    Bleacher Report:
Jared Wade: The Truth Behind NBA Chemistry - Who Has It?

We talk about chemistry in the NBA all the time, but it's hard to say what it actually
means. The off-court variety is almost impossible to define. You can be in a locker room
and sense it, at times, but to actually come up with a written description of what ideal
    chemistry should be is pointless.

On the court, however, we can at least come closer to figuring out which players excel
when paired together. And the results often don't follow the narrative we hear from the
    media.

For example, Russell Westbrook's recent on-court outburst had many pundits questioning
whether there is something rotten within the Oklahoma City Thunder's dynamic duo.

Going back even further, many like to say that Westbrook takes too many shots late in
games and that this will be the fatal flaw that prevents this team from winning a title.

But if you look at the way that Westbrook and Durant play together, everything seems
    fine.

Looking at the league's five-man units, in terms of plus/minus (per 48 minutes) so far
this season, the largest trend of the lineup data stands out: The league's better teams
are the ones with the better lineups.

This is intuitive, but it is interesting that the Orlando Magic are the only team below .500
that has proven capable of producing more than plus-5.0 points per 48 minutes.

As a baseline, all the lineups in the NBA that have played at least 200 minutes together
are listed, even those that haven't performed well. There should be little surprise that
the Miami Heat are very good, but it is impressive that they have the top two lineups in
    the entire league.

The Thunder, too, have a pair of the best, although it is interesting that the team's big
lineup, with both Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins, has fared so well this season.
During the NBA Finals last year, many people thought that the team should have played
smaller rather than rely so much on the traditional center/power forward combination.

With basketball being a five-man sport, it's easy to analyze the five-player units and
leave it at that, but if we look at smaller four- and three-man groupings, we can more
specifically analyze what player pairings are most responsible for their teams' success.

Miami's dominance in the four-man units is almost comical. There are many things that
can be interpreted from such data, but the most obvious is that LeBron James is an
unbelievably good basketball player. The four best four-man lineups in the NBA all
    include him.

If you needed any additional evidence other than the game tape to prove that he
deserves another MVP trophy, there you go.

Another interesting wrinkle: The Eastern Conference dominates these rankings, holding
    down the top nine spots.

Almost as impressive as the Heat are the Indiana Pacers, which show how far a team
built around a strong starting lineup can go. It really doesn't seem to matter what
combination of George Hill, Lance Stephenson, Paul George, David West and Roy
Hibbert the team puts on the floor; as long as four of them are involved, the team
    thrives.

This may speak to the importance of continuity.

Obviously, the emergence of Stephenson, who appears in the top four Indiana lineups,
is a change from last season, but the Pacers' starting lineup was the best in the NBA
    last year
in terms of net rating (points scored per 100 possessions minus points allowed
    per 100).

Generally, NBA fans clamor...CONTINUE READING AT BLEACHER REPORT

What quarter deserves the most attention when trying to draw a link between NetRtg
(points scored per 100 possessions minus points allowed per 100 possessions) and
dwinning? What does it take to be number one?

You know that thing about how the dream of the ‘90s is alive in Portland? Like how
regardless of how the world has gone on having to deal with the intervening years that
Portland is stuck in a decade defined by flannel, body piercing, Doc Martens, and non-
conformity, sort of how Haight-Ashbury or Telegraph Ave are stuck in the ‘60s? Paul
George is sort of like that, except he’s the dream of the basketball video game.

When the NBA 2K series introduced the My Player mode in NBA 2K11, it promised that
you could build your player however you wanted: Do you want a guy who’s the same
height as you but a great ball handler? How about a bruising 7’0” center? Yeah, I didn’t
want those things either: What I wanted was a 6’10” wing who could dunk. Oh and hit
threes. Oh and make him quick, too. And if he could throw a sweet pass or two, that
wouldn’t hurt. Guess what? That’s Paul George.

But, like many My Players, he couldn’t put it all together at first. It’s one thing to
dominate in a video game where the player you control has the gift of your
consciousness while the rest of the players on the court are just pixels. You can leak
out at just the right times on offense and your stroke from three-point range is more
or less perfectible. It’s quite another thing to pull it off in real life. But this season,
George has stepped everything up, especially his defense, as shown by a defensive
rating that’sdropped from 104 to 100 to 97 in his first three years in the league.

You want more stats? Call up a list of players who have averaged at least 17 ppg, 7
rpg, and 3.5 apg while shooting better than 38% from 3-pt range and it’s chock full
ofseasons by players like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Larry Bird—and Paul George
    this season.

But enough numbers. How about...CONTINUE READING AT HARDWOOD PAROXYSM

I just want a Pacers win. Don't care how well they play, just win and get a few days off and get mentally ready for the rest of the regular season and playoffs.

Well if we can't beat the Bobcats despite playing without Danny or even West, then I would seriously suspect there is something wrong lately with the team. God forbid, if we lose, that would be the 3rd straight home defeat at home. Socking and sickening.

The BleacherReport piece is actually very interesting. It's great seeing Lance in all of our great units. Especially, the two-man ones

The 2 man units are mostly within the 5 man units. He plays the least minutes with the bench I think. Maybe besides Hibbert, but PG, GH, and DW all spend time with the bench players.

Well, I've got some appointments and things to do this evening, so I won't be watching live.

The game will be starting at about 1AM PST on my DVR, and I'll do my best to avoid social media until then.

All I can say is this. The last 2 games have been frustrating and disappointing, but we can wipe that taste out of our mouths with a win tonight.

Let's get back to 11 over .500 and get ready for a PACERS-Heavy All-Star weekend!!!

@1070Bruno: West (eye), Granger (ill) both inactive tonight. Vogel changed his mind about PF and will start Hansbrough instead of Pendergraph.

Ok, Paul George. Time to redeem yourself with a big game

Not sure if you're not watching the game or you have an agenda.
