Default Well, no more attempting to trade with Memphis....

Check out who they brought in to apparently help them do the Moneyball thing:

John Hollinger, a fixture of ESPN.com's coverage of the NBA for the past eight seasons and one of the leaders in basketball's rising statistical analysis movement in the past decade, is leaving his role as a columnist to join the front office of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Best known for hatching the formula behind every player's Player Efficiency Rating (PER) -- which attempts to quantify player performance through the use of an all-in-one rating -- Hollinger will begin work as a senior executive in the Grizzlies' basketball department next week.

"It's incredibly difficult to leave ESPN, but the chance to work for an NBA team and the Grizzlies' new ownership was an irresistible opportunity," Hollinger said Thursday.

Hollinger was recruited to the Grizzlies by new controlling owner Robert Pera and CEO/managing partner Jason Levien, who have made upgrading Memphis' analytics department one of their front-office priorities.

The Grizzlies on Thursday declined comment.

Hollinger, 41, founded the website "Alleyoop" in 1996 to launch his online career as a basketball sabermetrician and authored a series of books originally known as the "Pro Basketball Prospectus" and later titled "Pro Basketball Forecast."

He went on to work for The Oregonian newspaper's online site (OregonLive.com) and served as the NBA editor of Sports Illustrated's online site (SI.com) before joining ESPN.com in February 2005.

Too bad he won't be the one making the final signoff on any trades. Exploiting him for players that do more in a team game than just put up individual stats should be pretty easy.

At least we won't have to read his junk any more.

But how many NBA executives are now telling their assistant to write "HOLLINGER ALERT" at the top of every While You Were Out note regarding a missed call from the Memphis front office so that they'll know to skip it? And do we get any credit for that? Should somebody from PD quickly file a trademark on HOLLINGER ALERT?
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

He's not the GM or anything and his role doesn't even sound very big.

I enjoy watching the Grizzlies. They remind me of the Western Conference version of us.

What the heck does this thread title have to do with his job with Grizz. He isn't facilitating any trades.

He may not be facilitating them, but you know Memphis is going to be using his PER system to try and help them make personnel moves. Hence, the Moneyball reference.

I know a lot of you guys don't care for Hollinger's writings but I think that PER is a great measurement of a players net worth. Its definitely better than plus/minus rankings and I think it's more accurate than the EFF rating system. It doesn't tell the whole story about a player (even he admits that) but PER was a brilliant invention and John Hollinger deserves credit for coming up with it.

I also don't get why Pacers fans are so hard on him. At least he writes about the Pacers from time to time. During the down years, he and Chad Ford were the only 2 writers with ESPN that even bothered to comment on the Pacers from a basketball standpoint (brushes with the law don't count).

So, is the new Grizz owner trying to assemble a fantasy basketball team?

But do they really need Hollinger there to do that? Is the formula not well known?
Nothing in life worth having comes easy.

Comparing PER to sabremetrics is an insult to sabremetrics. There's no Moneyball in PER.

Ash... I've always looked at Hollinger as a Nate Silver wanna-be. He just doesn't have the wealth of statistical knowledge that Silver has.

You guys really think they brought him in for PER?

This is a pretty awesome, outside the box move by the Grizz.

Considering Nate Silver would have been 18 at the time that Hollinger started.......

Hollinger performs professional statistical analysis combined with observation for a reality check. He doesn't stop after he comes up with PER anymore than Einstein stopped at E=MC^2.

And the public stuff is the tip of the iceberg. Guys have video coordinated data sets where they can calculate assists to assists, or assists not including ball rotations for 3PMs, or shots blocked recovered by defensive team, and guys like Hollinger are the ones processing that.

PER is a toy playing with the most basic, raw stats. No decent stat geek stopped there, but with money on the line it's not like they want to distribute these more extravagant stats/analysis for free at ESPN or CBS Sports. Instead you go take a check from the Griz and share it with no one else.

Well, no more attempting to trade with Memphis...
Because our previous trade attempts with Memphis had gone so smoothly?

I was wondering when someone was going to pick up on that.

Hopefully Gerald Green's PER is sky high and Conley Jr.'s isn't.
