Default ROT IN HELL CREDIT THIEVES

I tried to buy gas on my VISA Thursday and was declined. I went to Target (also THursday) and was again declined. Friday I called to see why.

They had put a security hold on my card for some internet sales attempts that failed Weds. and Thurs.

    Gamestop $156

    3 Camera stores $752

    Skinit $49.00

    Two others for about $200

THey couldn't tell me what caused them to decline those but I have a hunch someone got the front of the card but not that 3 digit security code on the back of the card. Thank heavens I protested all and there are no pending charges I have to pay.

I dunno, could they trace back and find the IP for the user?

The IP? You mean like an Internet IP? No, that's just for your computer connecting to the Internet. It should be able to tell you which exact stores this guy was in, at least, though. And what day/time.

I doubt those were the only charges were they? I'm thinking that there would've been others that were odd (odd for your normal usage patterns) to the point your card got redflagged and THEN they started declining it.

I wasn't under the impression there'd be much of a trail if the security code was missing in a transaction. IOW, that would just be a sale that doesn't get past the 'entry' part with an online sale. I could be wrong but I'm thinking if you don't enter a security code when requested then the transaction isn't even getting transmitted to the credit card company. Instead the vendor software just loops back and informs you there's missing info and highlights the missing info.

The real question is how did someone get your card numbers?

This happened to me about 5 years ago. Someone got my card numbers and tried to buy things online. Mostly gambling sites, but the card got red flaged when they tried to charge over 200 dollars on it. It sucks, but just be glad it was caught and you don't owe for any of the crap that was charged on it.

I had something similar happen to me a few years back. I was lucky they messed up on the password and they didn't get any big cash but it sucked because I had to get new everything.

If the credit card provider hasn't done so already, I would recommend cancelling the card and getting a new one.

Card was cancelled by the issuer the first day I talked with them.

Last year somebody tried to use Jr's ATM card for purchases in Mexico (blocked by the issueing company because he made an Indiana purchase the same time) Within a week, five of his friends at IU had the same thing happen. I told him they should all compare where they had used the cards and if there was a common spot then they were on to tracking down the thief. Since none of them suffered any actual loss they weren't interested in even trying. Just dumb IMPO.

You may need to get you some credit card sleeves Geez. Folks don't have to see your credit card numbers visually to get your info. Many of your cards have rfid chips (yes they're made that small now) that can transmit your data and @ssholes standing nearby can pick up that info with secret scanners/readers.

Best example I can give you is I can enter any door on our campus with electronic locks just by pulling out my wallet (not opening the wallet) and wave it past the card reader and the door unlocks. My id has a chip and the id is no thicker or larger in size compared to any credit card I have.

I'm not an expert on this so your best bet is to look around on the net and be scared once you find the info that's out there.

In the past I have seen shielded wallets for sale on the NRA website that are supposed to protect against that very thing. Guess I'll pay more attention now.

Same thing happened to me last month. Only had my bank card with me and got declined at breakfast and at an atm. Had to leave my wife in the restaurant while I went to the bank. Seems someone tried to use my number in Houston. They stopped the charges before they went through. Had to get a new card.
