I also used to have ESPN as a go to channel. If not for the occasional sports news in the AM (which my coworkers like and turn on, I just dont object), I rarely if ever watch it

Though I admit I soured quickly after the brawl

    WHAT?!?!

You missed where people started turning this off topic discussing Fox news and CNN.
They were comparing Fox News taking on CNN to Fox Sports Network taking on ESPN. It was all in context.

    Shouldn't be too difficult.

Talk about something outside LeBron, Tiger, ect. and you have more depth than ESPN.
But they won't. They will talk about the same damn things. You know why? Because those are the topics that get ratings.

Probably some morning show where he talks about how awesome Notre Dame is for 2 hours.

I look for this network to be as fair and balanced as the Bleacher Report (ironically the new supplier of content to CNN.com).

Sensationalism sells, but I think quality sells, or would sell too. It's just much easier to be sensational.

Let's hope they make an effort to produce quality.

    Hopefully - they'll be different.

We don't want another ESPN. We want something different.

NBC sports looks like they are gonna be a major player. They outbid Fox and others for the English Premier League next season and they also are the new home for Formula 1.

Bein sports is an interesting new sports channel. They are showing a lot of spanish, italian soccer and some other niche sports. It's owned by Al Jazeera so they have a lot of money they will be able to throw around as other opportunities present themselves.

ESPN has some major competition now.

They are suppose to put on the UFC shows that are on fuel. Fuel costs 10 dollars a month on brighthouse. I hope this new channel is free, but brighthouse will find a reason to charge for it.

Despite the disgrace that is their "news" channel. Fox has done a decent job with everything else. I look forward to seeing them compete against ESPN.

If the meteoric rise of FOX amongst the big four networks and the dominance of FOX News in the cable news race is anything to go by, FOX has some incredibly bright people working behind the scenes, which makes me believe they could pose a legitimate threat to ESPN in the future.

Personally, I never believed NBC's new sports network would amount to anything, because, well... it's NBC, and everything they do is a failure. But FOX? FOX is brilliant. They're the one network I could see succeeding against ESPN, and I hope they do, as ESPN has become incredibly stagnant.
Have to disagree a bit here. I don't doubt Fox will be super popular, especially if they can localize their programming with local games. But you're also predicting they'll have better programming, which I'm not so sure about. In my opinion, Fox has the worst NFL coverage of all the networks with football (see: stupid dancing robot). NBC Sunday Night is by far the best, and probably the best produced sports program on TV right now.

I'm not saying Fox Sports won't be popular, but I really doubt they're gonna blow away ESPN in quality.

Competition always promotes progress. Whether they surpass ESPN or just make them have to adjust the way they do business this is a good thing.

Ah, yes. The classic, "I don't like them, therefore, they suck" argument.

TV Network Rankings 2011-2012 Season: Fox On Top But Down, NBC 3rd, CW Falls

FOX rose up the ranks from a nobody network 20-something years ago, and is now arguably the most successful network on television. FOX News stepped into a world that had been dominated by CNN for nearly two decades and is now completely dominating all competitors.

You may not like them, and you may believe that only those who agree with your political views deserve a voice. What you cannot do is reasonably deny that both networks have been remarkably successful in becoming major players in the television world.
This is why the guy said in before the lock. Fox news is fake news for people to lazy to think for themselves. If you don't defend it here, I won't insult the republican base here. This is why we don't discuss politics on this board, Its to combustible.

Expecting Fox to be "about the sports" is laughable. They got to the top of the News broadcasting world by being even more sensational than the existing entities. When fighting fire with fire proved to work in that arena, why change the strategy?

BTW, NBC sports broadcasts most IndyCar races and does a great job, much better than the ABC broadcasts!

I really wish this thread could be about how Fox can fit in and/or compete with espn and not a bashing and/or defending of fox news.

The fact of the matter is that we can all agree that for better or worse Fox has done an excellent job of driving up ratings since its inception and could provide a great yang to espn's ying.

    /end rant

Liberals hate FOX News solely because the network has given Republicans a platform. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar. Don't be a liar, spazz. You're better than that.

There's a reason the people who whine over the bias of FOX News never mention the bias of MSNBC, ABC News, or CBS News. It's not the bias, itself, that causes the emotional outbursts, but the slant of the bias. Being bias towards the left is not only acceptable, it's demanded, whereas, being bias towards the right is considered an unforgivable crime.

P.S., your attacks against FOX News are so incredibly generic as to be cliche. Perhaps it's time you started thinking for yourself, rather than regurgitating the tired cliches you've been spoon-fed like a helpless baby.
I'm an independent moderate. I can't stand FOX New's BS. Or MSNBC's BS. And most of the media is left-leaning, which IMO is not a great thing at all, either. I'm sure a lot of liberals do hate FOX News because it promotes the Republican platform, but it's also because of a lot of crap they shovel, too. This isn't the thread or the board to dive deep into this, but I felt compelled to speak up at least once because of the absolutist/black-white/us-vs-them attitude of this post.

That having been said, to be on topic I don't feel like the local FOX Sports network seems to be bad at all, so if the national version keeps up the solid work, I think they will be a good addition to cable packages and hopefully force ESPN to try harder.

Am I the only person who doesn't hate ESPN? I mean they aren't perfect, but some of you guys act like it's just a complete farce at this point. Admittedly, they have lost a lot of talent over the past two years, but they still have a lot of good stuff. Grantland, in particular, is excellent.
I have espn on in the background more often than not. with that said, when i do sit and watch. i find myself *****ing and moaning about everything they say and do. Hell, the bulls vs pacer game the other night had me pulling out my hair and my wife leaving the room.
If games are won and lost on a calculator and piece of paper, then why do we bother to play them?

This can be good for small markets imo if FOX decides to cater to them more than ESPN does. It will get us coverage from FOX and then when ESPN loses a chunk of their viewers they might have to step up and cover them as well.

ESPN has become very childish over the years and has been reduced to people trying to yell over one another (i.e. First take and the NFL crew (Keyshon, CC, Ditka, etc...)). They need to get back to the good days and I think the more competition that arises, the better. I don't even watch espn any more, I used to watch Mike and Mike, but now I watch Dan Patrick. The only time I am viewing ESPN is their website.
