    Default Sloan Sports Analytics Conference

The Sloan Sports Analytics Conference ( http://www.sloansportsconference.com ) just happened recently. Here are a few links that do a decent job summarizing some of the insights:

    http://deadspin.com/sloan-sports-analytics-conference
    - Lots of good info here. Relevant to the Pacers, they mention that Hibbert is an (interior) defensive stud. I know that a lot of us on this board have been saying this for a while now, but it's nice to know that there is data to back that up now

    http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=9016619
    - Zach Lowe and Bill Simmons talk about the conference, and how the Pacers starting 5-man unit is the most effecient in the league.

Here's a link to grantland, with a bunch of videos. There's a really good 20 minute interview with Daryl Morey, the Rockets GM, along with other good stuff.

Thanks for posting, Morey really is a great GM I love the way he thinks and attacks deals.

This thread really deserves more love. It's really quite fascinating stuff, and is the future of basketball. Coaches like Doug Collins and Lionel Hollins who refuse this stuff, are going to become a way of the past.

Good thing for Lionel he has the biggest counterweight in his front office.

Am I the only one not surprised by the offensive rebounding data?? I have always preached crashing the boards in the NBA. Far to many guards leak out and many players dont box out so getting offensive rebounds seems like a lot higher rate than in European ball or in college.

Listening to the Westbrook Brook Lopez story was really cool and the basketball IQ test looks pretty awesome aswell. I look forward to reading that guys book. I will be getting that app when it launches also .

I agree it deserves more love. I doubt it's the future future like Ben Alamar said in that interview it is a combo of both. I go off tape over analytics as a tie breaker or if it is close. The icing on the cake is when the analytics backs up the tape and the scouts, that is when it is most useful IMO.

I figured if I were the GM I'd want to have four types of player analysis: Traditional tape/film scouting, statistics (classic and progressive), physical health, and mental/personality/chemistry/off-court analysis/profiling. Make sure you and your staff(s) do their jobs in each one, then see which players look the best in the most categories (ideally in all four, of course) to determine your favorite players/prospects.
