Of course it is the coaches plan. His two best players/scorers are in the post and his guards struggle shooting the ball.
I agree that he should utilize the paint as his main weapon. But he shouldn't forgo perimeter shooting. It's important to create space for your post players to operate. Memphis didn't do that last night.

We clogged the lane and they didn't punish us for it.

Let's discuss the points in the paint match up.

    Take a look at ESPN's shot chart -> http://espn.go.com/nba/shotchart?gameId=400278172

If you break it down, you'll see that they hit 6 shots in the paint in each quarter except for the 4th quarter. In the 4th, they only hit 3 shots in the paint (one of them was a Darrel Arthur 17 footer that apparently counts as points in the paint). So, in overall they hit 6 + 6 + 6 + 3 = 21 shots in our paint. That equals 42 points but I'm guessing that the FT awarded after the and-1 count as well, which makes sense.

Outside of our paint? They hit 1 shot in the first quarter, 2 shots in the second, 3 shots in the third and 2 in the 4th. That's only 8 field goal makes outside of the paint.

Apparently, ESPN's shot chart has missed some shots since they have credited the Grizzlies with 31 field goal makes while the shot chart only presents 28 but anyway.

Let's take a look at the missed field goals for the Grizzlies.

In the paint: They missed 9 shots in the paint in the first quarter. They missed 8 shots in the paint in the second quarter. They missed 2 shots in the paint in the third quarter. They missed 8 shots in the paint in the fourth quarter. In overall, they missed 8 + 8 + 2 + 9 = 27 shots in our paint.

So, the Grizzlies shot 21 / 48 in our paint.

Perimeter shots: They missed 4 perimeter shots in the first quarter (I'm not going to count the 44 ft heave). They missed 5 perimeter shots in the second quarter. They missed 6 perimeter shots in the third quarter (I'm not going to count the 39 ft heave either). They missed 7 perimeter shots in the fourth quarter. In overall, they missed 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 22 perimeter shots.

So, the Grizzlies shot 8 / 30 from the perimeter.

    21 / 48 equals 43.7%.

    8 / 30 equals 26.6%.

These calculations prove joew8302 right. The Grizzlies are bad in outside shooting. Or they were bad last night, at least. That's on the players, not the coach. However, I believe that the coach could draw some plays that could result in open 3 pointers. 'Cause the only open 3 that I remember from last game was a transition 3.

Anyway, back on the points in the paint issue. The Grizzles may have scored 44 points in our paint but they needed to attempt 48 shots to do that. So, we held them at under 1 point per shot and that's something to take into consideration.

However, that 43.7% seems a bit high for our defense. Let's see how Memphis usually shoots inside the paint. Here it is -> http://hoopdata.com/teamshotlocs.aspx

Memphis is shooting 58.6% at the rim, 41.7% from 3-9 feet and 42% from 10-15 feet.

So, that 43.7% isn't so bad as Memphis is generally above average in shooting in the paint.

Paul's fairly easily defending guys that Granger has traditionally struggled against. Durant, Carmello, Iggy, Deng, and now Gay... really impressive, imagine how good he could be defensively in a few years when gains more strength and experience. I'm looking forward to the match ups against Pierce, LeBron, and Harden here soon. He might get lit up, but it'll be fun watching him compete regardless.

Interesting. I predict Lance will be better than PG. Nice conundrum to have.

As long as both are still on the Pacers in the coming years then I don't care who is better than whom.

On a side note, I noticed some comments about Augustin pouting. I was under the impression that he took it professionally and was working hard during practices?

I've watched every game so far, and I've not seen where one could ascertain Augustin was pouting.

If Lance becomes better than Paul George, we are definitely going to contend for a long time in the coming years.

I thought he played well yesterday, but I don't think his demeanor was too different than usual. I think its just his character - just as Hansbrough is often overly enthusiastic, I think DJ is the opposite. I actually think its a good trait to have in a PG.

In the after game interview with DJ, it was brought up he doesn't show emotion on the court. That he has a poker face. In a "GREAT BIG SMILE", DJ stated his face never shows emotion on the court.

Pendergraph and Young for Patterson and Scott Machado.

I'm not high on Machado. He seems to be struggling in the D-League. Plus, I believe that he would be a horrible fit within our offense.

But I'd take Patterson in a heartbeat as well. He's averaging 12.5 PPG, 4.6 RPG and 1.5 APG in 28.3 minutes so far. He is a bad rebounder but the guy can score and pass the ball.

Agreed. I'd happily ship DJ out for Andre Miller, but I have no complaints about his attitude.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

Andre Miller is a great veteran point guard. He is savvy and can run an offense. He can also post up. He would be invaluable here.

The reason I made that trade proposal is that Patterson and Pendergraph's salary doesn't match up. If they did, I'd trade straight up or throw in a 2nd round pick or Stanko. Personally, I'd throw in both as sweeteners.

As far as I'm concerned, Stanko is trade fodder like Lorbek was. He'll never don a Pacers uni either.

Yeah, I'm sure Paul George's defense had nothing to do with your 3 of 17 night. I watched the game from the 10th row yesterday, and I can tell you... Rudy Gay was handled.

OTOH, West got totally worked off picks and the block by ZBo and Gasol all game. I think that ZBo is probably one of the very best post players in the NBA now. By a significant margin. I'd probably only rate Griffin above him as a PF, but for a back-to-the-basket post game? ZBo is king right now.

I remember turning to my wife last night at the end of the third and told her how we might very well pull this game out. Just looked like Memphis was getting gassed by the physicality.

There are some people here that would say that Gerald Green is worthless for example. But his stats are not bad for his minutes.

Have you noticed in the last few weeks that posters aren't whining or complaining about the bench play? No more last season's bench was better tripe.

ZBo is a beast, that's a given. We don't usually see West being so outmuscled in the post. He usually holds his own. But ZBo was just too much.

Gerald Green's not worthless, but his stats are terrible, and I don't think I'm overreacting here. PPG is only 1 stat on the stat sheet. His shot selection is on par with Monta Ellis. Possibly worse.
