Fever won their first preseason game today. Clarendon had 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, nice first game for the rookie.

Fever now in last place at 1-4 and 0-3 at home for the first time ever. A sobering reality of how decimated this team is right now.

Clarendon and Christmas both got dinged up tonight. If this keeps up, the Fever may want to consider pulling a 2012 Phoenix Mercury and just sit all the regulars for extended stretches. The time off would help them recoup for a strong season next year. Having a top 4 pick for the first time in nearly a decade wouln't hurt either.

Uh oh, another injury. Is there any kind of injury list in the WNBA or do injured players count against the 11 player roster?

=== Indiana's Davenport sidelined with fractured tibia ===

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Indiana Fever center Jessica Davenport
has been diagnosed with a stress fracture to her left tibia and will miss 6-
    to-8 weeks.

Davenport averaged 6.7 points and 3.4 rebounds in 34 games for the defending
    WNBA champion Fever last season.

The Ohio State product has averaged 6.6 points and 3.1 rebounds in 174 career
games (26 starts) for New York and Indiana.

Dang. There goes the Pacers front-court defense. Davenport is scrappy. She will be missed.

4 of the 5 analysts have the Fever returning to the Finals, though all four predict they won't repeat. Three of them have the Fever losing to Phoenix in the Finals and one has them falling to Minnesota.

If their listings of playoff teams are in chronological order, then they all expect the Fever to finish 1st in the East.

Looking forward to another good season. It's awesome that the Fever and Pacers are doing so well at the same time. We get winning basketball year-round.

It's getting tougher. Erin Phillips is out 4-6 weeks. We're down to 8 healthy players on the 11 woman roster.

The latest casualty is guard Erin Phillips, who has been diagnosed with a lateral meniscus tear in her right knee. The Fever announced today that she will miss at least four to six weeks.

Not shaping up to be a good chance for a repeat considering the injuries. It will be interesting to watch at the home opener next Friday.

In better news, the WNBA GM Survey came out today and the Fever got plenty of love. From Catch being voted as the best small AND power forward in the WNBA to Lin Dunn being voted the best coach, the Fever are represented well in all areas. Briann January was voted most underrated player and Stephanie White as best assistant coach. Of course, Catch leads many defensive categories and the leadership categories too.

But I think what surprised me the most was the question which asked which player you would sign if you were to start a franchise today. Britney Griner, at 22, seemed like a no-brainer, but Catch at almost 34 still tied her for the top spot. Goes to show how respected she is amongst her peers, coaches, and GMs.

Hmmm, apparently there IS a provision for replacing injured players on a WNBA roster.

After the first two regular-season games, the Fever has the option of seeking a roster exemption and picking up a 10th healthy player until Pohlen, Davenport or Phillips can return. However, when one of those veterans does come back, the replacement must be waived.
And Layshia Clarendon will miss the season opener tomorrow for her graduation ceremony.

Tamika Catchings is awesome. I know, I know - super obvious. But I can imagine how cool it would be to get personal basketball instruction from Tamika Catchings as a kid on your neighborhood court.

Thatcher Park basketball court named in honor of Tamika Catchings

    By Scott Agness
    May 28, 2013

It was all a big surprise – and quite the honor – to Tamika Catchings. The Indiana Fever forward and 2011 WNBA Finals MVP found out during a recent, non-related luncheon that there would be a basketball court named after her at Thatcher Park on Indy’s West side.

A group of eight individuals, which included Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, Catchings and Rick Fuson, the Pacers Foundation chair and COO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, broke ground on “Tamika Catchings Court” Tuesday morning.

“It’s not everyday that you can wake up and have an opportunity to have a court named after you,” Catchings said. “This is a huge honor.”

The Indianapolis Park Foundation announced at a news conference that the city of Indianapolis, Pacers Foundation and Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL) were teaming up to build or renovate outdoor basketball courts that kids play on every day. In the five-year initiative costing over $1.1 million – $625k combined from Pacers Foundation and IPL along with $500k from the city – parks throughout Marion County, beginning with Lentz, Olin, Parcel 15, and Thatcher, will receive a welcomed upgrade.

“The core purposes of this organization are winning championships and serving community, so we are pleased to invest in our parks, our community and our youth,” Fuson added.

Catchings has been a huge part of the local community since she was drafted by the Fever in 2002. Even with her commitment to the Fever and the Olympic team where she won three gold medals, she’s gracious with her time, heavily invested in the city as well as the founder of her own foundation, the Catch the Stars Foundation. Just last week, Catchings and her teammates, who won the WNBA title last season, served as Grand Marshal for the 500 Festival Parade, and she hosted her foundation’s scholar banquet. All with the season just getting underway.

“She does such a great job and everybody loves her so much,” Mayor Ballard said. “And the Fever have represented us so well over the last few years, we just can’t say enough about them.”

Catchings was blown away by the honor and she already has ideas of how to utilize the court named after her along with others in the county. She’d like to go around to the different parks and hold instructional sessions. Thatcher Park is less than 10 minutes from her home so it’s a great fit.

These improvements are part of an ongoing campaign within the Indy parks system. It is their hope that they can enhance every park, which in turn would benefit as many kids as possible. For Catchings, that’s where her professional goal formed and her ambition came out.

“Just thinking about my road and my journey of becoming a professional basketball player, it started on the courts outside, bouncing a basketball,” she said.

Had to be some type of injury. The team is so short-handed right now I can't imagine keeping her out for any other reason. I think I saw where she and Christmas both got hurt against Connecticut the other night.

Last October was a blast, but we're paying the price for having the shortest offseason.

Was still adjusting to our new seats so not a lot of details remain in my mind from last night's game. A few thoughts:

    - Fever had trouble closing off the lane. Atlanta got a number of easy layups with a clear path to the basket.
    - Fever shooting is hopefully just rusty. Way too many mid-range jumpers rolling off the rim or going partway down and back out.
    - For an injury-ridden lineup, the ladies on the floor looked pretty good. If they can hold on until the others get back this could be another great season.

I went to the game agains Atlanta. My first womans game. My cousin got us tickets in the Legends area. I had no clue what the Legends area was about. When i asked the bartender how much the Miller and Bud Light were and he said " free ". I nearly fainted. I might go again and maybe take a date or try to pick up a date in the Legends area * wink *

Might as well start limiting the regulars' minutes before eventually shutting them down. This is a lost season. I've never seen so many key players injured all at once.

We're 3 games back with 28 games left. For some reason, I don't see the Fever giving up on the season quite yet.

Plus, even if they did, we have only 8 healthy players. Who are the regulars? Realistically, just by how much can you cut their minutes, or even "shut them down," when you have three players on the bench? The minutes need to be filled somehow.

Very disappointed with the video quality of WNBA Live Access so far. No where near as good as the NBA League Pass quality. But maybe it's just me having trouble.

I gave up on LiveAccess when they started charging money for it. The replays after made baskets, weird camera angles and grainy images weren't worth the cost.

The Fever went into the game against the Liberty with only 3 players dressed on the bench. I had to do a double-take when I first noticed it. Don't think I had ever seen that before.

That said, they came out of the gates with typical Fever smothering defense. They kept the Liberty off the offensive glass and finished possessions like a true championship squad. A hot shooting streak, led by Catch, propelled them to a double-digit first quarter lead.

The second quarter was somewhat a different story. The offense sputtered out but they managed to hold strong defensively, especially in a critical moment with mostly bench players in the game, which bought Catch some much-needed rest. I don't know if it was the Fever defense or just the early start time, but Cappie was a non-factor. As strong as our defense was, it was also noticeable how uninterested Cappie was. She didn't make her usual aggressive drives to the rim or take advantage of the triple-threat and her ability to create separation for the jumper. I found it interesting that when Pearson's own teammate (Braxton) clobbered her across the face, she never even looked back or went to see if she was okay after Pearson spent like 5 minutes on the floor. When she finally got up, three Fever players came to see if she was okay, but no Liberty players. Just a weird thing to notice...

Love when Bri got in Cappie's in the third. She woke Cappie up, but it only resulted in Cappie taking some terrible shots and trying to beat us by herself. With so many people out and our offense struggling this early in the season, we need Bri to step up and be more aggressive. There's a scoring void that we need her to fill, because Catch can't carry us all game when she's working so hard on defense. Douglas not playing today only compounded the issue. Zellous could fill that void too.

But at the end of the day, it just feels like we gave this one away. We battled and we fought hard despite only 8 players, but we ran out of gas. Somehow, someway we've got to keep our heads above water until we get some players back.

    New player for the Fever.

WNBA Veteran Erin Thorn Signed as Fever Replacement Player

INDIANAPOLIS – Ten-year WNBA veteran Erin Thorn has been signed by the Indiana Fever as a replacement player, the team has announced. In addition to three Fever players sidelined prior to the season, All-Star guard Katie Douglas was unable to play in Wednesday’s game at New York, forcing Indiana to field a team with just eight healthy players.

A 3-point specialist who earlier played with New York, Chicago and Minnesota during her career, Thorn was waived in training camp earlier this season by the Phoenix Mercury, the team which Indiana hosts Saturday in a nationally televised game on ABC-TV (3:30 p.m.). She played the 2012 season with the Minnesota Lynx, the team Indiana beat in the WNBA Finals.

Thorn, 33, averages 4.8 points and 1.5 assists per game during a career which began in 2003. Her best season was a 2007 campaign with the Liberty in which she made 29 starts and averaged 9.7 points.

Douglas missed Wednesday’s contest and remains listed as day-to-day for Saturday’s game with the Mercury. Jessica Davenport (left tibia stress fracture), Erin Phillips (torn right meniscus) and Jeanette Pohlen (torn left ACL) all are expected to remain out of action until at least midseason.

WAY too early to think about this, but I just thought I'd throw it out there:

The massive amount of injuries will make it difficult for the Fever to contend this season. It really wouldn't surprise me if this team only wins about 16-18 games. This brings about an interesting scenario: what if, with 2 games remaining, we find ourselves out of the playoffs by one game? Should we force our worn-down players to try and extend their season, or just pull the regulars, miss the playoffs and put ourselves in the lottery? Yes, I realize the chances of landing the top pick wouldn't be great, but that just might be the chance to draft a potential replacement for Catchings. (not quite "Suck for Luck," but close)

Now that I've written that, the Fever will probably still win 20+, which would be great, obviously.

Interested in seeing how the ref cam works today. Kind of cool idea so long as it isn't over done.

I'm actually more interested in seeing if Phoenix has started to get their **** together. I did not expect them to have a Lakers like start.
