    Eight Points, Nine Seconds Review:
Jared Wade: Breaking Down a Broke-Down Offense - Post Entry Cut

I understand why Frank Vogel likes this offensive action. It is tough to cover, it can create
open layups and it, sort of, allows you to get away with moving screens easily. What Iím
talking about is a staple in the Pacers half-court sets: an action where a perimeter player
feeds the post then rushes directly towards the recipient to cut off his shoulder towards
    the hoop.

Really, it is a fine method to clear out the strong side and give the post player room to
work, all while potentially getting a layup. It worked very well last season at times when
Danny Granger did it. Even this season, it has given Indiana two easy points a few times.

Here is one great example of the play working ideally.

Here is another example of it getting the team two points against Denver last night.

This year, however, it seems to be doing a lot more harm than good by and large.

Paul George has been particularly poor at it on the season as a whole. I imagine it is a
technique that he can figure out. It canít be terribly difficult. And he has probably gotten
better at it as the year has gone on. But throughout the 20 games as a whole, he has just
usually done it like he has been doing most things on offense: indecisively and non-
    threateningly.

The result: everyone ends up tripping over each otherís feet as the shot clock just gets
    closer to zero.

Again, I get the idea. If youíre going to enter the ball and then leave the area you passed
from to give Roy or West room, why not make a rim run? And, hell, why not try to lose
your man in a way that could, potentially, always work? Why not try to catch the defender
    snoozing and get a layup?

If that was the case, sure. But if the cutter is just getting in the way much more often than
he is creating a threat, just tell him to get the hell out of the way.

    Here are a few examples.

In the first, when you watch the play at full speed, it may look like itís just one more bad
post move by Roy Hibbert that results in a careless turnover. And you can certainly argue
that he needs to be more aware of potential help defenders swiping at the ball.

But right after is the same play, slowed down.

Note that Roy does much of what we consider good post play. He establishes excellent,
deep position early in the shot clock and calls for the ball. He receives the pass, keeps the
ball high and starts to spin middle on a smaller defender. Then, realizing DeMarcus Cousins
gets to the inside spot quickly, he counters back to the other side, ready to put up what
feels like it will be a good shot over his right shoulder.

But... Sam Young never cut...CONTINUE READING AT 8p9s

    Piston Powered:
Dan Feldman: Pistons Good at Building Leads, Bad at Winning

The Pistons have built double-digit leads in 15 games this season.

    Theyíve lost most of them.

There is obviously a statistically significant correlation between average largest lead
and winning percentage, but the Pistons Ė who rank 12th in average largest lead and
26th in winning percentage Ė fall furthest from the line of best fit.

Itís worth noting that the Pistonsí average largest lead is inflated by a 40-point win
over the Suns and three other wins Detroit led by 20 in, but the Pistonsí blown leads
are also a significant factor. Why have they blown so many leads? Take your pick,
but the answer probably includes elements of at least some the following:

    • Itís random noise that straightens itself out during the larger sample of a full
      48 minutes.
    • The Pistons are a mentally weak team that falters under pressure.
    • Lawrence Frank creates good game plans.
    • Frank adjusts slowly during games.
    • The Pistons have played more games than any other team, and fatigue affects
      them late in games.
    • Opponents believe they should beat the lowly Pistons, and that mentality keeps
opponents unfocused early and pushes them through late.

Depending on which...CONTINUE READING AT PISTON POWERED

The pistons play like a young team with talent but no experience. They sucker punch you with a big early lead but they never have a clue how to sustain it.

Also, it should be noted that Lawrence frank's refusal to play Andre Drummond late in games has usually coincided with their 4th quarter defensive collapses, as has his infatuation with putting the ball in the hands of stuckey in crunch time as opposed to knight. Stuckey is the more reliable ball handler, but he's also a sure thing to throw up a bad shot against a set defense.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

Plumlee reminds me of a young Dale Davis. Good rebounding and he contests shots well on defense and his offensive game is very raw just like DD's was coming out of college.

Looking at the Hawks vs Warriors game before the Pacers start. Jack Attack has 5pts and 2dimes in 6min. Man, I wish he was our backup pg. *sigh*

Carl Landry looks nice too for the Warriros as a backup PF.

Piston's feed showed David West and he was complaining to the refs before the game had even started. haha.
"We've got to be very clear about this. We don't want our players hanging around with murderers," said Larry Bird, Pacers president.

Beautiful first play on offense...and then bad D just after and we throw the ball away. Aaargh.

Brandon Knight is quietly averaging 19 ppg since Thanksgiving. Should be a good matchup between him and Hill.

    Me too.

The Pistons crew just said that the Pacers' defense is, in terms of efficiency, top-4 since 1970. Anybody else see that stat?
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

Maybe I am just imagining it, but what is up with the camera feed the past few games? It seems zoomed in way too much. I can barely see if a ball is going in or not. It's terrible. And why has the audio been off sync with the video? What's going on FSI? I know the sync issues aren't in my head, I've seen it a few times this year and this game. But does the camera angle or zoom seem way off to anyone else?
