Default Let's talk sense: what do they see in Edwards?

Today, we've seen another scrub waived on by, but we still have Edwards suiting up. He is tall, but clearly does not know what to do on the court. He's had months now to learn the plays and schemes and has yet to show a single clue come game time. This seems to say to me that his lack of intelligence is an even greater liability than his lack of talent. We've bashed on him all season, but it does not seem to matter to the guys upstairs.

I'd like a legitimate (or even reasonable) answer to this question:
Why is DW/LB hanging on to Edwards?

    Here's a follow-up:
What do they see that we simply can't?

I can only assume it's because he's tall and can block shots (sorta). I'd have cut him long ago; I don't know what else TPTB (The Powers That Be) see in him.

John Edwards must have a video of Rick, Donnie and Larry...

...doing something to each other, together.

It must be blackmail. I can not come up with any other possible explanation.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

I can't even seem to find a scouting report for Edwards. Not one positive quote about him from our coaching staff. In a Donnie Walsh chat on pacers.com, he basically said that Edwards was not released because he played center and Foster was injured. Does anyone have a report on him?

Donnie did not even seem convinced when he was talking about him being the player they kept. Remember he was saying that he would make the NBA one day, then said well I guess he is in now.

That makes me think it is the Simmons who like having a 7 foot prospect on the team rather than Donnie.

~Interesting~ speculation... I never thought of it that way. I'm still not sure I can buy that but maybe I've been conditioned by the Star to believe that the Simons have no input on basketball matters and are the most perfect owners in all of sports.

As to the question... I've asked it myself and I can't figure it out. He doesn't even play 'tall'. There are shorter players who play 'taller' than Edwards. I'd rather have a player who could play if called upon, whatever the position, than a 7'er who can't play and will rarely play if ever. Why bother?

I think once Pollard gets healthy he will be gone.
Sorry, I didn't know advertising was illegal here. Someone call the cops!

This is all I can find.

    http://www.nba.com/pacers/news/camp_rookies_041028.html

Though Edwards survived the cut, Walsh said that didn't necessarily mean the 7-foot rookie from Kent State would be on the final roster.

"John Edwards will end up being in the NBA, for sure," said Walsh. "I guess he is, for now."...

...A late-bloomer who played one year of high school varsity basketball and walked on as a freshman at Kent State, Edwards was an All-MAC selection as a senior. He has demonstrated a nice touch around the basket and a willingness to work to polish his relatively raw game.

One year in HS, walked on in college where he played all four years, finally making the All-MAC team his last year. Selected by a contender with enough of an exemption to get someone of better quality.

    Still here.

I'd expect the P's are still evaluating. He hasn't been given a guaranteed contract for the year, has he?

Slick Leonard was touting Edwards in the pre season as a guy who looks like he will be able to play in the NBA some day.

For the last couple of years some were dogging Primoz much like Edwards is getting the treatment here now. If Edwaqrds sticks all year and is re-signed, the answer to the question will be obvious: the brass think the kid will be an NBA center one day.

Well, since he can't play right now, Jermaine needs someone to dunk on...

Not sure what the angst is about... he'll be cut next. I'd have kept him over Fowkes.

Course, I'd have kept Holcomb, too...

Especially considering that, when we're healthy (never), we're pretty deep at center for a change. I guess right now his roster spot is kind of a tossup between a 10th rate 6'5" guy and a 10th rate 7' guy.

I have a question, who is better, John Edward now or the Primoz Brezec when we draft him?

If he is at the same level with the Primoz four years ago, why cannot we expect him to be like Primoz years after?

Primoz by a long shot. He didn't have a good post game, and he wasn't very heavy, but he'd been playing pro ball for a while and he was a great spotup shooter.

I asked a similar question a few days back and I think the answer is:
There is no logical reason why Edwards is on the team. None. Even IF they viewed him as a project for some time in the distant future, well the future is now and that spot could be used by somebody else who could potentially contribute SOMEWHERE on the floor.

Why was Johnson the first spare part to be cut? How did Fowlkes hold a spot longer than Johnson... and how did Edwards hold a spot longer than either (and still continue to be here)?

There is absolutely no obvious logical reason whatsoever. So the answer must lie in some seemingly illogical reasoning... somehow...
