Colts will give Harrison $22M bonus

Marvin Harrison has now officially benefited from Peyton Manning's stellar season. League sources tell FOXSports.com that the Colts and Harrison have agreed to a seven-year, $66 million extension with a stunning $22 million in guaranteed bonus money.

The deal averages about $9 million per year during the first four years, including bonus money, but is still relatively cap-friendly.
Calls to Harrison's agent Tom Condon and the Colts have not been returned.

The Colts are now in position to retain all three members of their Triple Threat. With Harrison's deal done, the Colts can now turn their attention to fellow free agent-to-be Edgerrin James. If they don't get a deal done with James, they can use the franchise tag to retain his rights.

In 12 games this year, Harrison has 67 receptions for 870 yards and 12 touchdowns. During a Monday Night Football game against the Vikings in Week 9, he and Manning hooked up for the 664th time, breaking the NFL record for most completions by a quarterback-receiver tandem.

Earlier in that same game, Harrison collected his 800th catch. It took him just 131 games to reach that milestone, 23 fewer than the next quickest receiver, Jerry Rice.
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

This actually gives us a very good chance of resigning Edge.

You are correct btown - tagging him would be the right answer. As far as the others, I doubt Stokely goes anywhere. I think they hope Bashir goes somewhere else.

Well, Stokley I think is going to stay here because he likes being with Peyton...someone said this on NFL Countdown...Mort I think. He doesn't mind taking less money.

    More info:

Star receiver agrees to 7-year deal

The Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday achieved their second contract milestone of the season, reaching agreement on a seven-year, $67 million extension with wide receiver Marvin Harrison.

Harrison, who was scheduled to enter free agency after this season, is guaranteed $22 million between now and 2006 and received a $6 million signing bonus. He is making $5.56 million this season.

Earlier this year, the Colts locked up quarterback Peyton Manning with a seven-year, $98 million deal that included a $34 million signing bonus.

Harrison, 32, is considered one of the best receivers in the league and is the focal point of the Colts' powerful offense. He draws consistent double coverage and allows Reggie Wayne and Brandon Stokley to excel against single coverage.

The structure of Harrison's contract will allow enough flexibility for the Colts to try to find a way to keep running back Edgerrin James. There is a $7 million roster bonus that can be converted into a signing bonus in order to lower Harrison's cap number in 2005 to around only $3.2 million.

There also is a $10 million flexible roster bonus that can be converted into signing bonus to help the salary cap in 2006.

The Harrison deal is considered the best ever given to a wide receiver. Randy Moss had the previous best deal for a player at the position, an eight-year, $75 million contract that included $18 million in guarantees.

The surprising part about Harrison's contract is that he received it at age 32. Though many top receivers have some of their best seasons in their 30s, a lot of teams don't like giving big-money deals to older receivers.

The Colts had no problem doing this because Harrison has been such a valuable part of their offense along with the fact he is one of the best-conditioned athletes on the team.

Negotiations concluded Tuesday night and the deal was sent into the league office Wednesday morning for approval. Once it was approved, it went into the league's salary cap system.

Harrison's agent, Tom Condon, was unavailable for comment.

Condon also negotiated Manning's deal, which was the most given to any quarterback.

Along with James, Stokley will be among the Colts' next targets for re-signing. He's a free agent after this season.

Although the contract technically has $23 million of guarantees, the deal counts only as $22 million because the Colts lowered $1 million of his remaining contract to fit it into this year's cap.

Brad Miller alledgedly was willing to stay with his home-state Pacers for less *before* somebody really threw big money at him, too.

I believe it because Manning and Stokley are good buddies that have been around each other for awhile. And it's not like the Colts will offer bad money.

With Peyton and Marvin locked up, if we give a similar deal to Edge, you'd have to like our chances of winning at least one championship somewhere in the next seven years. e:

Doesn't matter, because Manning is thought of as a good standing guy, Ron and Brad aren't exactly clean. Stokley will stay. I guarentee it.

Besides, Peyton and Brandon were good friends before Brandon ever joined the Colts. Hell, the reason Brandon is a Colt is due to his friendship with Peyton. I have a hard time believing all parties won't negotiate a contract in good faith and get a deal done.

Stokley's offense is easily replacable, should he not be with the Colts next season... Marvin's is not.
