I cannot believe that some would chose to start another player over Reggie Miller. Friends, he is one of the 50 greatest players of all time. He is a member of the Hall of Fame, and most importantly, he had the ability to take over a game.

If we were ranking Pacers, my roster would be different. However, I am selecting the best team. The players selected reflect their best season as a Pacer, and were chosen from rosters from 1984 to 2013. My roster is as follows:

    Starting...
    PG - Mark Jackson
    SG - Reggie Miller
    SF - Ron Artest
    PF - Jermaine O'Neal
    C - Dale Davis

    ...Bench
    1. Rik Smits (C)
    2. Paul George (G/F)
    3. Danny Granger (SF/F)
    4. Antonio Davis (F/C)
    5. Jalen Rose (PG/G)

    Reserves...
    1. David West
    2. Roy Hibbert
    3. George Hill

    ...Paid but not active
    1. Jamaal Tinsley
    2. Jonathan Bender

I don't understand why a lot of you don't have Reggie starting. Reggie is the best clutch shooter in NBA history and is a GREAT scorer. I understand defense is a priority, but that's why I have Smits at center. 7'4 shot blocker and can dominate a game. And the Davis boys coming off the bench bring energy and toughness like what Tyler and Lou did last year for the Pacers

Rick Mount was a fine college player but his pro career, especially as a Pacer, was pretty much worthless (40% shooter in 2 seasons).

If you want a Boiler on there, pick the far superior ABA player, Billy Keller. And Mel never played PF a second of his life.

PG Mark, SG Reggie, SF Roger, PF George, C Mel

bench: Rik, Dale Davis, Billy Knight, Chuck Person, Freddie Lewis, Jermaine, Bob Netolicky, Billy Keller, Derrick McKey

soon to be added: Paul George
    forgot Travis Best as well

Reggie was a great shooter for us, and was certainly clutch. I don't know if I'd say he was the most clutch of all times though.

As for Smits, he was never a great defensive nor a feared shot blocker. He took up a lot of space, but had the terrible habit of trying to block shots at the hand rather than a foot off the hand following the release. Needless to say, Smits accumulated fouls, I am guessing at a faster rate than any starting Pacers front court player throughout their history. But Rik's presence in the lane did nothing to cover up Reggie's poor defense ( before Reggie actually grew to be a better-than-average defender under Brown). In any stretch, you are giving defensive credit to Smits that should be reserved for Dale, Antonio and McKey.

But Reggie should still be a starter on any list of best Pacers players that include his era.

This is my take, I can only pick players I have seen. heres my 12-man roster

PG: Mark Jackson - Loyal, stable backcourt partner with Reggie. Great floor general, and I loved seeing him post up opposing guards
SG: Reggie Miller - This is obvious to me
SF: Jalen Rose - Toughest one for me. I justify taking Rose here because we will run our primary offense through Reggie playing offball. Rose is a terrific secondary ballhandler and passer so fits in that role. Also good 2nd offensive option. Not to mention we reached the finals when he emerged.
PF: Dale Davis - consistent hustle guy
C: Jermaine O'Neal - Absolute defensive stud. His offense will be good here as the 3rd option behind Reg&Rose

    Bench:

G: Travis Best - Tough decision between him and Hill. Best tends to overdribble and play hero ball but I love his energy and hustle. Good spark off the bench if he has a defined role
G/F: Ron Artest - He might alternate with Rose in the starting lineup depending on matchups
G/F: Paul George - Young stud with amazing potential - Him and Artest on the wings is a nightmare for any matchup
F: Danny Granger - Our wings are getting jammed but I cannot leave Granger behind. Appreciation for being the sole bright spot in dark times. But also good offensive weapon and Jalen can play some point guard too so there might be room
F: David West - Mature, veteran leader
F/C: Antonio Davis - One of the Davis brothers should almost always be kept on the court to do the dirty work.
C: Rik Smits, well I cant just leave my countryman behind!

I have watched NBA basketball for 50 years. I have always thought that Jerry West was the best clutch shooter I ever saw.... ...

You don't even have PG listed as a reserve.

“People talk about how quiet he [McKey] is, but he’s really been helpful. He gives a lot of insight to players in how to guard certain teams and what their weaknesses are. The whole team listens to him, and it makes my job a lot easier. Having players like him is what pro basketball is all about for me.” —Larry Brown

    Why?

I'm totally on board with 'he's ONE OF THE most clutch shooters ever", but why THE most clutch shooter ever?

Rifleman? I wouldn't take him over Jerry West. But he's up there pretty high.

Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?

I'm fond of watching old Person clips, but I was talking about this 45 (I stole the nickname from Jim Rome - that's what he always calls him. Silly, I know, but I think it's kinda clever):
