Wow. I have no idea how much is embellished or not for the movie, but just knowing this is even roughly based on a true story, wow. An overall intense movie with a powerful ending.

The critics certainly liked it. But then again, how many Tom Hanks movies don't the critics like? LOL

I feel like Mud purposely deconstructed the authenticity of "love" and "romance". We approach it, as an audience, in the same way Ellis does. You're supposed to love the woman you marry. You're supposed to make good on elaborate plans to be with your true love. You're supposed to win over the girl of your dreams by being her gallant white knight. But we see the truth about love through Ellis' eyes: relationships don't play out like they do in storybooks/movies. Marriages are stressed and undone by financial circumstances. Adventure and adrenaline rush wears off to reveal two people don't really have that much in common or hold the same values. Feelings from one side aren't always reciprocated by the other.

That's why I loved Mud. It was a perfect deconstruction of the popular conceptualization of romance. It's basically a movie about the hard truths we learn, and how we might accept them, told through the eyes of a naive teenage boy confronted with his first real adult decisions. In my view, it's brilliantly done.

TWWB, I think is a bit different. It's about a boy who just isn't really wanted, doesn't have much going on in his life, and has no self-confidence as a result. He exists through the safety net of following a pattern of what he thinks he's supposed to do, where he thinks he's supposed to go, while trying not to upset anyone or make himself heard (and also, through the fantasy of someone far away—his dad—waiting to confirm his self-worth when the time is right). TWWB is less about interrogating notions of romance as it is about learning to love and be yourself. It's beautiful in its own right, then. And quite opposite of Mud really: it's a tale of construction (of confidence, self-worth, etc.), not deconstruction.

Both films really grabbed me, personally, and had me attached to characters, had me going through the emotions and whatnot. I think both McConaughey (sp?) and Rockwell should be nominated, though it's likely either-or and McConaughey (sp again) will probably be competing for himself with Dallas Buyer's Club and Wolf of Wall Street as well...
Good analysis of both, though I think the fact that they go in two different directions (de- vs. construction) is a slight indictment of TWWB. TWWB is extremely enjoyable in the moment and you have to be happy for Rash and Faxon, who are both hilarious and weird looking. But it really is a "summer movie" (light, fun, uplifting, without much to say) especially constrasted with the shitfest of blockbusters from earlier this year. There are a lot of things about the movie that bothered me pretty quickly after it had finished. (Pleasant racist depictions are still racist depictions.)

Whereas Mud, though more allegorically straightforward than the other movies that Nichols has done, is much more thoughtful and pensive. That said, the fact that TWWB wasn't just a Sam Rockwell for-your-consideration highlight video is a testament to Rash/Faxon's writing and casting. Not sure it's been a good year for movies, but these two are fine.

Gravity- see it in 3D. Worth it.

It is excellent but I like the Friday documentary better. Probably just because I'm not that big a fan overall of the Elm Street franchise.

    Haunter(2013)

Nice off the wall spin of a traditional ghost story. Definitely not bad. Kept my interest and kept me guessing. Better than most horror fare these days.

Yeah, I'm a bigger F13 fan, though NOES is my #2.

I've almost broken down a couple times wanting to watch CLM but I'm determined to wait until Halloween (or at least Halloweek; may take a couple days since it's 7 hours long).

    Spoiler Spoiler:
We finally saw it as well and I enjoyed it. I have liked how they have played on off the original series, such as with tribbles and Mudd. I didn't have musch of an issue with your spoiler. As for plot holes, Star Trek in all incarnations always has had them.

    Halloween H2O

Pretty darn good addition to the Halloween franchise. Lots of homages to the original Halloween. Probably my fourth favorite Halloween movie behind 1,2 and 4.

    Ghostbusters

Enough Said - was very good. Well written, and the acting was excellent. More of a character study, not much really happens, but I enjoyed the movie.

Really enjoyed it. I'm not a big action movie person so I was pleasantly surprised. This is the second time I've seen it too.

    Dead Alive

Still one of the goriest, craziest movies ever made, and likely a precursor to Shaun of the Dead.

    Hatchet 2

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite horror series'. After the first one gave us "Freddy vs. Jason," we're now treated to "Jason vs. Candyman" and the awesome "Jason vs. Leatherface" showdowns in part 2.

Filled with campy goodness and many of the best, most creative kills in the genre, this series is a slasher film fan's dream.

The Bangers Sisters (this past weekend) the cast was better than the actual movie itself.

They obviously had to change some things from the book, but the movie totally works. Just wish there was more battle room.

Gravity 3D- I felt like I was holding my breath and on the edge of my seat the entire movie. That was thrilling and nonstop action and just fabulous directing. Crazy
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

****in Bill Maher spoilered Gravity (the Clooney thing) out of nowhere because Neil DeGrasse Tyson was on his show on Friday. no warning at all, pissed me right off, I haven't seen it and was really looking forward to it.

Will Gravity still translate watching at home on a HDTV?
