I don't see how Artest beats out a young, brash, cocky "Hollywood" Miller for that team. Minus the bipolar, Reggie still did it all better. Sure, Artest threw Jordan to the floor in a pickup game and broke Michael's ribs, but Reggie actually got under Michael's skin.
I guess I was thinking of physical rather than mental damage. Which would give an honorable mention to shorttime ABA center Reggie Harding, who famously carried loaded weapons, threatened teammates (poor "tweety bird" Jim Rayl in the Loose Balls story), eventually lost his job threatening his GM, and then even lost his life living the same way.

The all-time trash-talking /getting into your head team features Chuck and Reggie, obviously, but I may need help on filling out the other spots. "Super John" Williamson used to lay down the smack, but I'm drawing a bit of a blank otherwise.

Here's another version, not an all-time best team at all. But rather my personal all-time favorite guys to cheer for, support/ based loosely on jerseys that I own: (Due to my age, this eliminates the ABA guys).

    PG - Fleming, Hill
SG - Miller (duh), Knight, Mullin
SF - Person, Rose, Kenny Willliams
    PF - West, Tisdale
    C - Stipo, Hibbert

    IR/ preseason roster - Bailey

Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

For a trash-talking team, I think the following would work:

    PG - vacant
    SG - Miller
    SF - Person
    PF - vacant
    C - vacant

I'd take that lineup vs. anybody else's. BRING IT ON.

I bet the Pacers sold quite a few Bailey jerseys. Every once in a while you'll still see one.

Oh they sold a lot of them. And for a second-round choice, it made sense for everybody.

In his healthy pre-season, he played well when he was on the court. But so did Hoiberg. In fact, they both outplayed Travis during the preseason. Had they not drafted both of those guards, Bailey would have made that team.

But his knees were shot, he wouldn't have lasted long. And due to the knees he probably was only good during the games and probably wasn't worth much as a practice-only guy which I'm sure was what Brown was looking for in his 12th mand. He probably could've given you 10-14 mpg on game days and back-to-backs would've been tough. And the thing about him was - some NBA bench players just take up time and space. He would (and could) make plays if his run was short enough but he couldn't stay on the floor for long.

Damon isn't on the official Pacers all-time roster because he never played a regular season minute, but you can find him in the 1994-95 team photo in BLF.

Joey Hassett ABSOLUTELY is the starting SG. Even over Reggie. The original 3-point gunner when those didn't exist.

I also think Granger gets the nod over Rifleman just because of the volume of three's that players take now.

Reggie and Chuck combined to average about 5 3FGAs per game, and that's with two of the top-20 alltime three point shooters. Now, it is considered good dispipline for a team to limit itself to a dozen attempts per game. Chuck's 7-10 game in the '91 playoffs was because the "heat check?" shot said, "YES YES YES!!". Not because he was always jacking up 10 3FGAs per game.

I would not be surprised if Damon holds the record for most NBA jerseys sold for a player who never played a regular season game.

In fact, I'd be shocked if he DIDN'T hold that record.

Larry is not coming back, he didn't have a meeting with Orlando for not reason, yeah he is coming back to the NBA but not to the Pacers, the notion that he is a taking a year off and then come back is absurd.

I wonder if the Celtics sold a lot of Len Bias jerseys.

Award winners? How about Danny Roundfield. 2nd team all NBA one year.

I remember Joey, but was surprised to see that he played even 15 min per game in his year with the Pacers. It seemed to me like he only went in there when we wanted a 3.

This little factoid is amazing: In 1981-82 while playing for Golden State, Joe Hassett led the entire NBA in 3 point attempts, while playing just 11.6 minutes per game (Don Buse made more, though, leading the league, and in hindsight should be on my list as a PG).

Perspective: Larry Bird, playing 38 minutes a game, took 53 three pointers that year. Hassett, playing 11.6 minutes per game, took 214. Holy Jim O'Brien, batman, ice that man's arm down.

As far as I can tell, the only Bias Celt jerseys out there are knockoffs or ones that were made 20 years later.

In 94/95, the only Pacer jersey you saw more often around town than Damon was Reggie.

Ricky Sobers, Johnny Davis, Vern Fleming. There are a bunch of guards in the same "good but not great" category. The teams they played on weren't very good so it's kind of hard to classify them.
The Ricky Sobers - Johnny Davis backcourt is one of my all time favorite combinations. Damn if we only had money back then we would have been able to keep Sobers. Micky Johnson was a decent player but we didn't keep him either (money again).

My brother-in-law took me to a game that Mickey Johnson played in. Against the Lakers, I think. He was having a horrible night but just kept throwing the ball up. As he came down the court a fan stood up and yelled "Mickey! Mickey! Mickey!". He finally looked over at the fan and the fan waved his arms from side to side and yelled "Don't shoot!". We all laughed.

They were, but I still had a great time rooting for them. I don't understand the fans that aren't happy unless we're winning a championship.

That's true. And that's part of why I took the Jim O'Brien years off, so I could get back to just enjoying the team. I don't care about the salary cap any more. I'm not watching the rest of the league wondering who we could acquire that would make our team better. I'm just enjoying watching Hill mature, George growing up, West's toughness, and watching to see whenever Hibbert clicks and gets back to the player we know he can be. Looking forward to Danny's return.

I had reached the point where it wasn't fun any more - it was a job. I don't know if the constant 24/7 sports fan environment contributed or not. I love the PD community but at the same time this constant barrage can push us too far individually. I'm not running the team. And I've rediscovered that I enjoy it more if I'm not second-guessing everything.

    Ah, thank you sensei.

I also took off some of the JOB years. It either had to be that, or I was going to have to significantly expand my drinking beyond wine and Belgian-style beers.

And due to a lot of the demeanor on the forum, I'm currently attempting to decide whether to take a hiatus from PD (but not the Pacers themselves).

What I like about your post is your smarts in the very trivial solution. Just simplify the breadth of your Pacers experience and one is likely to be much happier if one can avoid suffering from a little anxiety. Hats off to you.

I'd start Dale Davis at center and Jermaine O'Neal at power forward. Rik Smits and Jermaine O'Neal could not co-exist. However, Dale Davis and Jermaine O'Neal would not only play well together, but, would be one of the greatest defensive tandems of all time.

I'll try this using only guys who played for us from 97-98 on.

    Mark Jackson/George Hill
    Reggie Miller/Jalen Rose
    Paul George/Danny Granger
    David West/Dale Davis
    Jermaine O'Neal/Rik Smits

I'll only use guys I've seen (late 90's) and I always have had a huge sway towards the defense.

PG - Mark Jackson (have we had a steller defensive player at this position since MJ?)
SG - Paul George (yes, some forgotten that he can still play sg)
SF - Ron Artest (best defensive player I've seen)
PF - Jermaine Oneal (I never really liked him that much, but he could defend and score in the half court pre-injury)
    C - Dale M***** F***** Davis

Bench - Derick McKey, Roy Hibbert, George Hill, Miller, Antonia Davis, and for the s***s 'n' giggles players - Lance Stephenson, Sam Perkins.
Honorable mention. Danny, Mullins, Tim Hardaway, Psycho T, Orien Green.
PG24: "Don't tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon!"

RT @Hoya2aPacer "When I play this game I love. I play to make my teammates better. But I'm a mouther****er on defense."
