The same guy as the new Star Trek pictures...

Interesting. I for one don't know what to think about this yet.

Star Wars Episode XII....this time it's different...

I hope he doesn't put random lense flares all over the place like he did in Star Trek, almost ruined the movie with that crap.

Abrams is good, so I might see the movie. But the last thing I think we need is another Star Wars movie

Episode VII, so change your title.

I'm pretty hopeful if it's Abrams.

Still would prefer something outside of the current movie-verse. Knights of the Old Republic or something completely new would be terrific.

He's probably the best choice. I was remarking in 2009 how one of the things that made the remake of Star Trek seem fresh was how it felt more like a Star Wars movie on some levels, so I can easily imagine him bringing a terrific energy to Episode VII.

This is all so damned bizarre. From whenever I first discovered Star Wars (I think I was around 6) to the age of about 13, there were the three Star Wars movies, and there was Star Trek and its 90's spinoff series (Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager).

Since that time we got the special editions, the crappy prequels, the Star Trek universe got rebooted, and now the director of THAT movie is making a 7th Star Wars. Wild for someone like me.

I feel like some kind of wormhole is going to open up if the director of Star Trek also does Star Wars. Isn't that blasphemy?

I think JJ Abrams will do as good a job as anyone not named Joss Whedon on this, so it's a good choice. Frankly anyone not named George Lucas can only make it better. I also think Brad Bird would have done a good job

I'm relieved Joss did not get it. I don't like the idea of his style imprinted onto that universe. I think he's at his best when he's working in his own universes with his own creations/characters.

Could the thread title be fixed, seriously? Star Trek 12 (or XII, if you will) comes out this summer and is also directed by J.J. Every time I see the 'XII' in the title I need adjust my brain from Trek to Wars.

I think it's cool J.J. has been give SW too. He can only do good with it, in my opinion. Talk about a pop culture explosion when Episode VII is released...it's gonna be crazy.

Keep in mind that with JJ Abrams now directing, this is the most you'll hear about SW VII until...it's release.

As a Star Trek fan, I feel a bit betrayed. Not sure I want the director of Star Trek to be doing other things of such scale. Does this mean we can look forward to future Star Treks with Abrams as executive producer and some lower tier director?

My guess is he'll do Star Wars 7 then go back to do Star Trek 3.

I don't consider what he is doing with Star Trek to be related in any way to the Star Trek I know so to me it's no big deal.

Looks like Disney is actually going to produce three new movies, AND produce character spin-off movies.

Walt Disney Co. DIS +0.41%is developing films based on “Star Wars” characters, Chief Executive Robert Iger said Tuesday, in addition to the three sequels the company has already said it would make.

Screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are at work on films centered on characters from the blockbuster science-fiction series, Mr. Iger said in an appearance on CNBC. He declined to elaborate on details such as which characters the films would include or when they would be released.

The film projects will come in addition to “Star Wars” sequels Disney has been developing since October, when the entertainment giant paid more than $4 billion in cash and stock for Lucasfilm Ltd., the company that produced “Star Wars” and its many sequels and prequels. Disney said at the time that it would produce three new films in the lucrative series, starting in 2015.

I would jump for joy if they somehow did a Jabba spin off movie, but it would have to be during his time in Tatooine not some way back prequal crap.
