Default Pacers looking to keep West next season? (Update: new story from Kravitz in post #52)

    http://www.foxsportsohio.com/01/20/1...99&feedID=8888

Indiana forward David West is another unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Interestingly, the Pacers seem to have no interest in moving him and aren't really taking any calls. Sources say that's because the Pacers feel they have a pretty good shot at retaining West (much like they did when they matched Portland's offer for Roy Hibbert).
Let's hope it's 10 million and under, for 3 years or less.

If we give West a large offer, it pretty much assures that Granger or Hibbert is out of here, given what's happening with PG.

    I hope so.

Without him, we would be much worse. He is the only one on the team who can score in 1 on 1 situations. Thats why we go to him in the 4th quarter...
Paul George still needs screens and help, and i still don't feel comfortable with him going 1on1, especially in the 4th.
I bet our record would be much worse if we didn't have D-West.

I need to completely refresh my understanding of the team's salary situation, but I could see him getting between 10 and 12 million a season.

Pay what it takes to keep him.

A positive thing when considering resigning D. West is the type of player he is. With his style of play his age becomes less of a factor. Even when certain skills diminish, we still have a young core to pick up the slack.

I can see a 2/$24, maybe 3/30 deal. That'd still give us the MLE to and minimums to fill out the roster I believe.

The thing I'm worried about is finding a backup 4 and 1 for next year. I don't mean a "high quality" one or anything, just one period. We're not going to pick up Hansbrough's 4 mil option, that's just dumb. I suppose it's conceivable we could actually keep DJ on an even cheaper deal than hes on now now that I think about it, but he's picked it up a bit.

That's about what I would think. He won't get any offers for more then 12 so I could see us keeping him for 4/44 - 4/48. If we can keep Granger and West for that then the team can still sign PG to a max deal and keep the core together along with Hibbert. It lonly leaves us around 15 mil to spend on the entire bench but I think it's the right way to go.

I'm a huge fan of West, but I really don't have any interest in signing him for 4 years. 3 makes me nervous.

3yrs and 10 per is some thing I'd be fine with. Danny will sign for less than his contract now and PG gets the max. Fill out the roster with cheap vets.

Say we let West walk: Who do we get to replace him? What other veteran PF could we get that would be as good as West but cheaper (or as expensive but younger)?

i really dont have a clue on what the market is this season, will West be the best PF out there? I'd like to keep him here. I think 3/30 would be fantastic.

Interestingly, the Pacers seem to have no interest in moving their best interior offensive presence and team leader, and aren't really taking any calls because Donnie Walsh and Kevin Pritchard are not clueless beat writers for Fox Sports Ohio.
    Adjusted.

Hopefully, Plumlee can fill in at the backup 4. We will use the next couple of drafts to get proven college guys with hi floors and low ceilings to fill out the rest of the roster.

Problem with resigning West is that, assuming George gets extended, resigning Granger would send us into the lux tax territory

Not happy to hear we are trying to keep him period. We need someone younger to be our Power Forward going forward.

I can't believe any Pacer fans would want West to leave. Without him, they are DONE as an Eastern Conference contender. It should be the Pacers #1 priority in the offseason to get him re-signed.

That said, if I'm Houston or Portland, I look at West and think very heavily about offering him a 3 year, $36 million contract and hoping he does exactly for those franchises what he did for the Pacers.

You want to go bargain shopping to replace our primary clutch player? Good luck with that/ welcome back to 41-41.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

Yep I remember when people(including myself) said the same thing when Danny went out, I don't buy what you are selling.

Really want West to stay, however, only 2-3 year deal at $10M or less. No reason for a young and up and coming team to be putting a lot of money in an aging vet.
Lance + Starting SG = Awesome

    Now really free Lance!

That's exactly the reason you WANT to keep David West. You NEED aging vets, especially productive ones. He sure as heck isn't playing like one this season.

But hey, as a fan of another Eastern Conference team, if you want to make your team worse, by all means, go ahead.

I actually meant this as a rhetorical question. I absolutely do not want to see him leave. As far as I'm concerned, he's the heart, soul and b*lls of this team, and I doubt we could find a better PF via free agency/trades.

Are you kidding? I'm not worried about losing West. With Donnie Walsh in charge, I'm more worried about him getting $15 mil per year.
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.
