So I was thinking about Friday's game and how each player would look in the pinstripes and was mentally going through each number on the roster and came to a screeching halt at 24. The last Pacer (to my recollection) to wear #24 was Jonny Bender. Envisioning PG in a #24 pinstripe jersey made me think of the striking similarities in build he has to Bender. Both tall lanky players with unbelievable athleticism. The more and more I thought about it the more incredible it became at how it seems what PG is doing now is what everyone had hope Bender would be able to do. When we traded Antonio Davis for him in '99 everyone was enamored with the potential he showed. And in his first 4 years he showed flashes of brilliance. Unfortunately those knees of his just couldn't hold up. In his last couple of years here he was rapidly developing as a sharpshooter from 3 and possessed freakish athleticism that allowed him to finish anywhere within a 10 foot radius of the hoop. Their personalities on the court even shared some similarities. About the only place I'd say PG is substantially better would be dribbling but I have a feeling if Bender could have logged as many minutes as PG has through 3 years he would have been much better in that department as well.
What say you? Have any of you ever thought about this before? Or do any of you think they are not really comparable?
