Default What is your opinion of the "brony" culture?

In case you don't know what a brony is, it is a portmanteau of "bro" and "pony". Basically, it consists of fans of the cartoon show "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic" outside of its target demographic (~12 year old girls and their mothers). The subculture is mostly associated with males aged 18~34, though can include any age and any gender.

As someone who has a few friends who consider themselves bronies, I find it very weird. Most of these friends (not all) are socially awkward when talking about things outside of My Little Pony. Many bronies, though none that I personally know, also find it necessary to dress and act the part -- cosplaying as the characters from the show and acting like they do.

There are also a few (excuse my loaded terminology) messed up examples of adult individuals (mostly men) creating imaginary friends that are ponies and in some cases convincing themselves they are real. In what I hope is a small subset of these cases, people claim to fall in love with them. I'll leave the connotations involved with this out as to maintain a PG-13 rating.

What are your guys' thoughts on this?

If you really want my opinion, step 1 is you should stop being friends with these degenerates immediately. Step 2 is you need to punch yourself in the face for ever associating yourself with them in the first place.

I think anime and that kind of thing is quite dumb, but I would watch anime for a year before hanging out with these people for two hours. I think you need some new friends.

In all seriousness, it sounds like there is some underlying possibilities for pedophilia here.

I don't know; if anything it sounds like they want to BE a little girl, not **** one.

If it were them being drag queens instead of dressing up like ponies or whatnot, you wouldn't think of them possibly wanting to rape women, would you?

As for the original question, I've heard of it/the show but don't know much about it. I don't really care if they like the show or dress up.

The part that would concern me is anyone who has an imaginary friend that they truly believe is real.

You said pedophilia. You think pedos, what, just admire children from afar?

I think it's more likely these wackos would be sexually attracted to young boys.

Also it doesn't matter. Apparently these nuts are sexually attracted to fictional ****ing cartoon ponies.

They should be off the streets.

They dress like cartoon ponies from a show aimed at 6 year old girls? They are also apparently sexually attracted to these cartoon ponies aimed at 6 year old girls?

Does anything about this indicate normal heterosexuality in any kind of way?

    Clearly it's not typical heterosexuality.

However, this sounds like underpants gnome logic to me.

    1. Not typical heterosexuality
    2. ???
    3. Sexually attracted to young boys

Reminds me of what people used to say/think about anyone who was a gay male.

If in 20 years we are talking about Bronies rights being a major hot button issue, I'll agree with you. I'll also just put a bullet in my head, because that's not a world I want to live in.

Men having sex with men, and men having sex with fictional cartoon toy ponies made for 6 year old girls, are far from similar things, in my mind.

If they fall in love with their make believe ponies, it would seem like beastality would be more their bag. Maybe the typical brown/black/white/spotted horses don't do it for them. Gotta have the pink and the purple.

While I would not suggest that this will ever be 'a major hot button issue', in any case that's irrelevant to my point.

I'm seeing what appears to be a baseless leap in 'logic'.

For no apparent reason, you see these 'bronies' and you jump to, 'they're sexually attracted to young boys'. And that makes no sense based on what I'm seeing. And until or if that changes, IMO that's a really harsh and unfair thing to say about those folks, no matter how weird they are.

Men having sex with men, and men having sex with fictional cartoon toy ponies made for 6 year old girls, are far from similar things, in my mind.
Yes, for the most part, they are very different as far as I am aware.

However, again, that's not the point. The reason for the comparison is that in either case I'm seeing a heterosexual make a seemingly baseless connection between an atypical sexuality (in one case, gay men, in this case, 'bronies') and pedophilia. Thus far, I don't see any logic in that.

So until or if I see anything that connects being a 'bronie' with being a pedophile, I think that's a pretty nasty thing to be saying about them if it's not true. And thus far I've seen nothing to suggest it is true.

At best I wouldn't be shocked if at some point there will be documentation of someone who is both a 'bronie' and a pedophile, but then again I can do that with heterosexual males as well (the ones who molest young girls), and that doesn't make the rest of the heterosexual males pedophiles, either.

I don't know; I just think that's a really nasty word to toss out there in regards to any group unless there is proof to back it up.

Yeah, now that you mention it, it seems like almost a specific sub-group of furries. Well, at least the ones who get turned on by it. Some of these guys just seem to dig a girly show but don't get a boner from it.
