Default Walsh is saying that there is a 50/50 chance that Larry comes back to the Pacers

    Chris Sheridan ‏@sheridanhoops
Donnie Walsh says it's sort of 50/50 that Larry Bird will return to the Pacers in some capacity. Live on air now: http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2013/02...io-feb-1-show/

Not a big Bird fan but I rather have him than Walsh, let's hope is true.

He actually said that he took the job thinking Larry would be back in a year, but now he's not so sure. Keeps telling Larry that he should come back.

Man I hope that's true. Would love to see what Bird could do after building such a solid foundation.

Walsh also said he's not going to be here long term either. So I'd assume that if Bird does not come back, this becomes Pritchard's show completely.

What this says to me is that Walsh won't be making changes b4 the TD in 3 weeks if he feels Bird will be coming back.

That's not at all how the interview sounded. It sounded like changes wouldn't be made because he's happy with the roster, not because Larry may or may not be coming back.

Sure, may sound like that. Donnie knows how to talk the talk.

I still think Walsh is only here because Simon doesn't have much of a working relationship with Pritchard so he asked Donnie for a favor, come in for a year and keep an eye on things until Larry's back.

I think that's exactly what happened. He basically says that. I still think they would pull the trigger on a trade if they thought it improved the team. I don't think Larry's future has anything to do with that.

Meh, maybe. I don't think he'd do it w/o talking it over with Larry at least though.

He said he doesn't know what Bird will do which is obvious, but he added that Bird would do good where ever he goes, so I think Walsh isn't expecting Bird to come back to the Pacers, but will probably take another job.

Remember Bird was set to come back this year and then quit after talking to Simon. Apparently Simon didn't want to spend the money that Larry did. so I think whether he comes back will depend on whether he and Simon can get on the same page.

I know Larry still talks to the team and Walsh so he would probably be somewhat interested in coming back, but it would again depend on a conversation with Simon. He'll want to know if Simon will keep this team together. Bottom line I think it depends on what 'Simon Says.'

Really? This is the first I've heard of it. Not doubting you, just surprised.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

I've been saying that I felt like there was a decent chance Larry would be back. Now I guess 50/50 is a split decision, but it still confirms that it at least is a topic of discussion in the Pacers front office. I think this is the first time Walsh has addressed it directly though to my knowledge. He's just confirming what I had been speculating.

Ok, gotcha. I read that as you saying that Donnie/Larry had been saying this during this time. Was a bit surprised.

Donnie said on JMV the day of the presser that Larry was going to leave for at least a year and he was keeping the seat warm.

Basketball can really wear people down. I'm a coach's son, and I hear every year "this is gonna be my last season." Get away from it for a bit, and your batteries recharge.

I wonder if Larry is playing a waiting game with Herb about the spending issue.

I think he comes back. He's too competitive not to see how far this team can go under his management. A trip to the ECF this season would seal it, he wouldn't be able to resist trying to make the moves that get this team to the finals or beyond.

If Larry doesn't come back, I'd like to see Reggie in the FO with KP. I think Reggie would represent very well and it would be good for the NBA.
