Default Interesting bit from ESPN... Hansbrough a top notch post-defender??

Just saw this on ESPN today and thought it was interesting...

In his illustrious college career at North Carolina, Tyler Hansbrough became the school's all-time scoring leader. And while that hasn't translated very well to the NBA, the Pacers backup power forward is starting to show big improvement on the defensive end.

Synergy Sports Technology shows that Hansbrough is among the very best post up defenders in the NBA this season, allowing just 0.453 points per play. That ranks in the 98th percentile league-wide, and is light years ahead of where Hansbrough was at in previous seasons. Last year, he allow 0.902 PPP when defending the post (32nd percentile) and the year before he was at 0.97 (29th percentile).

Under Frank Vogel, the Pacers lead the league in defensive efficiency and have a number of players (David West, George Hill) committed to that side of the court. What the numbers above indicate is that Hansbrough is one of them.

Anyone else surprised? I mean, I have definitely seen improvement in his defense this year, but I had no idea it was so much better.

I think those defensive stats are worthless.

Tyler has always been a pretty good one-on-one defender. He moves very well laterally, he is extremely strong, aggressive and does a nice job. He's gotten better in team defense, but his pick and roll coverahge still isn't what it should be. His pick and roll technique is usually not very good

I wonder how much Ian vs Lou affects Tyler stats.

I think if you've been watching the games, you'll have notice that Tyler has been a good defender. I didn't think that good, but no one ever abuses Tyler. He also does an amazing job of just pissing people off. Then again, I've been ridiculed for defending his D in the past, so I'm sure some people haven't noticed....

The wide legs move that he does which is similar to Jeff Foster (I assume he learned it from him) has been very effective to give him a base that's hard to move.

I've always felt Hansbrough to be a pretty damned effective post defender, he's physical and a fighter and strong. He might not be skying for blocks, but I do think he makes it hard for similarly-sized post guys to score on him. I don't have stats to back it up, this is just based on watching him. I rarely yell at the screen at him, so that's a good thing. I do that more with Lance and Gerald Green, who both have lapses in team defense.
There are two types of quarterbacks in the league: Those whom over time, the league figures out ... and those who figure out the league.

Just a reflection of how good the Pacers are as a defensive squad. IMHO.

Synergy says he's allowed .45 points per possession on 53 post up plays.

Last year he allowed .91 ppp on 95 post up plays.

The year before that he allowed .95 ppp on 110 post up plays.

So that includes points from free throws right? Because he's cut his foul rate a decent amount this year.

Yes, it includes everything. Turnovers, fouls, etc.

That's certainly improvement, but one should also consider that he's playing against second-unit post players. Maybe they're just shooting as poor a % as Roy?

Greg Monroe posted him up 4 times and didn't score. We're comparing him to his previous seasons anyway.

I always thought he was pretty good in one and one situations, and I love his blitzing of pick and rolls.

Do you need to pay for it to check out previous season stats?

I'm not sure. It's showing me 4 years. I can look some stuff up if you want.

Just another exercise to show that stats can be made to prove anything?

If teams only watch Tyler play the Heat then we might get more for him. He seems extra-caffeinated vs. Miami, and it strangely works out in a good way for us. I've never noticed much defense though, even in those games.
The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!)

This year there are shooting fouls on 3.8% of his post up defense plays and TO on 13.2%

    Last year was 11.6% SF% and 6.3% TO%

The year before 13.6% and 7.3%

So it looks like Heisenberg's point has some merit.

I've always thought Tyler gets a bum rap around here, probably due to last year. I think he is our 2nd best player (and oftentimes 1st) off the bench this year. I understand that money-wise he probably won't work out here, but I'd love to keep him if possible. I think he is a big part of our smash-mouth identity.

Thanks for the stats, cgg. Tyler has been an improved defender this season. It's great to see

I am surprised at this. I do know Frank always has good things to say about Tyler. Always thought that was just Frank-speak. But maybe there is something to it. Boy I hope so, it would be nice to have, continue to have, good play from another guy.

Just from watching him play it's apparent that he's much better this year at denying his man position. He does a good job of forcing his man away from the baseline and towards the paint. He's not falling for pump fakes like in years past too.

These numbers don't lie because Tyler also passes the eye test.

Larry is not coming back, he didn't have a meeting with Orlando for not reason, yeah he is coming back to the NBA but not to the Pacers, the notion that he is a taking a year off and then come back is absurd.
