Report: Jets will try to trade Sanchez

    Yes, it’s really over.

Less than a year after the Jets renewed their vows with quarterback Mark Sanchez via a contract extension that bound the player and team together for at least two seasons, the Jets will try to foist the balance of said contract extension onto a new team after only one.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets will try to trade Sanchez in the offseason.

A trade makes the most sense. Apart from the face-saving value of getting something in return for the fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft, trading Sanchez would reduce both the cap charge and the cash expenditure. As it stands, Sanchez is due to earn a base salary of $8.25 million in 2013, along with a workout bonus of $500,000. Since the base salary is fully guaranteed, the Jets will owe Sanchez the full $8.25 million even if he’s cut, with no offset even if he signs elsewhere.

The goal will be to try to persuade a new team to shoulder a portion of the financial burden. Mehta believes the limit for a trade partner will be in the range of $3 million.

Under our analysis of the potential cap hits from keeping, cutting, or trading Sanchez, trading him before June 1 to a team that would pay him $3 million in 2013 would still result in a cap charge of more than $14 million, which is more than the cap hit that would come from cutting Sanchez.

It’s also more than 10 percent of the total 2013 cap for a guy who wouldn’t even be on the team.

Trading Sanchez raises another issue beyond the 2013 season. With a contract that pays Sanchez $11.5 million in compensation come 2014, $14 million in 2015, and $11.25 million in 2016, his next team likely wouldn’t keep him for a second season, barring a significant restructuring.

    Good luck

Jets will have to give up some picks too.

Not gonna happen. Nobody is going to trade for Sanchez and help the Jets out of that dysfunctional mess. The Jets are either going to have to keep him on the team and eat that contract or release him and still eat most of that contract. Nobody is going to take him and that guaranteed year, not even with draft picks.

As a matter of fact, If I were the Pats, I might call and pretend I was interested, start working on a deal and right when you get to the business part, say PSYCH! and hang up.

LOL you'd have to be on crack to trade for him and that contract.

Even if the guy was super cheap no one's giving up an asset for him, any asset. Guess it doesn't hurt to try I suppose.

The Jets are just stupid. They messed up that entire scenario so bad.
There are two types of quarterbacks in the league: Those whom over time, the league figures out ... and those who figure out the league.

Yeah, it's no surprise that their "let's overpay our crappy quarterback since his little feelings got hurt when we sent out fliers to Manning" strategy failed miserably......

The Jets have rapidly become one of my least favorite teams in the NFL, mainly because of all of the unnecessary hype given to such a crappy team. The Sanchez/Tebow hype is probably the most ridiculous media obsession I've ever seen. Has so much attention ever been focused on two players who suck as bad as those two? Who cares about a "controversy" between a crappy quarterback and an even crappier one who shouldn't even be on an NFL roster?

Guys, you have watched him more than i have. Is there any chance of him being good again (was he ever?) or you think his career is good as over now?

Someone will no doubt give him a shot after he is released for lack of any trade interest.

But I am not optimistic. He has the arm strength to play, and at times he even shows decent footwork and other mechanics. But he has no ability to make a good decision, whatsoever.
The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!)

I've never thought he was that good, though the Jets haven't exactly given him the best tools. They also brought in a completely unnecessary distraction with Tebow. I think Sanchez's dome is too jacked up now to play good in NY again. He could maybe succeed somewhere else with a change of scenery if given the right tools.

Believe it or not, he actually has a 94.7 passer rating in 6 playoff games.

    http://www.pro-football-reference.co.../gamelog/post/

He played pretty damn good in the AFC Championship game against the Colts in the 09 season. 17 for 30, 257 yards, 2 TDs, 1 pick. It just wasn't enough to outdo Manning's brilliance that day.

He played extremely well when the Jets upset New England in the playoffs two years ago. 16 for 25, 194 yards, 3 TDs, 0 picks.

He also played well in the AFC Championship game against Pitt, but the defense came up short. 20 for 33, 233 yards, 2 TDs, 0 picks.

So yes, this is a quarterback who at one time showed some decent potential at a young age. To have any chance of salvaging his career though, he needs to get out of NY.

He had a decent rookie year, but nothing super special, about what you expect for a rookie. He was supposed to be a game manager, and he can do that, but either he or his coaches seem to think he is more and want to let him pass and that is why they are is so much trouble.

Weak arm, lack of vision, and lack of pocket awareness, I doubt he will ever me much of anything.

Jets needed to trade up to get RGIII his personality fits them too well, I don't think Sanchez's ever did.

Not even that with his contract he would hurt a team more than he would help one, you would need to take picks on as well from the Jets to even considering taking him on.

I think pretty much everyone called the Sanchez extension/Tebow trade stupid from the get-go. The Jets' FO really is horrible.
