    Default Indiana Pro Soccer Team

Indianapolis is getting a pro soccer team, associated with the NASL.

You can vote for the name here.

The names suck, but there are some good suggestions if you go down and read the comments.

Finally here is some info on the NASL if you don't know of it.

I really hope that Indianapolis taxpayers aren't asked to build a stadium for this.

Plan is to build a stadium in 2 years and move to the MLS. Soccer specific venues are awesome. So pumped for this, will be great for downtown summers! Already put down my deposit on season tix.

This will only work if they can actually get into the MLS, and that will almost certainly include having a soccer specific stadium as part of the requirements for expansion.

Is a move to the MLS a stated goal?

This has been my understanding from the beginning. Portland used this same strategy successfully, over 1000 season tickets deposited on in the first 24 hours. Carroll stadium will only sit about 8,000 for soccer. That is pretty good folks.

Indy has a good Hispanic population (often the basis for successful MLS franchises), it has 3 extremely successful college soccer programs within 2 hours (IU....the 8 time national champs and also Butler and Notre Dame). They will build a team with local talent that can compete on a national level. IU soccer has produced 41 MLS players after the draft today. This is a rich soccer state, it's just that people don't really acknowledge it for whatever reason.

I just don't buy that the MLS could be successful here when our NBA team has had poor support over the last decade, despite this being a basketball-crazed state.

Soccer is cheap. Season tickets are like 150 bucks to 400 bucks. They already have close to 1000 deposits.

There's going to be initial excitement for almost anything that's new. But how exciting will it be in five years? The Pacers also have dirt cheap tickets in the balcony, but that didn't help them for a while. And that's a sport that people in Indiana love. The Pacers also have been here forever and have been pretty successful for the most part.

Know your market. There would be a lot of support from the younger generations, and NBA basketball is often held as an inferior product to college basketball in the majority of the state.

NBA basketball is definitely inferior in popularity to NCAA basketball in Indiana, but it's still basketball, a sport that is way more popular than soccer. The NBA routinely brings athletes into Indianapolis who are household names. Soccer wouldn't. I'm just not convinced that soccer could be sustainable long term when our NBA team has struggled. Will there be initial excitement? Of course. But it won't be new forever. Five years in, the newness will be worn off.

It's fine if a soccer team wants to move here, but I don't think taxpayers should be on the hook for a venue.

You have to look at tin numbers. If the Pacers average 11000 that is bad in nba terms. If the soccer team averages 11000 wouldn't that be a success?

They are following the same plan Portland and Chicago did.

On a percentage basis in attendance, MLS teams are doing a fantastic job and they have fun unique stadiums. This will be great for a downtown that needed something besides Indians games in the summer.

One advantage (albeit minor compared to the numerous disadvantage) that professional soccer will have over the NBA here in Indy, is the schedule. The lack of so many games will make the home games seem more important.

I do agree that it could make for a fun summer evening.

I'm really excited by this news. I already know a half dozen people who are going to be season ticket holders. I think this is great for not only for the city but for the state too.

I think it's a good thing. I just don't see how they're going to build a stadium. MLS requires a soccer only stadium of around 20k right? I can't see them getting public financing.

If they do become an MLS team Indy'd have to be the most oversaturated sports market in the country. Just glad soccer's a summer sport.

From the rendering, it looks like they are wanting to redo the track stadium at IUPUI. If they could just re-do that, add seats on both ends and redo the bleachers, and add suites on the other side (like it shows), it would be a great location. That place looks bad right now, but could be a cool place.

Yes, 20,000 people is pretty much where you need to be. Toyota Park in Chicago is exactly 20,000
