We have a new pope. I know this is religion and that is PD taboo, but anyone else interested in all this? Pretty historic moment.

    This is who they selected:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Francis

It looked like they selected another older person. He's 76. Benedict was 78 when he was selected in 2005. By contrast, John Paul II was only 58 when he took over in 1978.

I am surprised they went old again. However, he is the first Jesuit and South American pope so this is still a very big departure from tradition.

Looks like he was a compromise candidate. He finished second to Ratzinger in the last election. CNN talking heads seemed fairly shocked at his choosing the name Francis.

A new name is a pretty bold statement.

He is the first Jesuit and non-European pope though so that makes some sense.

Progress for the Catholic church, no doubt. Ratzinger always seemed like an uninspired choice.

Pretty much everything I know about the papal selection came from Eurotrip so I'm probably better off staying out of this.

I'm not Catholic, but I have my own personal faith. My beef has always been with organized religion, this seems like a breath of fresh air.

Bergoglio often rode the bus to work, cooked his own meals and regularly visited the slums that ring Argentina’s capital. He considers social outreach, rather than doctrinal battles, to be the essential business of the church.

He accused fellow church leaders of hypocrisy and forgetting that ***** Christ bathed lepers and ate with prostitutes.

“***** teaches us another way: Go out. Go out and share your testimony, go out and interact with your brothers, go out and share, go out and ask. Become the Word in body as well as spirit,” Bergoglio told Argentina’s priests last year.
    http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/03/...olic-church/2/

He's still very conservative on social issues, but atleast the attitude of inclusion is being brought back to the forefront.

One of the things I guess he did that caused a stir is he gave up his big, fairly lavish Cardinal residence and moved into a very small apartment. He seems to live and act his beliefs that doing is more important than talking which kind of harkens back to JP2

According to them he was involved in the kidnapping of some people, here is the info:

On 15 April 2005, a human rights lawyer filed a criminal complaint against Bergoglio, as superior in the Society of ***** of Argentina, accusing him of involvement in the kidnapping by the Navy in May 1976 (during the military dictatorship) of two Jesuit priests.[18] The priests, Orlando Yorio and Franz Jalics, were found alive five months later, drugged and semi-naked. Yorio accused Bergoglio of effectively handing them over to the death squads by declining to tell the regime that he endorsed their work. Jalics refused to discuss it after moving into seclusion in a German monastery
This is the wiki part but there is probably more info somewhere else.

He seems like an interesting guy, and makes sense as 40% of Catholics live in Latin America. As the interests of so many leaders move further and further away from the interests of the middle class and poor it is good to have a someone who appears willing to stick up for the average person. I didn't see that in Benedict XVI. I mean he may have had similar views but he was not hands-on.

Also I like that he's a Jesuit. I went to a Catholic HS, some guys became Jesuit priests and it is a very interesting part of the church.
    Already stoked for 2013-2014.

Jesuit priests are often involved in things where they are put in danger because that is what they believe the calling of their order is. To go to the more dangerous places for priests to be, they do a lot of work in China right now. It's tough for me to make a judgment for or against him based on the thing in 75.

One other thing, St. Francis is the patron saint of inter-religious dialogue. Which the dialogue between Christians, Jews, and Muslims and all world religions has arguably never been more important than in the coming years.

St. Francis was well known for going to the middle east expecting to become a martyr immediately as his sacrifice to God, but he actually lived many years there and was known for being a Christian man who was able to make many Muslim friends. This gives some insight in my opinion into the choice of the name Francis.

I think all we can say, with any certainty, is that Francis will almost certainly have to lighten up.

Behind all this feel good pomp and circus, this is a religion in where they keep the corpse of a priest dressed and adorned in a glass enclosure; where the Pope himself carries around the 1000 year old skull of a Saint adorned with jewels every year to honor the church he was murdered in; where they have entire cathedrals adorned wall to wall with skulls and bones, chandeliers made of skulls and bones. Where the heads of Saints are severed and placed in little ornate display cases and shipped around the world for the all Catholics to bow, kiss and "venerate".

Its all just a little much for me.

Raise your hand if you ever kissed the box of a severed head. I'd be interested to know why you did it

There was a time in our worlds history when a severed head was sent around the land as a demonstration of power and intimidation....
