The Pelicans is a hell of lot better than the Thunder, Magic, basically every WNBA name, etc.

I had to Google this but... Dream? Sky? Sun? Fever? Liberty? Sparks? Mercury? Silver Stars? Storm? Shock? My God those are even worse than the league's product. The Lynx and the Mystics are the only teams in the league whose nickname isn't horrible.

But can they veto names that don't violate the no corporate rules?

Hopefully Charlotte can take the name Hornets back, and the colors.
If I remember right, the Bobcats was the name chosen because the original owner (Bob or Robert something or other) was an egotistical prick.

I thought that was always more of a rumor or jab at the owner more than an actual fact.

Pacers is the best name in the league. It is the most meaningful name to the game of basketball. A Pacer is a member of the franchise that is setting the pace of the league. A Pacer is a player that is setting the pace of the game. For over 35 years I have always used their name in context of their play.
Garbage players get 1st round picks, (WTF)! All of the NBA must hate the Pacers! LOL

Not trying to discriminate, but Pelicans should be a WNBA name...just sayin!

Cue the new intro video with an underwater view of a fish swimming...on the side of the fish is the opponent that night(obviously)....then out of nowhere a pelican comes crashing through the water and scoops up the fish and rests on a perch...they zoom in on the pelicans eye and some rock music starts...."On your feet Pelicans fans..."

I'm pretty sure it will be even more retarded in person than how I am picturing it.
I know "Sleeze" is spelled incorrectly. I spell it this way because it's based on a name.

Somewhere, I heard that it was true. I can't remember where or how reliable it was, but I'm not sure anyone but Bob Johnson knows for sure.

Re: Hornets changing name to New Orleans Pelicans

Hmm, interesting stuff. Here's what the official site has to say:

                          The Naming of the Pacers
When professional basketball came to Indianapolis in 1967, one of the key decisions would be what to call the new American Basketball Association franchise.

According to Indianapolis attorney, Richard D. Tinkham, the nickname “Pacers” was decided on through a collective decision of the original investors. Tinkham, one of those investors, recalled that the nickname was a combination of the state’s rich history with the harness racing pacers (investor Chuck Barnes was a horse racing enthusiast) and the pace car used for the running of the Indianapolis 500.

Tinkham said the “Pacers” decision was an easy one, but the real debate was whether the team should be called the Indiana Pacers or the Indianapolis Pacers. Since one of the original ideas for the team was to have it playing throughout the state with its base in Indianapolis, the official team name became the Indiana Pacers.

This is the worst name in all professional sports. I will laugh at them when they are announced at BLF.

It's not that bad. New Orleans Pelicans. It rolls off the tongue well. It's unusual and there's a local connection, not the typical 1-2 syllables, i like it much better than "Thunder" and such.

Given that the Pacers are essentially referring to race horses, as Gnome and I have discussed before, if they ever decide to re-brand the team and get away from the famous Pacer "P", the obvious choice would be a new logo incorporating a race horse in some fashion. It could be done well, or it could be lousy depending on what they come up with, but it's a viable alternative if they ever decide to really change our brand one day.
