Coming away 2-0 would have been outstanding, not mandatory but it would have made this series a lot easier. We never seem to like to take the easy way.
Look there will be no excuse making here tonight, we were just beat and beaten badly. The Knicks just executed their offense with impunity for the most part and well our offense is what our offense is. It’s workable on our best days and it is the Titanic when things go wrong and tonight we hit an iceberg but it was an iceberg of our own making.
Don’t get me wrong the Knicks upped the defensive pressure and we just did not respond, well that’s not true we responded but we responded very poorly. So full credit to them, they took us out of any semblance of an offensive game that we can work with and just encouraged us to be what we so desperately at times want to be, a jump shooting extravaganza. However our jump shooting is as accurate as 5 O’clock Charlie (it’s an old M.A.S.H. episode look it up)
Even our coach was off tonight and no it wasn’t just that bizarre time out he took, which his post game excuse just rang hallow btw. We desperately needed someone to set some solid picks & yet that is just not the way we play. It’s all post ups all the time and when it’s not that it’s around the horn until someone decides to take an ill fated three. He’s going to have to do what he did in the Atlanta series and change things up a bit on the offensive side.
I mean honest to God how do you let a team go on a 30-2 run? Is it a fault of the defense or the offense and the answer is yes. However I am going to depart from the standard issue response and say that in this case it was actually more a problem with the offense. You are not going to stop a team from scoring every time, although they did a pretty good job of stopping us every time. But at some point in time you have to put the ball in the basket and for more than a quart of the game we could not do that.
It’s not rocket science btw. All the Knicks were doing was hard doubling the post and playing the passing lanes and because we are at best questionable ball handlers and generally **** poor shooters this just was a recipe for the crap soufflĂ© that the Pacers served forth and called it offense.
Now one thing I will give poor Frank credit for is this. Is there another coach alive who has to make the decision to play his starters for 48 min. for fear that even 75 seconds from a backup won’t change the entire outcome of a game? I mean Sam Young sabotages the first quarter in game one but fortunately there was time to recover and tonight Jeff Pendergraph did everything in his power to earn a contract with the Knicks in his short time on the floor. There was no time to recover from this.
Don’t get me wrong Jeff didn’t directly cost us the game but in a way his inability and frankly the inability of any of our bench players to hold their own and allow the starters any form of a breather did take it’s toll because I think by the 4th quarter Roy was gassed.
The bench has had a few games from a few players who have actually been beneficial this season but overall I’m sorry but that bench is a giant disaster who once again is going to have to be upgraded as soon as this season is over, no matter when it ends (short of us winning a title).
But honestly while the bench was lousy (although once again D.J. played a few solid min.) our starters were nothing to shout about either.
Roy was acceptable to a point because he still played solid defense and tried to control the boards. His point total was low but again like I said they were hard doubling every single time we attempted to pass into the post so they just limited our ability to even get him a shot.
Other than that though every other starter had an issue. But my ire tonight is saved for none other than he who is often above question.
David West was both soft and lazy. How many times did we see him stand there not even making an effort to foul someone (I don’t mean touch foul I mean foul them so they didn’t get a layup). But the sequence that will haunt me is the time Roy stepped over and defended the driver and either got his hand on it or caused them to throw up some slop that was well off. Instead of picking up Roy’s man like he is supposed to and boxing out Chandler, West stood there firmly planted to the ground as if he were solely responsible for maintaining gravity on that particular part of the floor while Tyson grabbed the errant shot and rammed it through as though he were a Dwarven Blacksmith hammering uru metal trying to forge Mjolnir.
Then to top it off West turned around and shot an evil eye look to either Lance or Hill (they were both there I think) as if it was their responsibility to pick up Tyson Chandler even though West had interior position.
He also through a couple of “what the hell are you doing” passes that made me want to jump off of a building.
Needless to say I just wasn’t real happy with David tonight. I don’t blame him for his lack of offensive production because as I said they were hard doubling the post but he really didn’t do anything else to help us with this game either.
Did Frank throw in the towel a little early? Honestly he probably should have save us all the trouble and threw it in at the end of the 3rd quarter. But in seriousness I have no problem with people who are going to have a problem with him bringing in the deep bench with almost 6 min. left in the game. It wouldn’t have made a difference and our starters were totally out of it by then but I understand if someone doesn’t like it.
Look all is not bleak, lost or crappy. This game was but overall we are walking away with a split and now can come home and try and take care of business here. It won’t be easy and a lot of things are going to have to happen for us to take care of business. But if there is one thing I’ve learned it is that Frank is a very capable coach and he will have the guys ready for Saturday night’s game.
Let’s do some grades and as you can imagine it’s not going to be pretty.
Paul George: C-
No matter what this summer Paul has got to get with a good dribbling coach because the only thing that will hold Paul back from reaching that next level of stardom is his inability to split good defenders and get to the rack. He played respectable defense when it still mattered but his offense went from attacking to settling and when Paul settles he just isn’t that good. 9 three point attempts is just way to many when he only shot the ball 16 times. But I understand that often times this is because it is all we can get. It’s a combination of poor ball handling and well…no it’s mostly just poor ball handling by all of our wing/guard players.
David West: F
Harsh? Yes, it’s meant to be. As I’ve said before I grade on expectations at times and in his case I expect a lot more leadership and a lot less finger wagging. If you can’t get up a shot do something else to help. The 6 rebounds were nice and all but there were at least 3 more I saw him leave hanging. I don’t expect lock down defense from him and asking him to guard Mello is just not a good idea and not even his fault for that, but he has to be willing to help rotate and for the love of God take a foul instead of allowing the layup line like he was doing.
Roy Hibbert: B
I got no real beef with Roy other than he didn’t get to the foul line. Hard to do that I realize when you don’t get the ball but still he could have forced the issue maybe a little more. But then again, maybe not. Honestly I just had no real problem with him.
George Hill: C
Not sure, I want to say I didn’t like the way he played but then I can’t think of a ton of times where he got burnt. I mean Felton just hit a couple of shots that he had no business hitting but he did so it’s hard to fault George there. He did miss a couple of bunnies at the rim but then he did have one hell of a block on a fast break. So I’ll just say meh to his game.
Lance Stephenson: D
Lance should never EVER shoot 7 three point shots in a game, in particular when it is more than 50% of the shots he is taking. They actually did a pretty good job of keeping the ball out of Lance’s hands and it really hurt us. When we stagnated in the 3rd (wow is that ever an understatement) I really wish Lance would have had the ball in his hands trying to drive but it never worked out that way as N.Y. apparently shut down both our ability to post and our ability to drive all at the same time. So he, like his draft mate, decided that the best answer to all of lives questions was to shoot more three point shots.
Bench: F
I’m not even going to bother breaking them down as individuals because even if the played a few min. of decent action individually as a group they were as successful as the Edsel.
Again all is not lost so I don’t need anyone coming on here telling me to “buck up”. Each game is its own game so momentum can just as easily swing either way in game 3.
Here let’s listen to the soothing sounds of Slade so as not to be too depressed.
