As I’ve said before I grade on expectations at times and in his case I expect a lot more leadership and a lot less finger wagging. If you can’t get up a shot do something else to help. The 6 rebounds were nice and all but there were at least 3 more I saw him leave hanging. I don’t expect lock down defense from him and asking him to guard Mello is just not a good idea and not even his fault for that, but he has to be willing to help rotate and for the love of God take a foul instead of allowing the layup line like he was doing.

    Roy Hibbert: B

I got no real beef with Roy other than he didn’t get to the foul line. Hard to do that I realize when you don’t get the ball but still he could have forced the issue maybe a little more. But then again, maybe not. Honestly I just had no real problem with him.

    George Hill: C

Not sure, I want to say I didn’t like the way he played but then I can’t think of a ton of times where he got burnt. I mean Felton just hit a couple of shots that he had no business hitting but he did so it’s hard to fault George there. He did miss a couple of bunnies at the rim but then he did have one hell of a block on a fast break. So I’ll just say meh to his game.

    Lance Stephenson: D

Lance should never EVER shoot 7 three point shots in a game, in particular when it is more than 50% of the shots he is taking. They actually did a pretty good job of keeping the ball out of Lance’s hands and it really hurt us. When we stagnated in the 3rd (wow is that ever an understatement) I really wish Lance would have had the ball in his hands trying to drive but it never worked out that way as N.Y. apparently shut down both our ability to post and our ability to drive all at the same time. So he, like his draft mate, decided that the best answer to all of lives questions was to shoot more three point shots.

    Bench: F

I’m not even going to bother breaking them down as individuals because even if the played a few min. of decent action individually as a group they were as successful as the Edsel.

Again all is not lost so I don’t need anyone coming on here telling me to “buck up”. Each game is its own game so momentum can just as easily swing either way in game 3.

Here let’s listen to the soothing sounds of Slade so as not to be too depressed.

Re: Odd Thought's: Round 2 Game 2 2013 NBA playoffs

Five games ago we got blown out by the Hawks, and afterward I posted that the drubbing invoked memories of the 1984 NBA Finals where in Game 3 the Celtics got absolutely spanked but then came back the next game and beat the Lakers and won the championship. This example as well as our experience with the Hawks shows that a loss is a loss when 2 good teams meet, and when they meet again, things can change dramatically. This is perhaps more due to adjustments than a player shifting from cold to hot, but the latter scenario is of course not unheard of. Still regardless, in a 7 game series, in the end, the best team usually wins.

One other point. Yes, being on the end of a blowout like this does not leave a good taste in one's mouth, but I believe that someone posted in another thread that only 4% of the time has the visiting team begun a series by winning the first two away playoff games. If valid then that's an incredible stat, and I feel better already going into Game 3.

BTW, I appreciated the MASH and Thor references.

Peck, u get a thanks for the obscure Thor/Marvel reference that only a few here on the board would understand.

Im not p****d that they lost the game...I was half expecting it. What I'm p*****d about is how they lost the game. Going scoreless for nearly 8 full minutes at a crucial part of the game is DOWNRIGHT EMBARRASSING for a 2nd round Playoff Team.

For a lot of this season, I've wondered how good our defense would be if our offense wasn't so bad. I feel like we'd be unequivocally historically great.

I cannot disagree with your grade for West. Here we are again bashing West after a horrible game, not knowing if he will step up huge again like he did the last two games of the Hawks series. The thing is, why are we being faced with this dilemma every two or three games? Why the huge swings in production?

It seems there are times when West drives down the lane and creates...something. But, when he receives a pass at the elbow and stands there, doing nothing, what's the point? Be a force!

West needs to do what it is he does, or we're done.

            this.

we must win next 2 games. if we lose the homecourt advantage i don't believe we can win the series. i don't think we are mentally tough enough to win a game 7 on the road.

Let me say this again (I said it somewhere in the Pacers-Hawks thread):

You are as good as your last game.

So I guess let's just move on from this devastating loss and regroup for game 3. After all, we now own the homecourt advantage. We just need to defend our home to increase our chances of advancing to the ECF.

Re: Odd Thought's: Round 2 Game 2 2013 NBA playoffs

Well.... what can I say, I thought we played pretty well until we were halfway into the third quarter. That's when we simply imploded. Our offense grinded to a halt and completely stopped executing even the easiest shots, while our turnover rate which was allready a big problem since the start of the game completely exploded off the charts. Add to that that the Knicks gained back their confidence and started making a lot of shots and seemed to gain some extra defensive intensity and you have a recipe for disaster. It was maddenning and frustrating watching the team play that part of the game.

I agree that not having ANY real serious option on the bench to try and experiment a bit without running the huge risk of getting a big dropoff when said player(s) come in is a HUGE problem for us. One we had hoped we had solved last summer, but it became obvious rather quick during this season that that was not the case and we would have a comparable problem with our bench like we had in last years playoffs, except this time around we will have to do without Danny, but with a greatly improved Paul and Lance.

I can only hope it's enough and D.J. gets enough motivation to play for a new contract somewhere, so he contributes from the bench as he did in game 1 and he sort of did tonight. He and Tyler are our best shots of getting anything from the bench on a regular basis.

Anyway, it's back to Indy with our main goal achieved, which was gaining homecourt advantage. We need to take care of business on our home floor, but it's going to be tough, which is why I hope our homecrowd will be as electrified as can be. I'm counting on our fellow fans to push our team forward to victory.

We'll have to deal with Amare there most likely. I'm not out on if that is a goodthing for us or not. Sure, he's a seeve defensively, but he's also likely to get more calls from the referees due to him still being a marquee player. We'll see.

I think the long period until the next game helps both teams. I think West and Hibbert on our side could really use a little breather and, offcourse Anthony, Smith, Kidd and Amare on the Knicks I'm sure will also relish the extra time to rest/get back into shape.

Not much else to say, I guess, except .

I figured we'd lose this one, but I was still really hoping the knicks wouldn't be able to bounce back.
It's going to be really tough beating them in both of the next 2 home games, because that would pretty much end the series, and they know that,
so I'm pretty sure NY will win either game 3 or 4, forcing us to win again at MSG,
and winning there again would be much much more difficult than it was in game 1.

I really hope our guys realize this and won't let NY get the upper hand in the series, we have to treat games 3&4 as if
they were game 7, because there's no doubt the Knicks would.

I liked the effort up to the last Knicks run in the 3rd quarter. Defense was good & minus the turnovers the offense was OK too. Honestly thought the Pacers were poised to close them out if they could just limit the turnovers. What followed was troublesome. I was also coming to the decision that the Pacers had finally shaken the simultaneous defensive lapses and offensive ineptitude that had plagued them in the last two weeks of the season. I was very wrong on both counts.

I still think the odds are good the Pacers win this series and getting to the next round would be great for the growth of the young core but having witnessed the mess that was tonight I have a hard time believing they can be anything more than a minor bump in the road for the Heat.

The thing that gives me the most confidence in the Pacers eventually closing out the series is how the game was called. I thought the officials did a good job with the verticality rule and not rewarding players for throwing themselves into the bigs once they got into the lane. If that continues eventually the Pacers size & toughness should wear down the Knicks.

This is sort of funny because I don't think we're mentally tough enough to win a game 7, anywhere.

Happy with the outcome of our trip to NY overall. I just hope we focus more on the sting of 30-2 run from a motivational standpoint than having accomplished the mission to get one of two on the road.

DgR is absolutely right. Yes, we've been a superior team at home, but holding serve at home against a desperate Knick team is much easier said than done. We have to be prepared to meet and surpass their intensity level. Last night we just couldn't do that.

Hopefully home cookin' will inspire somebody (anybody!) from the bench.
I'd rather die standing up than live on my knees.

I am making the trip to Indy for game 3 hopefully the team will show up as well!

Last night was bad but we put in a couple of those against Atlanta, Its just worse to put that up in New York.

                              Pacers was disengaged.

First half was lazy, sloppy and way to many jump shots.

I thought, well they will smack them in the teeth. Thinking, Pacers didn't use a lot of energy and wasn't in any foul trouble, yet was in the game.

Then the 3rd quarter came and it was more the same. Pacers never rose up.

                              Was just disengaged.
Garbage players get 1st round picks, (WTF)! All of the NBA must hate the Pacers! LOL
