Wow... Tuned into the KY Nascar race that was rain delayed from last night and the crowd is dismal. I didn't figure a rain delay to Sunday would hurt the crowd that bad...? Or was Saturday night not going to be all that good in the first place?

Who let TGBB fill in for Barfield in Race Control this weekend? The Great One is already changing rules on the fly!

I'm sorry but if that's all it takes for the standing start to be aborted then there simply should never be a standing start in Indycar. It's embarrassing to see the standing start hyped to the degree it was and then see it called off that easily...

Not sure about that penalty on Franchitti either. Not on the last lap especially....

Maybe this is what you get when TGBB returns to RC.

I hope TGBB's temporary return to RC wasn't some kind of signal of things to come AND I hope his temporary return to RC showed everyone in the paddock and the Hulman-George family why he doesn't need to return to RC in any capacity... ever...
In fact IMHO he shouldn't even be still attached to the series at all. Kinda like the road course at IMS, get rid of it/him and remove any temptation to actually utilize either.

I wonder what Honda/Ganassi has figured out? Hard to believe now it was fuel mileage alone that allowed them a 'fluke' podium finish when they follow that with such a good performance at Toronto. Dixon was simply untouchable, especially Sunday. And Franchitti was obviously strong.

Didn't Stewart (or the presenter) end up breaking his IRL championship trophy at the presentation in Vegas back in the day after that race? The look on Sea Bass' face was priceless after celebrating that podium finish like a win and then to see his trophy shatter. And in a classic cartoon moment, it did bounce once intact.... and THEN break on the 2nd bounce.

And speaking of Dixon.... He's quietly put his name amongst the greats of the sport. With all the turmoil since the mid 90's it's kinda got lost that we're still seeing some Indycar greats on the track.

NBCSN needs to have Steve Matchett on Indycar any chance they can get where the F1 schedule allows it. Him, Diffey, and Townsend were AWESOME last weekend.

(As usual, NBCSN showing ESPN how you produce a Indycar broadcast)

**** TGBB right in his big fat constipated ***. I REALLY hope that they don't need a second lesson in why he was removed in the first place.

I'm not sure what TCGR has figured out. It could be a situation where since they've suffered from a "lack" of horsepower, they've optimized aerodynamic and mechanical grip to the nth degree. Agree about Dixie as well...

I've decided Marty Reid is fine (at least he's not the problem). It's Cheever and Goodyear who sink the booth. Neither brings anything to the broadcast. In fact I've come to feel sorry for Reid having to try and bring life and energy to the booth when one or both of those guys is all he has to work with. Did anyone notice how much better the booth was when Hinch spent several minutes there the other day? He wasn't as good as Wheldon back in the day but he did show how much a better personality or two would help the color commentary in the booth. There needs to be someone with some passion about Indycar in the booth and then hopefully some knowledge. And then maybe a dose of 'calling it as they see it'. Give Marty Reid somebody to work with.

    Speaking of commentators...
I remember WAY back in the day watching the 500 on a backhaul and Danny Sullivan went high and into the wall. While the broadcast was in commercial they were looking at replays and somebody commented on Sullivan complaining of a push earlier. Uncle Bobby then said "If he was pushing so bad he might've tried turning the wheel a little more and keeping it off the wall..." (I should add they were watching the incar camera view of the accident)

I really think it's Cheever . Goodyear is just annoying. Scott: "The sky is blue", Eddie: "No, Scott. You are wrong. They sky is aquamarine". Marty isn't bad for a bike guy at all. I would love to hear more of Hinch when he's ready to step out of the car.

Hinch would seriously be the first guy to do Indycar announcing BEFORE getting a ride (if you count his appearance in 2010 for the IMS Radio Network as the Driver Analyst when he was still in the Indy Lights circuit) and AFTER hanging up the gloves....

I watched some of the Nationwide Race (whatever that is called at IMS) and I watched most of the Brickyard 400... except for a nice nap in the middle.

Running (and winning) at Indy seems to mean more to the stock car boys than it does to the media or most of the crowd. I mean look at Kyle Busch after he won the friggin' Nationwide race. I know ESPN was busy hyping IMS history and the like but I just didn't feel it. No matter how many times they say it, the comparisons to Foyt, Mears, and Unser and 4 wins at Indy that ESPN kept making just falls flat for me. I don't think there is a comparison. And really, that's the end of the media hype... just the self-generated stuff that the broadcasting network is bringing to the table. No other media outlets seemed to be acting like it was a historical race or had any lasting importance.

I was fine with the BY400 in 1994 but now I'm ready to agree with the curmudgeons back then that it cheapens the 500. Not only that but it's giving these drivers who dreamed of winning Indy as a kid another avenue to take their driving talents and race there and try to win. I think they delude themselves into thinking it means the same as an Indy 500 win and I just don't see it. Every winter you hear the buzz about whether Stewart will run the Indy 500 again. Maybe if there wasn't a BY400 he would. But he's got another path to race and win at Indy. Same for any of the drivers discussed in the old 'double' of Indy and Charlotte... As long as they delude themselves into thinking the BY400 is as good as... or almost as good as an Indy 500 win then why would they go out of their way to do the double?

And as bad as Indycar has been at greasing the skids for short track heroes to move up thru the ranks and ultimately into Indycars... how much worse has the situation become with Nascar teams not only providing rides for these drivers but also offering them the opportunity to "run Indy"? Except it's in late July, not May.

And as long as these Nascar drivers seem to think it's at all on par with Indy in May then the cycle will repeat itself. I'm just not sure how they can look at the stands or watch the media surrounding the BY400 (or the Nationwide race) and delude themselves into believing that.

And speaking of Nationwide race. Man.... that never should've left IRP... ORP... or whatever it is called now (I've lost track!). It went from a can't miss event, exciting in person or on TV, to a race in front of mostly empty aluminum.

Just my rambling opinion and I'm not even sure I have a point! ....

You have a lot of very good points. Here's another one. Since there is not really a "road to Indy" anymore, here's what happens. Kid shows promise at the local level. Starts winning a lot of races at 15-16. SOME NASCAR TEAM WILL SIGN HIM TO A DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT. Is that good? Short term, yes. There's usually a little money involved and some bump in profile. In the long term, no since most of them get discarded after a few years if they don't turn into wonderkind. Is it good for Indycar? Hell no, but it's their own damn fault because they haven't glanced much further than than somebody waving a check for a long time. It's not going to change until and unless the "Road to Indy" is re-established and they open up the rules so fringe owners can afford to one off Indy with year old stuff. When was the last time there was a legit new team that's come down the pike? Same problem in USAC...

I don't have a link but Tony Stewart broke his leg (in two places I believe) in a Sprint car last night and will miss this week's Sprint Cup race (at the least obviously).

Good thing he's the team owner or else this probably wouldn't be sitting well with the owner.

Pit Pass: IndyCar test on IMS road course next month could pave way to race

At least one Indy car is coming to Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s road course next month.

The car of a yet-to-be- determined team will complete laps in various configurations as a possible precursor to an IndyCar race to be held next May.

The dates being considered are Sept. 4 and Sept. 6. Firestone has an oval-track test set for Sept. 10-11.

Derrick Walker, IndyCar’s president of competition and operations, is finalizing details.

IMS President Doug Boles said the car — and maybe a second car — will travel in the counter-clockwise configuration being used this weekend by MotoGP and also try the clockwise path used by Formula One from 2000-07.

When going clockwise, the test will go through the oval track’s Turn 1 as the late Dan Wheldon did when he ran a car here in fall 2011. That’s the only time an Indy car has been on the road course that debuted in 2000.

An IndyCar road course race in May is being considered to serve as a start-your-engines event to the Indianapolis 500.

Boles said that if an IndyCar road race happens next May, the circuit will get modified. One part that needs attention, he said, is the infield section of the oval’s first turn.

“The last corner coming out of the infield (it’s Turn 4 this weekend) is really tight,” Boles said. “It would be too slow (for a car).”

Boles said the part of the road course located behind the IMS Hall of Fame Museum and the north end of the infield likely would be modified, too.

“But it’s all conceptual right now,” he said.

Any reconstruction of the road course will lead to a total repaving of the infield section, something MotoGP riders should applaud. It’s one of the details being discussed by IMS and Dorna, the sanctioning body, as they work toward a possible return of motorcycle racing in 2014.

Two-time Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix winner Dani Pedrosa said the IMS road course could be more interesting, but what it needs more than anything is additional use.

“Sometimes it can be that the track is a little more slippery ... but mostly it’s just that way because nothing’s happened there in a year,” he said.
