    Default Slow your roll

I understand the excitement. I am thrilled with where we are at this season to this point. Our defense is playoff intensity.

The reason I say slow your roll is that when the playoffs come around great teams get better. Particularly on the defensive end. So what happens to our already weak offense when the clamp down happens in the ECF or even the semis?

We have a lot of maturation before we say we are contenders. Are we showing in the regular season that we can contend with championship caliber teams? Yes.

Is this any different than last year? No

Will the seasoning of the playoffs make us mentally stronger in April, May, and maybe June? We will see when we get there. But the way we are playing is no guarantee that we will raise the stakes when we face championship teams.

It is a long season. Case in point many reputable posters were selling Paul, Vogel, and the entire team.

Don't swing the pendulum so far. Or just ignore me and freak out if we don't win it all. Then want TPTB to trade everyone in the offseason.

I don't get this. People have been crowning the Knicks as contenders on this very board for 2 months and they have accomplished less than we have.

I would venture to say that the Pacers have yet to play their best ball as well. You can't just say that this is as good as we'll get and come playoffs we won't get better as well.

We'll find out how good of a team we can be when Granger returns and the team sorts things out. The offense will be better when he comes back, but we'll need to see how it flows. I don't think its too far reaching to say that we are contenders in the conference.

I get what your saying, MC, but I think people for the most part still have a healthy level of skepticism. It's just that, aside from vnzla, people are not posting about that cause who wants to focus on the negatives? We've got a good team that is at about the same place last years team was. The thing is we've got the potential to really turn it up even further if Danny gets back into form, if Hibbert can clean up his hook shot again, and/or West and Hill get back to the form they have shown earlier in the season. The team feels like it is only working at 75% right now, but we are still winning tough games. It's a great situation to be in.

To the OP: You have a point, but while the excitement is as overflowing as ever beating the top 2 of the East, I will say that there's a reason to feel that this current squad will be contenders, and I'm fairly optimistic about them ever since they got into the 3-6 hole.

It's the defense. It is an elite level for more than 80% of the time since the beginning. While scoring has been a struggle even with PG turning into a scoring savior, for as long as they continually work out their air-tight defense I will always look forward for this team to contend this season regardless of what position in the playoffs they'll end up with (yes, I expect them to make the playoffs!). It is easier for opposing teams to learn how to break the others' offense rather than for them to break the others' defense. We just have to enjoy every great win as this makes being a fan really fun.

Anyway, I'm not as suicidal as some here just in case we lose to the Bobcats...so I can't relate too much on what you're saying...

I'll grant you that we shouldn't get too low, but there aint nothing wrong with getting too high.... except if you are Brandon Rush.......

I would say there is a difference. Good playoff teams can SOMETIMES ramp up there defense for a given game. However, good defense is the norm for the Pacers and our opponent will face that each and every game we play.

what is very different from last season and what has me the most excited is the play and development of Paul George. He's turned into a star player right before our eyes.

    That is exciting.

And then you add the defense which is very, very good. I mean trust me this defense is really good. That is exciting.

Obviously this team still has a lot of flaws, so I am not looking too far ahead, just trying to enjoy the ride.

I will say this, if the Pacers offense in the playoffs is at the same level as it is right now the Pacers won't win the championship and probably won't get much closer than they did a year ago. But there is reason to believe the offense can get a lot better in the next 3 months.

This question is ridiculous. Clearly Indiana is the only team in the league that puts forth all of its effort in the regular season. Every team but the Pacers gets better in the playoffs.

Seriously though, after reading the post game thread last night I idly thought to myself "I wonder who will start the first don't overreact thread?" I didn't wonder who would have the funniest response, but this is it.

Shouldn't a team with an "elite" defense have a higher road winning percentage? See: Memphis, Chicago, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, and the Clippers.

The majority of our road losses have come against playoff quality teams, or at least teams that were playing like playoff quality teams at the time (Milwaukee).

    for example:
    San Antonio
    Atlanta x2
    Milwaukee x2
    New York
    Golden State
    Oklahona City
    Boston

That accounts for all but two road loss. (Minnesota (.500) and Bobcats (second game of the season))

True, but the Pacers started off the season with a ton of road games when they weren't playing well. They were 1-6 in their first 7 road games. Now that they are playing much better they have been playing mostly at home so they haven't been able to improve their road record. of course the losses at Boston and Atlanta were disappointing.

My point is I am not worried about the road record right now. In fact the Pacers end the month with 7 of 9 on the road against some beatable teams. So lets see how they do in those 7.

I for one would like to see some examples of posters overreacting, because I haven't seen any. There's enough pessimism that comes out of 2 or 3 posters, we don't need to be adding to it just because people are happy with how the team has been performing.

For as much pessimism that posters post within game threads, post game threads, etc (myself included) I think a lil optimism around here can be a tad warranted.

I don't see too many overboard "homer" type posts that are predicting anything CRAZY. Just a bunch of people that are excited to see the team play at a higher level than we saw the first month and a half of the season.

    Just my opinion though.
