Phil Jackson - This is not a test of who is a class act. He has 11 championships in an era of free agency. Players swear by him and want to play for him. He knows how to stoke egos of "me first" multi-millionaires. Now if I wanted my kid to learn the fundamentals of basketball - I would hire Bob Knight and Larry Brown, but this thread is about who is the best basketball coach of all time.
I would not argue about Jackson at the pro level. I don't think you can pick an overall winner in this. You will have a pro coach and a college coach.....

I just don't think you can compare college and NBA, let alone Men's vs. women's.

However, there's guys like Coach K and Wooden who would probably be great coaches regardless.

No one wins a title with that kind of team. However, Jordan didn't win until Phil arrived and LA didn't win until he got their either even with the superstars....

What I said is quite true and Knight has commented on it in the past. There was a reason why Wooden got every great center, Walton, Alcindor and many more from all over the country. UCLA boosters made cash payments and gave gifts to these players. I suppose you don't want to hear that Rick Mount had a job checking coats at alumni events at Purdue and he received $100 tips. He worked a few nights per year and made thousands of dollars..... I don't suppose you would believe that either. I never said Wooden wasn't a great coach. Adolph Rupp was a great coach. Do you want to talk about the things that bigot and crook did?
Since when did I give a crap about Rick mounts and purdue?

I consider Wooden like I think about baseball players on steroids getting in the Hall of Fame. There is no place for cheaters on this list. Wooden's teams were bought and paid for. Bobby Knight ran what may have been the cleanest program in NCAA history......
Choking a player= fine, allegedly paying one= what a freakin Cheater

He didn't choke a player. He grabbed him that was all.... That freaking whiner never amounted to a hill of beans anywhere else. I let you know these things so that you won't make such mindless, ignorant posts......

Don't waste your time discussing the virtues of Knight with the blind faithful. Knight never did a thing wrong as there is always an excuse to make Knight blameless as stated Neil Reid was worthless. It's funny how physical, mental, or verbal abuse is never a big deal when it's connected to Knight.

Sometimes you just need to consider what you are hearing and from who. That's all.

I know of no other coach who commands the loyalty of his explayers like Knight does. Yes, malcontents like Reed cried as did a few others that couldn't make it. I agree it was like a Marine bootcamp but those that did survive it have a special bond with the general. I don't know that I have ever heard and ill word from any of them....... Some just couldn't cut it and that is a fact....

I am pretty sure that the way the drill sargeant treats the recruits is very much the way Bobby Knight treated his players in practice....... It worked and it worked well.....

Show me an NBA championship team that doesn't have great players on it. It's no coincidence that Phil made things work and that Kobe and MJ haven't won without him.

It's not a coincidence that MJ retired after winning his last one and Kobe lost Shaq.

Phil Jackson is not a brilliant coach. He just rides on coat tails.

With Gasol (a gift from Memphis) and Lamar Odom.

His last year, Lamar was still with the team and they lose in the second round. First year for Mike Brown, the Lakers go just as far with Troy Murphy instead of Lamar Odom. Now, who's the better coach?

John Wooden from Martinsville is the greatest of all time. There are many who have come close, but there are none who have surpassed.

Woo hoo, a Bob Knight argument! Good thing there was no PD in 1994.

    FWIW: Popovich.

An empty chair could have won with da Bulls...and da Lakers of 2000-2002.

Phil is supposed to be a great people manager, yet he failed to manage the most talented team he ever had with this list of all-stars: ...Karl Malone, Gary Peyton, Horace Grant, Derek Fisher, Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant.

How do you not get it done with that talent?
